DSTATCOM allocation in distribution networks considering load variations using bat algorithm

This paper proposes a new method of scheduling for optimal placement and sizing of Distribution STATic COMpensator in the radial distribution networks to minimize the power loss. In the proposed method Voltage Stability Index is used to search the optimal placement for installation of DSTATCOM. Optimal size of DSTATCOM is found by using bat algorithm. The feeder loads are varied by linearly from light load to peak load with a step size of 1%. In each load step, the optimal placement and sizing for DSTATCOM are calculated. By using the Curve Fitting Technique, the optimal sizing for DSTATCOM per load level is formulated in the form of generalized equation. The proposed approach will help the Distribution Network Operators to select the DSTATCOM size according to the load changes. To check the feasibility of the proposed method, system has been tested on two standard buses such as IEEE 33 and 69 bus radial distribution systems. (C) 2015 Ain Shams University. Multilayer embedded bat algorithm for B-spline curve reconstruction

This paper presents a new method called multilayer embedded bat algorithm (ME-bat) to solve the general curve reconstruction problem with free-form parametric B-splines. Opposed to previous approaches in the literature, this method computes the optimal values of all free variables (data parameters, breakpoints, and poles), a very difficult task because they are strongly intertwined in a highly nonlinear way. The method is based on the idea of applying the bat algorithm at different layers: a main bat algorithm at an upper layer to compute the breakpoints and a second bat algorithm at a lower layer to compute the data parameters. This second bat algorithm is embedded into the first one and executed for each breakpoint vector of the population and at each iteration step of the main algorithm. Then, the poles are calculated by least-squares minimization through SVD. The method has been applied to three real-world engineering examples. The experimental results show that the method performs very well, being able to recover the underlying shape of data with high accuracy. A comparison with eleven alternative methods (including six classical methods in the field and all the metaheuristic methods applied so far to this problem) shows that this method outperforms the previous approaches in the field for all instances in the benchmark.

Interval type-2 fuzzy logic for dynamic parameter adaptation in the bat algorithm

We describe in this paper a proposed enhancement of the bat algorithm (BA) using interval type-2 fuzzy logic for dynamically adapting the BA parameters. The BAis a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the behavior of micro bats that use the echolocation feature for hunting their prey, and this algorithm has been recently applied to different optimization problems obtaining good results. We propose a new method for dynamic parameter adaptation in the BA using interval type-2 fuzzy logic, where an especially design fuzzy system is responsible for determining the optimal values for the parameters of the algorithm. Simulations results on a set of benchmark mathematical functions with the interval type-2 fuzzy bat algorithm outperform the traditional bat algorithm and a type-1 fuzzy variant of BA. The proposed integration of the type-2 fuzzy system into the BA has the goal of improving the performance of BA for the future applicability of the algorithm in more complex optimization problems where higher levels of uncertainty need to be handled, like in the optimization of fuzzy controllers.

Multi-objective optimization using bat algorithm for shell and tube heat exchangers

Optimization is carried out based on multivariable functions such as effectiveness and total cost. These two objective functions are plotted by considering various design parameters such as baffle cuts, baffle spacing's, pitch, tube length, tube layout pattern in order to get Pareto optimal solutions and it captures the trade-off between those two objectives. This multi-objective optimization is performed using a novel computational technique called bat algorithm. This algorithm is based on echolocation features of micro bats and frequency tuning technique to increase the diversity of the solutions in the population. It proves to be very efficient with a typical start. In order to verify the algorithm a case study has been taken from the open literature. This paper also presents the results of genetic algorithm for different tube layout patterns. The Pareto fronts obtained from both genetic algorithm and bat algorithm are found to be similar in nature. From the Pareto optimal solution of the bat algorithm the cost is lowered by a maximum of 13.7% and minimum of 9.2%. It is found that the effectiveness has been reduced by about 3% when the cost minimization taken place. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimal design of a smart post-buckled beam actuator using bat algorithm: simulations and experiments

The optimized design of a smart post-buckled beam actuator (PBA) is performed in this study. A smart material based piezoceramic stack actuator is used as a prime-mover to drive the buckled beam actuator. Piezoceramic actuators are high force, small displacement devices;they possess high energy density and have high bandwidth. In this study, bench top experiments are conducted to investigate the angular tip deflections due to the PBA. A new design of a linear-tolinear motion amplification device (LX-4) is developed to circumvent the small displacement handicap of piezoceramic stack actuators. LX-4 enhances the piezoceramic actuator mechanical leverage by a factor of four. The PBA model is based on dynamic elastic stability and is analyzed using the Mathieu-Hill equation. A formal optimization is carried out using a newly developed meta-heuristic nature inspired algorithm, named as the bat algorithm (BA). The BA utilizes the echolocation capability of bats. An optimized PBA in conjunction with LX-4 generates end rotations of the order of 15 degrees at the output end. The optimized PBA design incurs less weight and induces large end rotations, which will be useful in development of various mechanical and aerospace devices, such as helicopter trailing edge flaps, micro and nano aerial vehicles and other robotic systems.

