New, exact closed-form expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the instantaneous end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems with "full" selection diversity. The direct path, from the source to the destination, as well as multiple dual-hop paths, through intermediate relays, are considered in the selection set. The selection process follows a maximum SNR policy, such that the path of the maximum end-to-end SNR is used as the communication link, whether this path is the direct path or one of the dual-hop paths. The derived expressions are used to obtain the first exact results for the average error probability and the outage probability of such AF relaying systems. The results are verified through simulations for identically distributed as well as non-identically distributed Nakagami-m fading links. The system performance is compared to that of conventional wireless systems which use only the direct link between the source and the destination for communication. The system performance is compared also to that of an opportunistic dual-hop AF system with maximum end-to-end SNR relay selection that excludes the direct path from the selection set. Results show that the full selection system performance is superior to those in the comparison. For example, in the case of Nakagami-m fading links with m = 4 and N = 2 candidate intermediate relays, an average error probability of 2 × 10~(-4) in the case of AF relaying with full selection, occurs at 4.06 dB less than it occurs in the case of only direct transmission and at 0.95 dB less than it occurs in the case of maximum end-to-end SNR relay selection that excludes the direct path from selection. Results show also that the system provides diversity gain, proportional to the selection set size, N+1.

In this paper, we propose a compensation method for the joint effect of high-power amplifier (HPA) nonlinearity, in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance and crosstalk in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) systems. The performance of the MIMO OSTBC equipped with the proposed compensation mechanism is evaluated in terms of average symbol error probability and system capacity, in Rayleigh fading channels. Numerical results are provided and show the effects on performance of several system parameters, namely, the HPA parameters, image-leakage ratio, crosstalk, numbers of antennas, and phase-shift keying modulation order.

In this paper, we investigate the joint effects of high-power amplifier (HPA) nonlinearity, in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance and crosstalk, on the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmit beamforming (TB) systems, and propose a compensation method for the three impairments together. The performance of the MIMO TB system equipped with the proposed compensation scheme is evaluated in terms of average symbol error probability and capacity when transmissions are performed over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. Numerical results are provided and show the effects on performance of several system parameters, namely, the HPA parameters, image-leakage ratio, crosstalk, numbers of antennas, length of pilot symbols and phase-shift keying modulation order.

Performance evaluation of selection diversity receivers over arbitrarily correlated generalised Gamma fading channels

The performance of multibranch selection diversity (SD) receivers over L arbitrarily correlated generalised Gamma (GG) fading channels is analysed and evaluated. Following a statistical approach previously proposed for the multivariate Nakagami-m distribution, a closed-form upper bound for the joint GG probability density function (PDF) and an infinite series upper bound for the joint GG cumulative distribution function (CDF) are obtained. For the special case of the trivariate GG distribution (L 3), exact expressions in the form of infinite series for the PDF and CDF are presented. The derived bounds are used to obtain tight upper bounds for the distribution of the SD output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Furthermore, based on the derived analysis, novel analytical expressions that accurately approximate the distribution of the SD output SNR are presented. The bounds and approximations are used to study important performance criteria of SD receivers such as outage and average symbol error probability. The accuracy of the derived expressions has been verified, on the one hand, analytically for triple-branch (L = 3) and, on the other hand, by means of computer simulations for multibranch (L > 3) SD receivers.

The performance of dual-hop Decode-and-Forward relaying with relay selection (RS) and repetitive transmission is studied over Nakagami-m fading channels. Closed-form expressions for the moment generating function of RS-based transmission with maximal-ratio diversity at the destination and repetitive transmission with selection diversity (SD) are derived. We obtain the outage probability (OP) and the average symbol error probability (ASEP) for the following relaying schemes: repetitive transmission, pure RS-based transmission and a rate-selective scheme that utilizes the selected relay node only if it provides higher achievable rate than direct transmission. Performance results show that RS-based schemes always outperform the repetitive ones. Furthermore it is shown that in terms of ASEP pure RS is always beneficial, although in terms of OP the single-hop transmission outperforms dual-hop relaying if the source to destination channel is sufficiently strong.

