While the fifth generation (5G) of wireless networks is currently being rolled out, wireless networks still need further development to meet the requirements of dramatically increasing numbers of users and new applications and the resulting traffic expected in the coming decade and beyond. The sixth generation (6G) of wireless networks is envisioned to respond to this by providing services with massive access, ultra-reliability, low latency, intelligence, and security while maximizing the spectral/energy/cost efficiency. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted considerable research attention due to their mobility and ability to line-of-sight (LoS) coverage in areas that suffer from low channel quality. However, how to characterize a UAV's coverage area is a challenging problem and has not been thoroughly studied. To address this issue, in this paper we investigate the coverage performance of base station (BS) to UAV communications with a number of interfering mobile users. We first establish a Nakagami- m fading channel model for BS-to-UAV wireless communications. Then, we derive a closed-form expression for the UAV's average coverage probability under the scenario of interfering mobile users. Finally, numerical results confirm our derived analytical results and evaluate the UAV's performance under different scenarios that anticipate 6G wireless networking models.

Optimal Duplex Mode Selection for D2D-Aided Underlaying Cellular Networks

Both Device-to-device (D2D) and full-duplex (FD) have been widely recognized as spectral efficient techniques in the fifth-generation wireless communications systems. By enabling FD mode in D2D communications, the attainable spectrum efficiency can be (in theory) up to twice as high as that of conventional half-duplex (HD) mode D2D technology, provided that the self-interference signal in the former can be sufficiently suppressed. Considering the fact that FD technology does not always outperform the HD technology in arbitrary channel condition, we will delve into the FD gain as well as its preconditions for acquisition in this paper. In particular, the performance of D2D-aided underlaying cellular networks is investigated by assuming that the D2D users are capable of operating at both HD and FD modes. Under a given user workload, the sum throughput in each DU is shown to be always improved by activating D2D links despite an extra DU-induced interference could be imposed on its co-spectrum cellular users. Numerical results show that the FD-D2D mode exhibits its superiority in terms of sum throughput than the HD-D2D mode in a light-workload scenario even if a non-ideal SI cancellation has been implemented in the former, but the latter pulls back a game in a heavy-workload scenario. Furthermore, to maximize the sum throughput, an appropriate mode-selection scheme (i.e., by choosing either FD or HD mode in the current time-slot for each individual D2D user) should be implemented for sufficiently exploiting the FD gain according to the instantaneous radio frequency environment.

Cellular networks are usually modelled as a Poisson point process (PPP). However, in urban area, the small base stations (SBSs) are ordinarily clustered around hotspots rather than be uniformly distributed. In addition, the existing models are widely used in two-dimensional (2D) space which is not suitable for the three-dimensional (3-D) environment in dense urban area. In this paper, a new 3-D model is proposed in which the SBSs follow a Matern cluster process (MCP). Then the expressions of the average coverage probability and the energy efficiency (EE) are derived, especially the new formula of the conditional probability generating function (PGFL). The numerical results show the accuracy of our derivation.

Modelling and analysis of heterogeneous cellular networks using a matern cluster process

Heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) are usually modelled as a Poisson point process (PPP) due to mathematical tractability. However, in urban areas, small cells are more likely to cluster around hotspots rather than be uniformly distributed. Meanwhile, in reality, small cell locations are not completely independent of the macro base station (MBS) locations. To capture both features, the authors propose a new modelling method considering inter-tier dependence for a two-tier HCN, where MBSs follow a PPP, small cells follow a Matern cluster process and are not allowed to be deployed inside the MBS exclusion regions (i.e. within a prescribed distance from each MBS). Approximate expressions of the average coverage probability and the area spectral efficiency (ASE) are obtained, respectively. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the derivations. It is observed that the model can achieve a good tradeoff between coverage and ASE, and if the small cell density in this model is kept identical to the HCN without inter-tier dependence, both coverage and ASE can benefit from involving the inter-tier dependence in the HCN.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication has huge potential for capacity and coverage enhancements for next generation cellular networks. The number of potential nodes for D2D communication is an important parameter that directly impacts the system capacity. In this letter, we derive an analytic expression for average coverage probability of cellular user and corresponding number of potential D2D users. In this context, mature framework of stochastic geometry and Poisson point process have been used. The retention probability has been incorporated in Laplace functional to capture reduced path-loss and shortest distance criterion based D2D pairing. The numerical results show a close match between analytic expression and simulation setup.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication is being considered an important traffic offloading mechanism for future cellular networks. Coupled with pro-active device caching, it offers huge potential for capacity and coverage enhancements. In order to ensure maximum capacity enhancement, number of nodes for direct communication needs to be identified. In this paper, we derive analytic expression that relates number of D2D nodes (i.e., D2D user density) and average coverage probability of reference D2D receiver. Using stochastic geometry and poisson point process, we introduce retention probability within cooperation region and shortest distance based selection criterion to precisely quantify interference due to D2D pairs in coverage area. The simulation setup and numerical evaluation validates the closed-form expression.

Bootstrap confidence regions in multinomial sampling

Power divergences can be used to give a measure of distance between two probability vectors. In multinomial sampling arguments can be substituted by empirical and theoretical proportions to obtain confidence regions of parameters. In this paper the bootstrap versions of these confidence regions are constructed. Monte Carlo simulation experiments are carried out to calculate average coverage probabilities and to compare the behavior of the introduced procedures. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Simultaneous confidence regions for proportions of a single multinomial population, and for a finite number of contrasts from several multinomial populations are proposed. In this paper bootstrap methods are used to construct confidence regions. We compare the performance of bootstrap methods with other methods in terms of average coverage probability by Monte Carlo simulation. Advantages of the bootstrap methods are discussed. For the class F-0 = {F-0 : theta is an element of Theta} of natural exponential family of distributions having power variance function, an appropriate sequential procedure for constructing confidence intervals of fixed-proportional accuracy for the mean is proposed. The performance of the procedure is measured using the average coverage probability, for which asymptotic expansion is obtained. The usual estimator <(x)over bar(t)>, where t is an appropriate stopping time, is known to be biased. A class of bias-corrected interval estimates is proposed and in some cases their performance is shown to be better than that of an interval estimate with no bias correction.
