In this paper, we study the average bit error probability (ABEP) of Receive-Spatial Modulation (R-SM) in Rayleigh channels. R-SM is a multi-antenna wireless scheme that extends the concept of Spatial Modulation (SM) at the receiver side by using linear precoding. An accurate statistical framework is used for the characterization of the received signal. Using this framework, we provide novel and analytical bounds that characterize the ABEP of R-SM. Monte Carlo simulation results are used for the verification of the derived bounds. We compare R-SM against the corresponding standard Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) scheme and show its performance. We conclude that R-SM is able to offer the same or better BER performance as traditional MIMO only when the spectral efficiency is low and the number of transmit and receive antennas is low.

Effect of Microdiversity and Macrodiversity on average bit error probability in Gamma-Shadowed Rician Fading Channels

In this letter we analyze the error performance of a mobile communication system with microdiversity and macrodiversity reception in gamma-shadowed Rician fading channels for a binary differential phase-shift keying modulation scheme. Analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) and moment-generating function (MGF) are derived. The average bit error probability can be calculated by averaging the conditional bit error probability over the PDF or using the MGF-based approach. Numerical results are graphically presented to show the effects of macrodiversity, correlation, number of diversity branches, and severity of both fading and shadowing.

In this article, the performance of a wireless communication system with an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) panel installed between the transmitter and receiver is studied. The channel is considered to be the Hoyt faded and additive white Gaussian noise. Closed-form expressions for average bit error probability (ABEP) for both coherent Gray-coded rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation and non-coherent modulation schemes are presented. We apply the moment-generating function-based method for the derivation. In addition, asymptotic ABEP expressions are also obtained. Using asymptotic ABEP expressions, we obtained diversity order which is a function of the number of IRS elements. The effect of the number of IRS elements and fading parameters on the ABEP is studied. The ABEP performance improves with an increase in the number of reflecting elements but degrades with an increase in the fading severity. The accuracy of each analytical ABEP expression is verified by the simulation of the system considered herewith.

A New Formula for the average bit error probability of Dual-Hop Amplify-and-Forward Relaying Systems over Generalized Shadowed Fading Channels

In this letter we propose a unified analytical expression for the average bit error probability of dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying systems operating in the presence of both fast fading and shadowing. In order to provide a realistic end-toend performance of the considered system we assume that both hops are subject to independent but not necessarily identically distributed Extended Generalized-K fading. Our newly derived formula is obtained in terms of the bivariate H-Fox function. A computationally efficient algorithm to evaluate the average bit error probability is also proposed. The accuracy of the proposed method is substantiated by various numerically evaluated and computer simulation results.

In this paper, we propose a fluid antenna (FA) enabled joint transmit and receive index modulation (FA-JTR-IM) transmission mechanism for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. By integrating the methodologies of FA and IM, the proposed scheme achieves enhanced spectral efficiency (SE) while requiring only a single radio frequency (RF) chain at both the transmitter and receiver. The proposed scheme offers a low hardware cost and power consumption transmission mechanism for the RIS-aided mmWave communication systems. Specifically, the encoding of information bits encompasses not only the modulated symbol but also the indices of transmit FA positions and receive antennas. To achieve a reliability-complexity trade-off, two types of detectors are introduced for the proposed FA-JTR-IM scheme, including the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detector and two-step sequential (TSS) detector. Based on the ML detector, we derive the expression for the conditional pair-wise error probability of the proposed FA-JTR-IM scheme. Additionally, we provide the closed-form expressions for the unconditional PEP under the finite-path and infinite-path channel conditions, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed FA-JTR-IM scheme in terms of error performance over its conventional benchmark schemes under the same SE condition.

Performance Analysis for Optimal Pilot Spacing in MIMO-OFDM Systems

This paper investigates pilot symbol-assisted channel estimation in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. Especially, under multipath fading channels, we perform the analysis for optimal pilot spacing that maximizes the effective data rate which represents the number of correctly detected data per unit time. To do this, we first find the statistical properties of the estimated effective channel including interpolation error. After that, utilizing the statistical properties of the estimated effective channel, the average bit error probability and the effective data rate according to the pilot spacing are derived. Furthermore, based on the derived results, we obtain the average optimal pilot spacing to maximize the effective data rate of the systems. In simulation results, we verify analysis for the average bit error probability and effective data rate by comparing analytical and simulation results according to the frequency selectivity of the channel models. The existence of optimal pilot spacing which compromises the average bit error probability and data rate is also confirmed by the analytical results of the effective data rate. Finally, we discuss the relationship between the frequency selectivity of the channels and optimal pilot spacing, and the effectiveness of utilizing average optimal pilot spacing in practical channel models. Simulation results show that, regardless of the frequency selectivity of the channels, the average optimal spacing can achieve at least 93% of maximum effective data rate performance except for the case of the bottom 5%.

Performance Analysis of Cooperative Quadrature Spatial Modulation System With Hybrid Decode-Amplify-Forward Relaying Protocol

This paper introduces the cooperative quadrature spatial modulation (CQSM) system with hybrid decode-amplify-forward (HDAF) relaying protocol. Compered with the traditional CQSM system which only uses amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol and decode-and-forward (DF) protocol, the system has enhanced the spectral efficiency and the performance of the average bit error probability (ABEP). In the proposed CQSM system, the information bit selects the relay to forward the information, while the relay index carries the information. At the relay, the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol and the adaptive decode-and-forward (ADF) protocol are combined. The relay uses the AF protocol instead of remaining silent in the ADF protocol when the relay decodes signal incorrectly. Meanwhile, the closed-form expression of the ABEP for the proposed scheme is derived in detail. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulation results verify the correctness of the theoretical ABEP derivation and the superiority of the proposed CQSM system with HDAF protocol over other existing schemes in terms of ABEP.

We propose to use the probability of instantaneous bit error outage (IBEO) as a new performance measure in the design of an actual feedback power control system. It is defined as the probability that the instantaneous bit error probability (IBEP) exceeds an IBEP threshold. We propose the IBEO-based power control law where the transmitted power is adjusted according to the variations of the channel such that the IBEO probability is kept within some quality of service (QoS)-specified threshold. It ensures that in the long term, no more than a certain fraction of received bits would have IBEP exceeding some IBEP threshold. Therefore, the instantaneous QoS is guaranteed. Based on a practical system model with channel estimation and prediction, we develop the traditional average bit error probability (ABEP)-based power control law and the new IBEO-based power control law. For both laws, we derive explicit ABEP and IBEO probability results. The IBEO-based law shows a remarkable gain over the ABEP-based law in terms of IBEO probability, and sacrifices only a little in the ABEP performance.