Multi-Modal bat algorithm with Improved Search (MMBAIS)

bat algorithm (BA), is a relatively new nature inspired metaheuristic algorithm, which works on the echolocation capabilities of micro-bats. Although being highly efficient, it suffers from pre-mature convergence. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a multimodal variant of BA, called Multi-Modal bat algorithm (MMBA), which includes the foraging behaviour of bats. The standard BA exhibits a random movement for catching its prey. This work also proposes an enhancement to these exploration capabilities of bat, called bat algorithm with Improved Search (BAIS). Each of these variants is tested for its efficacy against BA over 30 benchmark functions. An integration of both these modifications, the Multi-Modal bat algorithm with Improved Search (MMBAIS), is also subsequently compared against the same 30 benchmark functions. Results established the superiority of MMBAIS over BA. Experimental comparison of MMBAIS with a recent variant of BA also revealed the efficiency of MMBAIS. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. MOBA: Multi Objective bat algorithm for Combinatorial Optimization in VLSI

It has to be conceded that the complexity of any integrated chip gets abated despite of the increased complexity. Notwithstanding, the perplexity of computing escalates exponentially. Thus computational optimization scores in the scene wherein several conflicting objectives has to be optimized without any compromise. Several years, scientists have solved any optimization problem by cogitating and considering it to be a Single Objective Optimization Problem (SOOP). However, mathematics has eulogized Multi Objective Optimization (MOO) methodologies to solve the conflicting tradeoffs. Besides, there is an instigation to converge our research to biologically inspired metaheuristics to solve optimization problems as it is evident from the anthologies and research archive that these heuristics perpetually doing well in solving optimization problems and that too in extension MOO problems. Researchers are captivated in the field to observe the perplexed processes of nature and mimic it solve optimization problems. In this research work, we have contemplated on the Multi Objective bat algorithm (MOBA) a biologically inspired metaheuristics and have successfully applied to solve the problem of floorplanning in VLSI design. The peculiar character of echolocation of microbats are being mimicked and applied to solve the problems in VLSI design. The intriguing attributes of bats; how it strives to take up its prey, are fathomed out and been adopted in problem solving. The problem is considered as a MOO problem wherein equal importance were given to wirelength minimization and dead space minimization. The results are discussed and rivalled with several other bio-inspired algorithms and are portrayed. To comprehend, the MOBA worked well in VLSI floorplanning optimization wherein the problems were considered with a single objective and multi objective fashion.

Hybrid bat algorithm for minimum dominating set problem

Graph domination is one of the NP-Complete problems that cannot be solved exactly in polynomial time. Hence, we propose a stochastic approach to tackle the minimum dominating set problem (MDS). The main aim of MDS is to find the minimum number of nodes that covers all other nodes in a graph. Thus, we present the problem in binary sequence to activate a node to be a dominator by setting it to the value of 1, or deactivate it by assigning its value to 0. In this paper, the stochastic search represented by hybrid swarm intelligence algorithm to find the smallest set of nodes that dominate the graph. This method uses population-based approach called bat algorithm (BA) which explore a wide area of the search space, thus it is capable in the diversification procedure. However, population-based algorithms are not good in exploiting the search space in comparison to single-solution based methods, therefore we included simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to balance between exploitation and exploration in order to reach a best possible solution. Our proposed method was experimented on benchmark datasets, which yielded results comparable to the state-of-the-art MDS methods. It can be concluded that the proposed method is an effective solution for MDS problem.

Optimal design of L₁-norm based IIR digital differentiators and integrators using the bat algorithm

In this study, new infinite impulse response (IIR) digital differentiators of second, third and fourth orders based on optimising the L-1-error fitness function using the bat algorithm (BA) are proposed. The coefficients of numerator and denominator of the differentiators are computed by minimising the L-1-norm of the error fitness function along with imposing the constraint for the location of poles and zeros within the unit circle to ensure minimum phase. The transfer function of the differentiators are inverted and transformed into the digital integrators of the same orders. The results obtained for the solutions by the proposed L-1-based BA (L-1-BA) are superior to the designs using other techniques such as particle swarm optimisation and real-coded genetic algorithm. The designed optimal differentiator and integrator are compared with the existing models and are found to be of high accuracy and flatness in a wide frequency range along with minimum absolute magnitude error. The mean relative error (dB) is obtained as low as -67dB and -73dB for the proposed differentiators and integrators, respectively.

Application of DOE and metaheuristic bat algorithm for well placement and individual well controls optimization

The design of an optimal gas field development and production management is a complicating task because of influencing various factors on decision-making process. Typical factors include number and type of wells, well locations, and production constraints, economic factors of capital expenditure, operating costs, gas sale price, and different engineering and geological parameters. The situation is further complicated due to uncertainty associated with the nonlinear problem of field development optimization. In this study, first, design of experiment (DOE) techniques including uniform design (UD) and Box-Behnken design (BBD) are used for performance prediction of water drive gas reservoirs. Next, a new metaheuristic bat inspired algorithm (BA) will be applied in optimization process of objective function. Undiscounted net present value (UNPV) is used as an objective function for the determination of optimal number of wells (N), individual well locations (I and J), production rate (Q(g)), perforation thickness (H-p) and the limit of tubing head pressure (THP) for different average reservoir permeability (K-G) and permeability anisotropy (K-v/K-h). In this regard, part of gas reservoir with an active bottom aquifer based on actual data is simulated in order to predict gas recovery factor and cumulative water production data that are necessary for performing production optimization. The results show that reducing gas production rate increases the UNPV. Reducing production rate increases ultimate recovery factor and decreases cumulative water production. However, considering time value of money, it is favorable to produce with high rates and consequently deplete the reservoir over short time scales in order to compensate the reduction of profit.
