This paper proposes an extension of total variation (TV) image deconvolution technique that enhances image quality over classical TV while preserving algorithm speed. Enhancement is achieved by altering the regularization term to include directional decompositions before the gradient operator. Such decompositions select areas of the image with characteristics that are more suitable for a certain type of gradient than another. Speed is guaranteed by the use of the augmented Lagrangian approach as basis for the algorithm. Experimental evidence that the proposed approach improves TV deconvolution is provided, as well as an outline for a future work aiming to support and substantiate the proposed method.

We considers the global observability of general polynomial systems. To test the observability of nonlinear systems, distinguishability is often used. It is not guaranteed that a finite set of Lie derivatives is sufficient to check the criterion. On the basis of the results of commutative algebra, we show that computing only a finite set of Lie derivatives is sufficient to check the criterion for polynomial systems. Then, we derive the global observability conditions, which give necessity and sufficiency. Finally, examples demonstrate the proposed criterion for testing the observability.

In this paper, we propose a feature selection and transformation approach for universal steganalysis based on genetic algorithm (GA) and higher order statistics. We choose three types of typical statistics as candidate features and twelve kinds of basic functions as candidate transformations. The GA is utilized to select a subset of candidate features, a subset of candidate transformations and coefficients of the logistic regression model for blind image steganalysis. The logistic regression model is then used as the classifier. Experimental results show that the GA based approach increases the blind detection accuracy and also provides a good generality by identifying an untrained stego-algorithm.

The authors investigate the problem of the structural observability. This work is based on a Groebner basis algorithm. The applicability of the algorithm is illustred by applying it on an example used by Bagajewicz. The first part gives an overview on Groebner bases. The second part develops the concept of observability bases and in the third part we show how to use these bases to make optimal the disponibility of the system by studying the reliability. Strategies for optimally locating sensors based on reliability and cost-minimization are developed.

This study focuses on the faster exact single pattern string matching algorithms. In all solutions, two variants of BOM, EBOM and FBOM are very efficient. We improved them and presented two algorithms named Simplified-EBOM and Simplified-FBOM through removing the unnecessary branches and accomplishing the core calculation of the algorithm in a 1-dimensional array. The experimental results indicated that Simplified-EBOM is fast for short patterns and it is 12% faster than its basis algorithm on average.

Wavelet-packet based best-basis selection has become a popular method for image compression particularly for the textured images. In this work, we propose architecture for the best basis algorithm for images using lifting-based wavelet transform and threshold function as cost function. The architecture for the best-basis selection from 2D wavelet packet is also described. The proposed architecture has been described in VHDL at the RTL level, simulated successfully for its functional correctness and implemented in FPGA

This paper describes novel, computationally efficient approaches to source separation of underdetermined instantaneous two-channel mixtures. A best basis algorithm is applied to trees of local cosine bases to determine a sparse transform. We assume that the mixing parameters are known and focus on demixing sources by binary time-frequency masking. We describe a method for deriving a best local cosine basis from the mixtures by minimising an l1 norm cost function. This basis is adapted to the input of the masking process. Then, we investigate how to increase sparsity by adapting local cosine bases to the expected output of a single source instead of to the input mixtures. The heuristically derived cost function maximises the energy of the transform coeffi- cients associated with a particular direction. Experiments on a mixture of four musical instruments are performed, and results are compared. It is shown that local cosine bases can give better results than fixed-basis representations.

In this paper we give an algorithm with complexity O(mu 2 ) to solve Hermite multivariate polynomial interpolation with mu conditions on its Hasse derivatives. In the case of bivariate interpolation used to perform list-decoding on Reed-Solomon of length n and dimension k with multiplicity m on each point, it permits to obtain a complexity in O(n 2 m 4 ) which does not depend on the rate k/n and better than previously known complexity in O( n 2 m 5 (n/k) (1/2) ). This algorithm can also be used for recent interpolation list-decoding with three and more variables. For interpolation on polynomial with n points and M variables with prescribed multiplication order m the general complexity of the algorithm is O(n 2 m 2M )

We propose a new approach to simultaneously segment, compress, and denoise a given noisy signal by combining our compact signal representation scheme called polyhannonic local sine transform (PHLST) and the minimum description length (MDL) criterion. PHLST first generates a redundant set of local pieces of an input signal each of which is supported on a dyadic subinterval and is approximated by a combination of an algebraic polynomial of low order (e.g. linear or cubic) and a trigonometric polynomial. This combination of polynomials compensates their shortcomings and yields a compact representation of the local piece. To select the best nonredundant combination of the local pieces from this redundant set, we use the MDL criterion with and without actually quantizing the relevant parameters. The resulting representation gives rise to simultaneous segmentation, compression, and denoising of the original data. We shall demonstrate its superiority over the best basis algorithm using the local cosine dictionary with the sparsity criterion
