New design of a linear double-sided printed dipole array based on bat algorithm for interference suppression in the first sidelobe direction

This study proposes a design of a double-sided printed dipole (DSPD) antenna array with a low first sidelobe level (FSLL) for interference suppression. The proposed array consists of ten DSPD antennas based on the Rogers RO4003C substrate (e(r) = 3.55). The FSLL has been compressed by imposing a single null at the centre of the first sidelobe. The excitation power distribution of the array has been calculated by using the bat algorithm with the amplitude-only control technique and has been implemented by a series-fed network. A back reflector, which is based on an FR4 substrate (e(r) = 4.4), has been used to improve the maximum gain. The simulation results show that the FSLL can be reduced with a null deep level (NDL) of -40 dB in theE-plane at the frequency of 3.5 GHz, while the maximum gain of the array is around 17.7 dBi, and the bandwidth is 600 MHz (3.3-3.9 GHz) with -10 dB ofS(11). A prototype of the proposed DSPD antenna array has been fabricated and measured. A good agreement can be achieved between simulation and measurement results.

In this work, modified constant modulus algorithm based on bat algorithm is proposed for wireless sensor communications systems. The bat algorithm is a swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, which mainly used to solve optimization problems. The proposed algorithm focused on modified constant modulus algorithm, which is also applicable to the constant modulus algorithm. The error function of blind equalization algorithm is used as the evaluation function of the bat algorithm, and then the initial value of the weight vector is calculated adaptively by the bat algorithm. Theoretical analysis is provided to illustrate that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence speed than the original one and is suitable for almost all blind channel equalization algorithms. The simulation results support the newly proposed improved algorithm. The proposed algorithm could be applied to some more complex wireless channel environments to improve the reception performance of sensor communication systems.

Optimal design of a smart post-buckled beam actuator using bat algorithm: simulations and experiments

The optimized design of a smart post-buckled beam actuator (PBA) is performed in this study. A smart material based piezoceramic stack actuator is used as a prime-mover to drive the buckled beam actuator. Piezoceramic actuators are high force, small displacement devices;they possess high energy density and have high bandwidth. In this study, bench top experiments are conducted to investigate the angular tip deflections due to the PBA. A new design of a linear-tolinear motion amplification device (LX-4) is developed to circumvent the small displacement handicap of piezoceramic stack actuators. LX-4 enhances the piezoceramic actuator mechanical leverage by a factor of four. The PBA model is based on dynamic elastic stability and is analyzed using the Mathieu-Hill equation. A formal optimization is carried out using a newly developed meta-heuristic nature inspired algorithm, named as the bat algorithm (BA). The BA utilizes the echolocation capability of bats. An optimized PBA in conjunction with LX-4 generates end rotations of the order of 15 degrees at the output end. The optimized PBA design incurs less weight and induces large end rotations, which will be useful in development of various mechanical and aerospace devices, such as helicopter trailing edge flaps, micro and nano aerial vehicles and other robotic systems.

Multi-objective optimization using bat algorithm for shell and tube heat exchangers

Optimization is carried out based on multivariable functions such as effectiveness and total cost. These two objective functions are plotted by considering various design parameters such as baffle cuts, baffle spacing's, pitch, tube length, tube layout pattern in order to get Pareto optimal solutions and it captures the trade-off between those two objectives. This multi-objective optimization is performed using a novel computational technique called bat algorithm. This algorithm is based on echolocation features of micro bats and frequency tuning technique to increase the diversity of the solutions in the population. It proves to be very efficient with a typical start. In order to verify the algorithm a case study has been taken from the open literature. This paper also presents the results of genetic algorithm for different tube layout patterns. The Pareto fronts obtained from both genetic algorithm and bat algorithm are found to be similar in nature. From the Pareto optimal solution of the bat algorithm the cost is lowered by a maximum of 13.7% and minimum of 9.2%. It is found that the effectiveness has been reduced by about 3% when the cost minimization taken place. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Amplitude Angle Modulated bat algorithm With Application to Zero-One Knapsack Problem

Angle-modulated bat algorithm (AMBA) provides a technique that enables the bat algorithm (BA) developed for continuous problems to operate in binary spaces, which employs an angle modulation technique to generate a bit string corresponding to a binary problem solution and applies the BA to evolve the coefficients of the trigonometric generating function. However, there are some identified limitations of the original AMBA. This paper proposes a new AMBA variant called amplitude AMBA (A-AMBA). The A-AMBA is compared with the AMBA and several other binary heuristic algorithms on 13 classical benchmark functions and 12 zero-one knapsack problems. The obtained results indicate that the performance of this variant is superior to the AMBA in many problem cases.

