In search of evidence for model-driven development claims: An experiment on quality, effort, productivity and satisfaction

Context: Model-Driven Development (MDD) is a paradigm that prescribes building conceptual models that abstractly represent the system and generating code from these models through transformation rules. The literature is rife with claims about the benefits of MDD, but they are hardly supported by evidences. Objective: This experimental investigation aims to verify some of the most cited benefits of MDD. Method: We run an experiment on a small set of classes using student subjects to compare the quality, effort, productivity and satisfaction of traditional development and MDD. The experiment participants built two web applications from scratch, one where the developers implement the code by hand and another using an industrial MDD tool that automatically generates the code from a conceptual model. Results: Outcomes show that there are no significant differences between both methods with regard to effort, productivity and satisfaction, although quality in MDD is more robust to small variations in problem complexity. We discuss possible explanations for these results. Conclusions: For small systems and less programming-experienced subjects, MDD does not always yield better results than a traditional method, even regarding effort and productivity. This contradicts some previous statements about MDD advantages. The benefits of developing a system with MDD appear to depend on certain characteristics of the development context. The world of software for measurement and test applications is analyzed by considering two main distinct groups of solutions related to the scenario on the market and to the state of the art in research. For the first group, after defining suitable decision criteria for analyzing the related products, the most innovative and promising solutions of manufacturers leaders are reviewed. In the second group, software tools and applications for instrumentation and measurement research are examined, by looking for main trends in the related scenario and a synthesis of the most promising advancements. The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) was first formulated in 1930 and is one of the most studied problems in optimization. If the optimal solution to the TSP can be found in polynomial time, it would then follow that every NP-hard problem could be solved in polynomial time, proving P=NP. It will be shown that our algorithm finds P~NP with scale. Using a δ -ε proof, it is straightforward to show that as the number of cities goes to infinity, P goes to NP (i.e., ε >0 ). This was demonstrated using a quadratic number of parallel processors because that speedup, by definition, is polynomial. A fastest parallel algorithm is defined. Six distinct 3-D charts of empirical results are supplied. For example, using an arbitrary run of 5,000 cities, we obtained a tour within 0.00001063 percent of the optimal using 4,166,667 virtual processors (Intel Xenon E5-1603 @ 2.8 GHz). To save the calculated extra 209 miles would take a quantum computer, the fastest possible computer, over (5,000!/(2**4,978 * 22!)) * 267,782 centuries. Clearly, the automated acquisition of heuristics and the associated P~NP solutions are an important problem warranting attention.

The main goal of this paper is to describe how we consider that splicing systems (a family of abstract bio-inspired computing devices) can be automatically programmed (designed) in the future. One of the necessary steps is to formally describe the computer being programmed (splicing systems). Some of the authors of this paper have previously solved this problem. Another necessary step is to develop a simulator for H systems. We propose applying Christiansen Grammar Evolution (an evolutionary automatic programming algorithm developed by the authors) to complete the process. This technique includes a fitness function that the simulator requires. This paper is devoted to describe jHSys, a Java simulator for splicing (H) systems.

Before implementation into hardware signal processing algorithms are tested in simulation mode. LabVIEW provides highly convenient environment for simulation development and also tools for generation of simulation environment that can include simulation itself and collection of simulation data. Despite the fact these tools use LabVIEW for code generation, it is not easy to understand the principles of code generation and effectively develop simulation generators. This paper presents toolbox for improved LabVIEW code generation. The developed toolbox is based on standard LabVIEW code generation functions maximally simplifying the application and minimizing the necessary amount of tools for code generation. This paper consists of theoretical part about LabVIEW code generation methods, practical part about principles of LabVIEW code generation using scripting and a graphical presentation of improved LabVIEW code generation advantages. The presented graphical results show that the improved LabVIEW code generation is simpler (thus better) and more understandable for practical realization and the code generator is clearer and more comprehensible than the original one.

Based on the problems of information processing and conversion in RP technology at the present time, CAD model expressed in the boundary representation (B-Rep) was analyzed, therefore part contour was describe as polyline (multi-segment line) in the paper. ObjectARX application program is developed using the development tools of ObjectARX. The automatic program of generating standard CLI file is realized in SLS that achieving the integration of CAD, CAPP and RP a CAD / CAM / RP partly.

automatic programming assessment has recently become an important method in assisting lecturers and instructors of programming courses to automatically mark and grade students' programming exercises as well as to provide useful feedbacks on students' programming solutions. As part of the method, test data generation process plays as an integral part to perform a dynamic testing on students' programs. To date, various automated methods for test data generation particularly in software testing field are available. Unfortunately, they are seldom used in the context of automatic programming assessment research area. Nevertheless, there have been limited studies taking a stab to integrate both of them due to more useful features and to include a better quality program testing coverage. Thus, this paper provides a review on approaches that have been implemented in various studies with regard to automatic programming assessment, test data generation and integration of both of them. This review is aimed at gathering different techniques that have been employed to forward an interested reader the starting points for finding further information regarding its trends. In addition, the result of the review reveals the main gap that exists within the context of the considered areas which contributes to our main research topic of interest.

Cartesian Genetic programming (CGP) is a well-known form of Genetic programming developed by Julian Miller in 1999-2000. In its classic form, it uses a very simple integer address-based genetic representation of a program in the form of a directed graph. Graphs are very useful program representations and can be applied to many domains (e.g. electronic circuits, neural networks). It can handle cyclic or acyclic graphs. In a number of studies, CGP has been shown to be comparatively efficient to other GP techniques. It is also very simple to program. The classical form of CGP has undergone a number of developments which have made it more useful, efficient and flexible in various ways. These include self-modifying CGP (SMCGP), cyclic connections (recurrent-CGP), encoding artificial neural networks and automatically defined functions (modular CGP).SMCGP uses functions that cause the evolved programs to change themselves as a function of time. This makes it possible to find general solutions to classes of problems and mathematical algorithms (e.g. arbitrary parity, n-bit binary addition, sequences that provably compute pi and e to arbitrary precision, and so on).Recurrent-CGP allows evolution to create programs which contain cyclic, as well as acyclic, connections. This enables application to tasks which require internal states or memory. It also allows CGP to create recursive *** encoded artificial neural networks represent a powerful training method for neural networks. This is because CGP is able to simultaneously evolve the networks connections weights, topology and neuron transfer functions.