We analyze the performance of optimum combining in a general cochannel interference environment with thermal noise. Specifically, we consider multiple unequal-power interferers, each is spatially correlated across receiving antennas. We develop a new mathematical methodology to analyze the average symbol error probability (SEP) of optimum combining diversity systems in Rayleigh fading. The analysis resorts to the so-called Berezin's supermathematics that treats both commuting and Grassmann anticommuting variables on an equal footing. This superanalysis framework enables us to derive the exact SEP expression for an arbitrary number of interferers with spatial correlation and possibly different power levels. Our results therefore encompass all the previous analytical results, based on the theory of multivariate statistics relating to complex Wishart matrices, for equal-power and/or spatially-uncorrelated interferers. Connecting the powerful supermathematical framework to the analysis of wireless diversity systems with optimum combining, we quantify the interference effects in terms of the degree of power unbalance and the amount of spatial correlation.

This paper provides exact-form expressions for the average symbol error probability (ASEP) of various digital modulation schemes with maximal ratio combining (MRC) diversity over L independent, not necessarily identically distributed (n.i.d.) eta-mu fading channels. The derived expressions are given in terms of the Lauricella and Appell hypergeometric functions and include several others available in the literature such as those for Nakagami-m and Hoyt. General asymptotic ASEP expressions are also derived for all the considered modulation schemes which provide useful insights regarding the factors affecting the performance of the considered system.

Opportunistic relaying is an efficient way of acheiving diversity in wireless cooperative communication systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a proactive opportunistic non-regenerative relaying protocol, considering both maximum ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC) schemes at the destination. We derive a closed-form expression for the cummulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the presence of Nakagami-m fading and a SC receiver. Utilizing this statistical result, we then derive a new closed-form expression for average symbol error probability (ASEP), valid for many generic modulations, assuming identical integer fading parameters. Furthermore, we also derive a new closed-form expression for the moment generating function (MGF) of the end-to-end SNR considering Nakagami-m fading environment and MRC at the destination. Moreover, using the MGF-based approach, we derive and analyze new closed-form expressions for ASEP when MRC is employed at the destination.

Performance bounds of multihop wireless communications with blind relays over generalized fading channels

In this letter, efficient performance bounds for multihop wireless communications systems with non-regenerative blind relays over non-identical Nakagami-n (Rice), Nakagamiin and Nakagami-q (Hoyt) generalized fading channels, are presented. More specifically, the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is formulated and upper bounded by using the wellknown inequality between harmonic and geometric mean of positive random variables. This bound is used to study important system's performance metrics: i) The moments of the end-to-end SNR which are obtained in closed-forms, and ii) The outage probability and the average error probability for coherent and non-coherent modulations, which are accurately approximated using the moments-based approach. Furthermore, new analytical formulae are derived for the gain of previously proposed semi-blind relays in generalized fading environments. These kind of relays are used in numerical examples and computer simulations to verify the accuracy and to show the tightness of the proposed bounds.

Exact symbol error probability of a cooperative network in a Rayleigh-Fading environment

In a distributed spatial diversity wireless system, not all antennas are located at one station as in classical transmit diversity systems, but are dispersed at different, possibly mobile, stations in the network. Transmit diversity is created when the selected stations assist a sender by relaying its information signal to the destination. In this letter, we present an exact average symbol error rate analysis for the distributed spatial diversity wireless system with K amplifying relays in a Rayleigh-fading environment. The average symbol error rate formula allows us to clearly illustrate the advantage that the distributed diversity system has in overcoming the severe penalty in signal-to-noise ratio caused by Rayleigh fading. Using simple bounds on the probability of error, we show that the cooperative network presented in this letter achieves full diversity order.
