We present a voltage comparator that uses nonvolatile floating gate charge storage for either offset nulling or automatic programming of a desired offset. We demonstrate the ability to reduce the variance of the initial offset and to accurately program a desired offset. We exploit the negative feedback functionality of pFET hot-electron injection to achieve fully automatic offset cancellation. The design has been fabricated in a commercially available 0.35 /spl mu/m process. Experimental results confirm the ability to reduce the variance of the initial offset by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude and to accurately define a desired offset with maximum observed deviation of 728 /spl mu/V and typical deviation of 109 /spl mu/V. We achieve adaptation with settling time of 50 ms, which is inversely proportional to the exponential of the injection voltage. We achieve controlled injection to accurately program the input offset to voltages uniformly distributed from -1 V to 1 V. The comparator exhibits a 5 ns propagation delay.

Developing software for controlling robotic systems is costly due to the complexity inherent in these systems. There is a need for tools that permit a reduction in the programming efforts, aiming at the generation of modular and robust applications, and promoting software reuse. The techniques which are of common use today in other areas are not adequate to deal with the complexity associated with these systems. In this work, we present CoolBOT, a component oriented framework for programming robotic systems, based on the port automata model that fosters controllability and observability of software components. A simple demonstrator illustrates the benefits of using the proposed approach in the development of a robotic application.

Remote robotics applications, such as space exploration or operation in hazardous environments, would greatly benefit from automated recovery algorithms for unanticipated failure or damage. In this paper a two-stage evolutionary algorithm is introduced-which we call the estimation-exploration algorithm-that forwards this aim by first evolving a damage hypothesis after failure and then re-evolving a compensatory neural controller to restore functionality. The algorithm presupposes that a robot simulator is running continuously onboard the physical robot. In this paper, the 'physical' robot is also simulated, but in future work the algorithm will be applied to a real, physical robot. Although evolutionary algorithms require a large number of evaluations to produce a useful solution, the results reported here indicate that almost complete functionality can be restored after only three evaluations on the 'physical' robot, as opposed to over 3000 evaluations if the compensatory controller is evolved all on the 'physical' robot. Our algorithm also has the benefit of producing a diagnostic model of the failure.

In parallelizing compilers on distributed memory systems, distributions of irregular sized array blocks are provided for load balancing and irregular problems. The irregular redistribution is different from the regular block-cyclic redistribution. This paper is devoted to developing algorithms for irregular redistribution that attempt to obtain near optimal scheduling while satisfying the minimal communication costs condition and the minimal step condition. Efficient algorithms are developed and their experimental results are compared. One improved list algorithm provides more chance for conflict messages in its relocation phase. It allocates conflict messages through methods used in a divide-and-conquer algorithm and a relocation algorithm proposed previously. The method of selecting the smallest relocation cost guarantees that the improved list algorithm is more efficient than others in average.

We present a procedure for the approximate verification of a class of adaptive control systems. In the systems considered, the continuum state evolves according to a differential equation that is jointly polynomial in states and exogenous inputs. Our computational procedure for approximate verification consists of outer approximating reach sets and checking behavioral inclusion. The main tool for computing outer approximations is a result due to Handelman on the representation of polynomials that are positive in a polytope. It is a special case of Schmudgen's theorem, which is a central result in sum of squares (SOS) programming. Using the result, a linear program for outer approximation is derived. An extension to adaptive systems with state-dependent switching is described. Some difficulties with our approach are also discussed.

A class of beliefs-desires-intentions (BDI) agent architecture is presented for control systems with a high degree of autonomy. The architecture contains agents for modelling, controller optimization, implementation and to monitor performance. The global convergence of performance of the agent system is proven under three mild assumptions. Relevant features of the agent structure are competing modellers and controllers. The benefit is an enhanced ability to learn new plant dynamics of varying complexity and controller adaptation. The new family of control agent architectures is called cautiously optimistic, a name to reflect the most important property of the new architecture: modelling results are applied with caution for control but current models are accepted until measurements do not contradict them with a margin. A cautiously optimistic control agent (COCA) is proven to have converging performance to a nearly optimal performance for stationary dynamics of a real plant under fairly general assumptions.

In designing fuzzy models to short-term load forecasting (STLF), we encounter a major difficulty in the identification of optimized fuzzy rule bases, which are traditionally obtained by trial and error. An approach to automatic design of optimal fuzzy rule bases using AEP (accelerated evolutionary programming) is proposed to construct the fuzzy models for short-term load forecasting. According to this approach, identification of the premise part and the consequence part is simultaneously accomplished, and the models complexity is also reduced compared to other fuzzy models. This method was tested on the Zhejiang Power Company's load data and the performances of the proposed method are compared to those of artificial neural network (ANN) models. The comparisons indicate the better performance of the proposed method.

In the context of heterogeneous networks, like clusters of workstations, the design of programming and execution environments aims both to easily express parallelism and distribution of applications, at conception level, and to adapt automatically their execution to fluctuations that may appear in the evolution of applications or in resources availabilities. We present the ADAJ environment (adaptive distributed applications in Java), targeted towards Java applications, which addresses these aims, through conceptual tools offered by the programming environment and through a dynamic load balancing mechanism, integrated at the middleware level. At a conception level, the developer has the possibility of easily activating processing in a MIMD programming model, using library calls. At the execution level, the efficiency of execution in ADAJ exploits an observation mechanism, which allows to acquire information on processing behaviour in order to dynamically redistribute load, by object migrations.

The activity cycle diagrams are a simple notation to model discrete-event simulation systems. Its informality makes it very useful when communicating the model to non-specialists; however, it also makes the automatic code generation very difficult. Some extensions have been proposed to augment the representation power of ACD and some formalization has been suggested to enable automatic translation to program. Java is becoming a widespread object oriented programming language. We present an automatic translation from an extended ACD to a Java program. The translator has been successfully used in a groupware for simulation development environment named GroupSim.

We describe a characterization the three classical world views of event scheduling, activity scanning, and process interaction and discuss transformations among them. We believe that one advantage of each is to allow more concise model descriptions by allowing a model specifier to take advantage of contextual information. Automated transformation among world views is difficult due to a modeler's use of contextual information. We illustrate this by transforming and then simplifying a model representation creating a version, similar to what a programmer or modeler might generate.
