In this paper, we present a wavelet packet image coding algorithm based on quadtree classification and UTCQ. It is composed of four parts: (1) wavelet packet decomposition and best basis selection based on a new cost function, (2) a quadtree classification procedure, used to classify the wavelet packet coefficients into two sets: a significant one and an insignificant one, (3) the universal trellis coded quantization, used to code the significant coefficients sets, (4) the entropy coder, used to code the indices of the universal trellis coded quantizer output. The image coding results, calculated from actual file sizes and images reconstructed by the decoding algorithm are either comparable to or surpass previous results for texture-rich images.

In this paper, we describe and analyze algorithms for advanced image coding on distributed-memory MIMD architectures. In particular, we consider a wavelet packet-based image codec using the concept of zerotree encoding. The main contribution of this work is the design of a parallel image coder composed of a wavelet packet decomposition in conjunction with the best basis algorithm followed by zerotree coding. Whereas two sensible parallelization techniques can be employed for the wavelet packet decomposition (subband-based partitioning and stripe partitioning), the zerotree coding step only allows one reasonable parallelization method (stripe partitioning). We investigate the advantages and drawbacks of all combinations and show experimental results obtained on a Siemens hpcLine cluster and a Cray T3E.

In this work we discuss an object-based wavelet image coding system which employs the wavelet packet best basis algorithm to adapt to each object separately. In addition to the increased functionality inherent to any object-based codec, the enhanced rate-distortion performance for images exhibiting objects with different frequency properties is shown.

We describe an Internet-based approach for teaching important concepts in a Junior-Senior level course on the design and analysis of data structures and algorithms (traditionally called CS7 or DS&A). The main idea of this educational paradigm is twofold. First, it provides fresh motivation for fundamental algorithms and data structures that are finding new applications in the context of the Internet, Second, it provides a source for introducing new algorithms and data structures that are derived from specific Internet applications . In this paper, we suggest some key pedagogical and curriculum updates that;can be made to the classic CS7/DS&A course to turn it into a course on Internet Algorithmics. We believe that such a course will stimulate new interest and excitement in material that is perceived by some students to be stale, boring, and purely theoretical. We argue that the foundational topics from CS7/DS&A should remain even when it is taught in an Internet-centric manner. This, of course, should come as no surprise to the seasoned computer scientist, who understands the value of algorithmic thinking.

Wavelet-based signal classification and compression techniques have gained substantial popularity due to their low computational costs, excellent localization properties, and the ability to choose from a large number of bases for signal representation. A difficulty with applying wavelet-based techniques is determining the best wavelet type and basis. For compression, the best-basis algorithm has been proposed to find the wavelet-packet basis with maximum energy compaction. The local discriminant basis (LDB) was previously introduced in the context of signal classification to find the best wavelet-packet basis with maximum class discrimination. In this paper, we apply the LDB to the problem of automatic target recognition. We describe the mechanics of the LDB as applied to one- and two-dimensional signals, and introduce a novel classification scheme that is tolerant to image scaling and moderate image translations and dilations.

There an contradictory reports on the usefulness of the Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) for features extraction. This is mainly the case of signals of non-stationary character. In this paper we examine this tool for a category of short non-stationary speech signals, namely voiceless plosive consonants /p/, /t/, /k/. Three approaches to feature selection have been implemented: Best basis search algorithm over the averaged wavelet packet coefficients of all data, Local Discriminant basis (LDB) algorithm, i.e. application of Best basis algorithm on discriminant measure between coefficients in three classes and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of the entropy matrices calculated from the wavelet packets for each class. The experiments conducted over the context independent plosives from speech database of Polish gave the classification rate higher for WPT based features than for traditional DFT based cepstral coefficients.

To enable identification of a time-varying Volterra model using a single input/output realisation, sequences from an orthonormal basis are used to approximate the time-variation. Our work concerns the choice of sequences from a library which comprises several bases. Using a library of wavelet packets allows the use of the best basis algorithm. We apply the best basis algorithm in order to select the wavelet packets for approximating the true system's time-variation in the model. The minimum entropy criterion determines the most efficient basis approximation enabling a minimum number of sequences to be used, leading to a more parsimonious model.

We describe a new suboptimal decoding technique for linear codes based on the calculation of maximum weight basis of the code. The idea is based on estimating the maximum number locations in a codeword which have the least probability of estimation error without violating the codeword structure. In this paper we discuss the details of the algorithm for a convolutional code. The error correcting capability of the convolutional code increases with the constraint length of the code. Unfortunately the decoding complexity of Viterbi (1967) algorithm grows exponentially with the constraint length. We also augment the maximal weight basis algorithm by incorporating the ideas of list decoding technique. The complexity of the algorithm grows only quadratically with the constraint length and the performance of the algorithm is comparable to the optimal Viterbi decoding method.
