In a large-scale control system, the health monitoring subsystem could produce hundreds to thousands of system inputs. Using Matlab's Stateflow to implement supervisory logic that could interpret sensor or actuator failures allows for a hybrid control system to be developed and simulated. The manual creation of a Stateflow chart for use in a Simulink simulation of a large-scale guidance and control system is a tedious and time-consuming process. The Stateflow Autocoder is a Matlab based software tool for the automatic generation of a Stateflow chart from information contained in a database. Managing the parameters and elements of a simulation via a database presents an opportunity to efficiently create or modify a simulation model by only changing information that is contained within the database. This paper describes the auto-generation of a Stateflow chart that is required to manage a simulation from a database.

"Teaching by demonstration" is a method of generating a robot program that makes a robot do the same task as the task that a human operator demonstrates. We have developed a "teaching by demonstration in VR" system that automatically generates a robot program to work in the real world after a task is demonstrated by an operator in the virtual world. This system generates a program that detects each contact state extracted from demonstration in VR and produces it by skillful motion primitives. In this paper, based on our observation that a human has the skill wherein contact state transitions are made nondeterministically, we propose a method of dealing with one of the important nondeterministic motions, "nondeterministic search type motion." Experimental results show the feasibility of the method.

Simulation of automatically-generated test programs is the primary means for verifying complex hardware designs and random test program generators therefore play a major role in the verification process of micro-processors. The input for a test program generator is typically an abstract specification-a template-of the tests to be generated. Due to randomness, generators often encounter situations that were not anticipated when the test specification was written. We introduce the concept of adaptive test program generation, which is designed to handle these unforeseen situations. We propose a technique that defines unexpected events together with their alternative program specifications. When an event is detected, its corresponding alternative specification is injected into the test program.

This paper presents a new logic-based method of detecting incidents on signalized streets. The concept of the method is based on the fact that incidents, when reducing capacity of intersections, change the sequence of congested sections (congestion patterns) along an arterial street. Rules are derived that use discrepancies between expected and actual congestion patterns to detect the presence of incidents and to identify their location. The feasibility of the method was checked with computer simulation. The following features of the proposed method distinguish it from the existing methods: (1) any data that carries congestion information can be used; (2) all the rules applied to infer incident information are rigorously derived from the fundamental principles of traffic operations and not from subjective human knowledge; (3) the method estimates the range of possible values of capacities affected by the incident; and (4) the method is able to detect incident clearance. This paper presents a novel idea of detecting incidents rather than a fully verified method.

VPP (Visual programming Platform) is an integrated software development environment for Virtual Instrument (VI). It is based on a dynamic Extended Dataflow Language (EDFL) and allows users to graphically create block diagrams of their applications and interactively control inputs, outputs, and system variables. VPP builds on top of some experiences of HP-VEE/LabVIEW, is easier to user, more compatible and supported for quite some time. The system structure and semantics of EDFL are presented. With a precise specification of a language's semantics and a system model, it is in many cases only a small step towards a new implementation.

We report on recent progress in the establishment of efficient and user-friendly on-line techniques for running real laboratory experiments over the Internet. For this purpose, we have recently developed an automated system, Lab-on-Web, based on modern Web and instrument control technology, including Component Object Model with extensions (COM+), Active Server Pages (ASP), Internet Server Application programming Interface (ISAPI), and LabVIEW 6i. Advanced functionalities of modem Web browsers are utilized, allowing the system to communicate in terms of eXtensible Markup Language (XML), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), etc. The objective is to allow communication with minimum overhead, to provide a functional client interface, to establish a variety of experiments, and to allow flexibility in configuring experiments from the client side. The system has been used in senior student laboratories for remote characterization of electronic devices and circuits.

Real-life negotiations typically involve multiple parties with (i) different preferences for the different issues and (ii) bargaining strategies which change over time. Such a dynamic environment (with imperfect information) is addressed in this paper with a multi-population evolutionary algorithm (EA). Each population represents an evolving collection of bargaining strategies in our setup. The bargaining strategies are represented by a special kind of finite automata, which require only two transitions per state. We show that such automata (with a limited complexity) are a suitable choice in a computational setting. We furthermore describe an EA which generates highly-efficient bargaining automata in the course of time. A series of computational experiments shows that co-evolving automata are able to discriminate successfully between different opponents, although they receive no explicit information about the identity or preferences of their opponents. These results are important for the further development of evolving automata for real-life (agent system) applications.

Presents a control and learning architecture for humanoid robots designed for acquiring movement skills in the context of imitation learning. Multiple levels of movement abstraction occur across the hierarchical structure of the architecture, finally leading to the representation of movement sequences within a probabilistic framework. As its substrate, the framework uses the notion of visuo-motor primitives, modules capable of recognizing as well as executing similar movements. This notion is heavily motivated by the neuroscience evidence for motor primitives and mirror neurons. Experimental results from an implementation of the architecture are presented involving learning and representation of demonstrated movement sequences from synthetic as well as real human movement data.

We consider a single-user block-fading multiple antenna link with M transmit and N receive antennas described by a propagation matrix that is constant during coherence intervals of length T symbols, after which it jumps to a new independent value for T more symbols, and so on. We assume throughout the paper that the random propagation matrix is unknown to both the transmitter and the receiver. Computing the capacity of the above channel is still an open problem. Hassibi and Marzetta (see IEEE Trans. Info. Theory) took an important step towards this by obtaining in close-form the probability density of the received signal when transmitting isotropically-random unitary matrices. The technique used for doing this which involves taking expectations with respect to the isotropically random unitary matrix - has other interesting ramifications. In this paper we make use of this technique to obtain a variety of new bounds on the random coding exponent, which provide improved estimates, compared with the simple union bound, of the autocoding performance of codebooks of isotropically random unitary signals.

Today's industrial automation of spray painting is limited to high part volumes and robot trajectories that are programmed by off-line programming and manual teach-in. This paper presents an approach that uses range image data to obtain the geometry of an unknown part and to automatically generate the robot spray painting trajectories. Laser strip range sensors are installed in front of the paint booth to acquire a range image of the part. Utilizing process knowledge (a geometric library containing constraints specific for the painting application) geometric primitives are detected in the range data. From the geometric primitives a normal vector field is generated that enables to extract main faces. The main faces are located in a 3D space and the process knowledge related to each geometric primitive is utilized to obtain the trajectory for the paint gun. Results of painting a car mirror and steering column are given.
