This paper is concerned with the privacy-preserving average consensus problem for discrete-time multi-agent systems. The main goal of this paper is to develop a privacy-preserving algorithm that ensures all agents in the network to reach exact average consensus while keeping the initial state of each agent private. To achieve this, a novel two-phase privacy-preserving algorithm is proposed. In the first phase, each agent generates a group of independent random signals and creates a mask signal via local data exchange. In the second phase, all agents execute a standard consensus algorithm. Rigorous analysis shows that each agent can converge to exact average consensus while protecting sensitive information of individuals against internal honest-but-curious nodes and external eavesdroppers. Moreover, the developed algorithm is applied to the distributed load sharing of microgrids. Finally, a simulation example is provided to verify the theoretical results. (c) 2024 Elsevier Ltd. The fault tolerance is an important design issue of many real-life applications based on the wireless sensor networks. However, the implementation of protective mechanisms results in increased overall energy consumption, making its usage not optimal. This paper focuses on the fault tolerance of the average consensus algorithm with the generalized Metropolis-Hastings weight design with a modified mixing parameter and without any protection. The robustness of the algorithm is examined using an MSE-metric for four various initial configurations and the obtained results are compared with concurrent weight designs for various failure probabilities.

Mobile wireless sensor networks find application in various areas due to their specific character. However, their operation is affected by many negatives factors and therefore modern applications are equipped with complementary data aggregation mechanisms to supress negatives effects. In this paper, our attention is focused on five frequently applied weight models of the average consensus algorithm for distributed averaging over mobile wireless sensor networks modelled as stationary Markovian evolving graphs with a different size and a varying probabiltiy of edge formation. We use the mean square error over the iterations as a metric to evaluate the performance of the analyzed weight models and identify the weight model with the highest performance.

This paper proposes a robust data-driven distributed fault detection (FD) method for interconnected systems with stochastic noises, addressing the challenges posed by stochastic noises and the limitations of centralized designs on real industrial systems. The proposed method utilizes the process data from a sensor network to generate robust residual signals for FD. The method performs distributed calculations of residual signals and test statistics at each sensor node using the subspace identification technique and the average consensus algorithm. To ensure satisfactory detection performance and robustness against uncertainties caused by stochastic noises, the paper integrates the performance index and the Mahalanobis distance into the FD framework. Unlike existing FD methods that rely on the Mahalanobis distance, this study also explores improving detection performance through the consensus algorithm and performance index. It is worth noting that this method not only mitigates the negative effects of stochastic noises in FD, but also eliminates global communication costs and complex information interactions. The developed method is validated through an experimental study on a real traction drive system to assess its feasibility and effectiveness.

The average consensus algorithm is a frequently applied iterative scheme to efficiently estimate various aggregate functions in many modern multi-agent systems. This paper addresses the average consensus with the Maximum-degree weights in bipartite regular graphs, where this algorithm does not converge as the third convergence condition is broken in these graphs. We apply a distributed mechanism (determined by five conditions) for detecting whether or not the algorithm is executed in this critical graph topology and analyze how to reconfigure it the most efficiently. The latest research suggests that its high performance is likely not to be achieved with the same values of the mixing parameter as in non-bipartite non-regular topologies. Hence, our goal is to identify the reconfiguration of the weight matrix ensuring the optimal performance of the algorithm under various conditions. Its performance is examined in randomly generated bipartite regular graphs with various connectivity and under three scenarios differing from each other in the rounding accuracy. Also, the asymptotic convergence factor of the weight matrices after reconfiguration is examined in the experimental section. Besides, the performance of a reconfigured average consensus with the Maximum-degree weights in bipartite regular graphs is compared to the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, which also diverges in these topologies with its optimal initial configuration. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Dynamic optimal active power dispatch with energy storage units and power flow limits is an important problem in smart grids. This problem is usually described as a convex optimization model. In our model, not only the conventional equality and inequality constraints, energy storage units' constraints and power flow constraints are considered, but also the energy storage units' operational costs and the power price of the main grid are considered in the total costs. To solve this problem, a fully distributed algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), the projected gradient method and the average consensus is proposed. The proposed algorithm can obtain the optimal output power settings of the energy storage units, distributed generators and the main grid for different demand loads with different initial states. In the proposed algorithm, firstly, the dispatch problem is decomposed into multiple subproblems on the basis of the alternating direction method of multipliers;then the subproblems can be solved according to the projected gradient method and the average consensus algorithm. In order to apply the projected gradient method, every bus is equipped with a bus agent which is responsible for information communication and the output power optimization calculation. Simulation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The usage of mechanisms for data aggregation becomes an important part of many real-life applications due to a reduction of negatives factors. In this paper, we examine the applicability of average consensus with a varying mixing parameter for distributed summing in wireless sensor networks. A stopping criterion proposed for these networks is assumed to be implemented in order to bound the algorithm execution. The parameters of the implemented stopping criterion and the mixing parameter of average consensus are varied in order to find their most suitable initial configuration in terms of the estimation precision and the convergence rate over 60 random geometric graphs with either a dense or a sparse connectivity.

Penetration of Intermittent Renewable Energy Sources (IRES) into power systems disturbs supply-demand balancing in short time period within 20 minutes and deteriorates frequency stability since IRES output depends on a weather condition. This paper proposes a novel decentralized Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system that contributes to improve a performance of Load Frequency Control (LFC). In order to avoid a biased use of specified Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries, the outputs of EV batteries are controlled so that State Of Charge (SOC) of all EVs are synchronized. The design of the decentralized control is based on average consensus algorithm (ACA) that enables distributed agents to share the average value of common state variable by only direct communication among neighboring agents. The agents installed in EV chargers control charge/discharge power of the EV batteries so that their SOCs are synchronized based on the shared information of an average SOC. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated by time domain simulations based on a model of a large scale single-area power system in which a large amount of EV are assumed to be penetrated. The penetration level of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) has a potential to be remarkably increased in the near future. As a result, the smart power systems will have new challenges and opportunities. The energy storing capability of PEVs is an attractive capability that enables PEVs to participate in providing ancillary services, e.g., load frequency control (LFC). This paper evaluates the participation of PEVs in load frequency control of a microgrid (MG) by using a decentralized multi-agent based control system. According to the proposed multi-agent based scheme, each PEV is considered as an agent that makes a synchronized decision for the participation in the LFC according to the global information. The required global information is discovered through the average consensus algorithm (ACA). The effect of time delay on the proposed method is investigated. Simulation studies are carried out in MATLAB-Simulink and show the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized control scheme.
