Proper and rapid identification of malfunctions (transients) is of premier importance for the safe operation of nuclear power plants. Feedforward neural networks trained with the backpropagation algorithm are frequently applied to model simulated nuclear power plant malfunctions. The correct identification of unlabeled transients-or transients of the "don't-know" type-have proven to be especially challenging. A novel hybrid neural network methodology is presented which correctly classifies unlabeled transients. From this analysis the importance for properly accommodating practical aspects such as the drift of electronics elements, numerical integration accumulating errors, and the digitization of simulated and actual plant signals became obvious. Various ANN based models were successfully applied to identify labeled and unlabeled malfunctions of the Hungarian Paks nuclear power plant simulator.

The human brain shows the capability of adjusting the gain of neurons at the sensory periphery. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the backpropagation learning algorithm with adaptive neuronal gain, and compare its performance with the conventional one, and with the one combining dynamic learning rate optimization. Simulation results have shown that the algorithm can achieve the goal of fast convergence, and can alleviate the problem of local minima with a moderate increment of computation and storage burden.

To counter the disadvantage that TDNN take up long training time, the paper puts forward several improved methods of TDNN in phoneme recognition. The comparison of proposed methods with early method shows that they are effective in increasing the convergence speed of TDNN: (1) the error backpropagation algorithm trains initially the weights of the network; (2) the single-extreme output is replaced by the double-extreme output; (3) changing the energy function updates weights according to output errors; (4) the weight update criterion of error backpropagation is changed from the average weights of all corresponding time-delay frames to the layers. All of these make the training time decrease from 23 hours and 25 minutes to 45 minutes. The convergence speed increases by tens of times when the complexity of the network increases just a little more.

Presents an empirical comparison among four different methods of handling missing inputs. Eight different classification problems are used for the comparison, and the performance of the methods is obtained for several percentages, 0%, 5%, 10%, 30% and 40%, of missing inputs in the problem. There is one method, which has the best performance in the eight different problems. The method is based on a generalization of backpropagation to interval arithmetic and a codification during training of every missing input by the interval [0, 1].

During anaesthesia mean blood pressure (MBP) is monitored to maintain haemodynamic stability and to assess the level of consciousness. Auditory Evoked Potentials (AEP) are monitored. The purpose of this paper is to compare two soft computing methodologies in terms of prediction of MBP and an AEP-index (AEPi). The Fuzzy Inductive Reasoning (FIR) is a methodology derived from the General System Theory that allows to study the conceptual behaviour modes of systems. The main tasks of FIR are the identification of qualitative models and the prediction of future output states. The Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is a hybrid neuro-fuzzy methodology, i.e. a fuzzy inference system (FIS) tuned with backpropagation algorithm based on input-output pairs comprising the training data. The FIR model identification technique was used to obtain the causal and temporal structure (relevant inputs and delays) of the models that represent the systems under study. These structures were used by both ANFIS and FIR for the prediction of future output states. The results showed that both methodologies were able to predict MBP and DAI; however no significant differences between the methodologies were found.

This paper describes an approach for classifying electromyographic (EMG) signals using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) with genetic algorithm (GA) and hidden Markov models (HMMs) hybrid classifier. Instead of using MLP as probability generators for HMMs we propose to use MLP with GA as the second classifiers to increase discrimination rates of myoelectric patterns. The GA for MLP was driven to boost the learning time when it applied to backpropagation (BP) algorithm. This strategy is proposed to overcome weak discrimination and to consider dynamic properties of EMG signals. Four discrimination strategies (HMM-MLP, HMM-GA-MLP, HMM-counter propagation network (CPN), and HMM-GA-CPN) for discriminating signals representative of 6 primitive class of motions are described and compared. The proposed strategy increase the discrimination results considerably. Results are presented to support this approach.

Neural network approaches and statistical classification methods based on consensus from several data sources are considered with respect to classification and integration of multitype data. The consensus theoretic methods need weighting mechanisms to control the influence of each data source in the combined classification. The weights are optimized in order to improve the combined classification accuracies. A nonlinear method which utilizes a neural network is used and trained on a feature reduced input set. This nonlinear method gives excellent results in experiments along with other neural network models.

We introduce a unified framework for nonlinear signal processing with finite normal mixtures (FNM) by using maximum partial likelihood (MPL) theory. We show that the equivalence of MPL to accumulated relative entropy minimization is valid for the FNM. Then, we define the information geometry of MPL and use the result to derive the EM algorithm for distribution learning based on the FNM model. The superior convergence of the EM algorithm as compared to the least relative entropy and the backpropagation algorithms is demonstrated by simulations. We also discuss the performance of the FNM based equalizers with different number of mixtures and observation vector sizes.

Multilayer perceptrons (MLP) were trained to mutually predict nonlinearly coupled identical Henon systems. Several combinations of input and target time series were presented to networks of different structure during training. After presenting the trained networks with a short segment of Henon data they were able to generate Henon time series of variable duration. This was verified by comparing the attractors of the training set and the generated data. Furthermore, the performance of mutual prediction of data outside the training set was found to be dependent on the strength of coupling among the chaotic time series and on their similarities regarding their generation equations. The method was also applied to univariate and multivariate ECoG data. The motivation of this work is to predict and analyse the development of epileptic seizures by searching for recurring nonlinear dependencies and similarities in multivariate ECoG recordings.

This paper proposes an approach for reliably identifying complex Arabic phonemes in continuous speech. This is proposed to be done by a mixture of artificial neural experts. These experts are typically time delay neural networks using an original version of the autoregressive backpropagation algorithm (AR-TDNN). A module using specific cues generated by an ear model operates the speech phone segmentation. Perceptual linear predictive (PLP) coefficients, energy, zero crossing rate and their derivatives are used as input parameters. Serial and parallel architectures of AR-TDNN have been implemented and confronted to a monolithic system using a simple backpropagation algorithm.