Optimal spot pricing in electricity market with inelastic load using constrained bat algorithm

In restructured electricity markets, an effective transmission pricing is required to address transmission issues and to generate correct economic signals. These prices depend on generator bids, load levels and transmission network constraints. A congestion charge is incurred when the system is constrained due to physical limitations. Spot pricing or Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP) or Nodal pricing is a popular method in restructured power markets to address these issues. This paper presents a DC optimal power flow (DCOPF) based spot pricing approach in single auction model with fuel cost minimization as objective function. This is solved with a heuristic technique called bat algorithm and the results are compared with Linear Programming (LP) and Genetic algorithm (GA) approaches in a constrained pool based restructured electricity market. The developed models have been tested on IEEE 14 bus system, New England 39 bus system and 75 bus Indian practical power system. Different cases such as without loss, concentrated loss and distributed loss are considered for this problem. Two types of generator bids i.e., fixed bids and linear bids are considered for generators. Load is assumed to be inelastic. Generator profit, ISO profit and Social surplus during congestion have been computed in all the cases. In most of the cases studied, bat algorithm is proven to be better than LP and GA algorithms for fuel cost minimization and social welfare (Social surplus) improvement. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. bat algorithm (BA) has been widely used to solve the diverse kinds of optimisation problems. In accordance with the optimisation problems, balance between the two major components: exploitation and exploration, plays a significant role in meta-heuristic algorithms. Several researchers have worked on the performance for the improvement of these algorithms. BA faces one of the major issues in high dimensions. In our work, we proposed a new variant of BA by introducing the torus walk (TW-BA) to solve this issue. To improve the local search capability instead of using the standard uniform walk, torus walk is incorporated in this paper. The simulation results performed on 19 standard benchmark functions depicts the efficiency and effectiveness of TW-BA compared with the traditional BA, directional bat algorithm, particle swarm optimisation, cuckoo search, harmony search algorithm, differential evolution and genetic algorithm. The promising experimental result suggests the superiority of proposed technique.

Adaptive optimized DTC-SVM using metaheuristic bat algorithm for DSIM fed by IMC based on robust synergetic speed controller

Direct torque control (DTC) suffers from the large ripples of the torque and flux, which leads to deteriorating the system performances. Replacing the conventional back-to-back converter with an indirect matrix converter (IMC) can reduce the torque and flux ripples in interior dual stator induction motor. However, the ripples can be still large, and the low harmonic distortion appears in the input current caused by the lack of synchronization between the two stages of the IMC. In order to overcome this problem with improved dynamic performances (torque, flux ripples, and reducing the low harmonic distortion in the input current), a new DTC based on space vector modulation (SVM) with the synchronization between the two stage of IMC is proposed. On the other hand, an adaptive PI controller based on a gradient descent algorithm using metaheuristic bat algorithm is presented to generate: the desired stator voltages, and the switching states of the inverter stage by the SVM. Furthermore, the control scheme performance is enhanced by inserting a robust synergetic controller (SC) in the outer loop for speed regulation. The obtained simulation results under different operating conditions illustrate the benefit of the proposed control technique, also, it demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed control approach for real-world systems.

Power versus voltage curves of partial shading photovoltaic (PV) systems contain several local peaks (LPs) and one global peak (GP). Most conventional maximum power point tracker (MPPT) techniques may not follow the GP under partial shading conditions (PSC). The use of metaheuristic techniques such as the bat algorithm (BA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) can overcome these obstacles. All problems inherent in the using of BA as MPPT of PV systems has been discussed and solved in this paper. The first problem is the random initial values of bats that may cause premature convergence. Therefore, the initial values of bats were modified to be close to the anticipated positions of peaks to reduce the convergence time and improve the chance of capturing the GP. The second problem occurs when shading pattern changes the value and position of the GP which is not configurable because all bats are concentrated at the previous GP;this can be resolved by BA re-initialization. The the third problem is the GP memorized in the execution of the BA code forces the PV system to work at the duty ratio of the highest GP ever seen, which may not be the real GP. This problem is solved by updating the memorized GP. This paper also proposes a new criterion for selecting the optimal swarm size against number of peaks to reduce the convergence time and improve the chance of capturing the GP. To the authors & x2019;knowledge, most of these problems inherent in the BA have hitherto not been addressed in the literature. The simulation and experimental results obtained from the proposed modified BA (MBA) with re-initialization have been compared to the PSO and grey wolf optimization (GWO) techniques which show the superiority of using MBA strategy in the MPPT of partial shading PV systems.

Multi-Modal bat algorithm with Improved Search (MMBAIS)

bat algorithm (BA), is a relatively new nature inspired metaheuristic algorithm, which works on the echolocation capabilities of micro-bats. Although being highly efficient, it suffers from pre-mature convergence. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a multimodal variant of BA, called Multi-Modal bat algorithm (MMBA), which includes the foraging behaviour of bats. The standard BA exhibits a random movement for catching its prey. This work also proposes an enhancement to these exploration capabilities of bat, called bat algorithm with Improved Search (BAIS). Each of these variants is tested for its efficacy against BA over 30 benchmark functions. An integration of both these modifications, the Multi-Modal bat algorithm with Improved Search (MMBAIS), is also subsequently compared against the same 30 benchmark functions. Results established the superiority of MMBAIS over BA. Experimental comparison of MMBAIS with a recent variant of BA also revealed the efficiency of MMBAIS. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
