Generation scheduling is very important for maintaining the stability of power system. Generation of any unit or plant is varied according to the scheduling chart prepared by the load dispatch centre (LDC). For proper handling of this large data array, it is important to reduce the bulk volume of information by proper compression algorithm. In that context, an simple approach based on basic arithmetic coding is developed in MATLAB environment to compress the large scheduling data array. The compression ratio being obtained for various set of scheduling data is high which implies reduced memory requirement for storing the encrypted information and reduced characters for transmitting the information. Compression ratio being obtained varies with number of digits of elements in data array and highest value is obtained with 3-digit elements. The work is scalable for compressing parameter monitoring data as well and similar results can be obtained with this enormous volume of data as well.

Data compression plays an important role for storing and transmitting text or multimedia information. This paper refers to a lossless data algorithm is developed in C-platform to compress character string based on basic arithmetic coding. At the preliminary stage, this algorithm was tested for the character array comprising of vowels only and the probability distribution is assumed arbitrarily. The result being obtained is encouraging with compression ratio far beyond unity. Though the algorithm was tested for vowels only but the work can be extended for any character array with probability of distribution as obtained from the survey of few randomly selected articles.

Differential Code Shift Keying (DCSK) communication scheme a modified version of spread spectrum technology meant for power line carrier communication (PLCC). In power line conditions, this modulation scheme has its own advantages over other conventional modulation techniques. Development of DCSK scheme in MATLAB environment to transmit character string suffers with longer superchirp length particularly for increased string length. This problem is eliminated by compressing the data string by employing basic arithmetic coding and Huffman coding based compression before transferring the information employing DCSK. In this paper, the performances for all the developed algorithms are compared to determine the advantages and drawbacks of algorithms.

MATLAB based DCSK communication scheme developed for PLCC based DAS requires longer time of execution at receiving end particularly with longer strings. In order to avoid the problem, basic arithmetic coding based lossless data compression method is proposed which can reduce the string size of string and consequently improve the performance of the system significantly. As conventional DAS deals mostly with integer values only, the algorithm is developed for integer string only. But this proposed method can be modified suitably and can be implemented for character strings successfully.
