Protein Structure Prediction (PSP) using sequence of amino acids is a multimodal optimization problem and belongs to NP hard class. Researchers and scientists put their efforts to design efficient computational intelligent algorithm for solving this kind of problem. bees algorithm (BA) is a swarm intelligence based algorithm inspired by the foraging behaviour of honey bees colony, already exhibits its potential ability for solving optimization problems. However, it may produce premature convergence when solving PSP like problems. To prevent this situation, Adaptive Polynomial Mutation based bees algorithm (APM-BA) has been proposed in this paper for predicting protein structure in 2D AB off-lattice model. In this strategy, each of best scout bees are mutated with adaptive polynomial mutation technique when their performances are no more improve during execution phase. The experiments are conducted on artificial and real protein sequences and numerical results show that the proposed algorithm has strong ability for solving PSP problem having minimum energy.

Electric machines designs for traction application are concerned with paying particular attention to power density and efficiency. Therefore, this paper is focused on applying bees algorithm (BA) for optimal design of Brushless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (BLPMSM) for propulsion application. The analytical approach for the motor magnetic circuit is performed using the radial instantaneous magnetic field distribution in the airgap under specified loading condition;taking into account the magnetic core saturation and motor overall performance. The design aims to maximize the power density. Therefore, the optimisation objective function is formed to minimise motor weight and maximise efficiency. While the bees algorithm (BA) is applied to search for the optimum design parameters;the optimised design is then verified using Finite Element Method (FEM). Comparing with an existing machine, called here basic motor;the obtained results show that motor weight can be reduced by approximately 20%, while motor output power is kept constant. As the motor is designed for traction applications, the characteristics of the developed torque and speed were investigated under different gearing levels using magnetic gearing technique, the efficiency shows improvements in comparison to the basic motor.

A new kind of intelligence optimization algorithm - bees algorithm (BA) is introduced, which is developed in recent years and is easy to realize, extremely quickly to convergence. Using the algorithm, the article solves optimal regulation of hydropower stations with time-varying price. Actual example proves the validity and fast astringency of BA. Thus, an additional method is proposed for solving optimal regulation of cascade hydropower stations.

In patients' healthcare, manual planning of operating rooms is very difficult due to having a large number of constraints that the planner should take into consideration. The aim of this paper is to solve the operating room scheduling problem using a hybrid bees algorithm. Our focus is to solve a two-level variant of the problem, the Master Surgery Scheduling Problem and the Surgical Case Assignment Problem, where both hospital cost and patient cost are considered. We use a hybrid population based meta-heuristic, namely, a Hybrid BA with Simulated Annealing. The performance of our algorithm is compared against a Tabu Search single solution based method from the literature using the same test data. The experimental results demonstrate the advantages of using our proposed approach.

Identifying defects and classifying them according to some predefined classes is common in many manufacturing processes. The basis of such approach depends on a set of features extracted from all the classes and using them to train a classifier and then use it to determine the class to which the unseen data belongs to, with a reasonable accuracy. Hence the performance of the classifier depends on the features' ability to discriminate between the good or normal and the defects. Therefore, one way of improving the classifier is to select the most appropriate features from a given feature set for the purpose of training and testing so that, at the end, better results can be achieved overall. In this paper, a novel wrapper-based feature selection approach using bees algorithm for the application of wood defect classification is presented. bees algorithm is a swarm-based optimisation technique mimicking the foraging behaviour of honey bees found in nature. In order to demonstrate the wrapper-based feature selection procedure a Minimum Distance Classifier (MDC) is used in this study. However, the method can be applied to any application using some other classifier. The study shows that, on average, a 10% improvement is achieved when a reduced sub-set of 12 features selected using the proposed wrapper-based method with bees algorithm is used in training and testing the MDC when compared to using the original full set of 17 features. The rejected features correspond to outliers.

This paper describes an application of the bees algorithm with new operators inspired by the TRIZ methodology to optimise assembly sequences for a printed-circuit board (PCB) assembly machine. The specific problem investigated is the assembly of PCBs using a machine of the moving-board-with-time-delay type. The results obtained using the bees algorithm with the TRIZ-inspired operators are found to be better than those by other algorithms from the literature including the original bees algorithm.

Non-destructive testing methods have gained popularity as they become more widely available. Although there are several techniques that could be used for this purpose, this paper focuses on acoustic emission sensors for detecting surface fractures and the use of the bees algorithm, a swarm-based technique, for optimizing the number of sensors required to reliably detect surface fractures. The paper describes the approach that has been used in this study where the dimension of the surface is specified by the user. The results show that, in theory and through simulation, that the bees algorithm is capable of determining the minimum number of sensors needed to locate the surface fracture with an acceptable level of accuracy. The method described could be used for the purpose of optimization in other engineering as well as nonengineering applications. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Intelligent technologies have become increasingly important in manufacturing nowadays. Optimal service management and allocation in current cloud manufacturing model are impossible without applications of appropriate intelligent tools. The bees algorithm (BA) is a swarm-based intelligent optimizer that provides support for smart decision-making process in manufacturing models. A novel forager adjustment strategy (FAS) is proposed in this paper to manage the forager division in the algorithm, so as to make the entire colony perform with higher efficiency. The proposed FAS based bees algorithm (FAS-BA) is able to realize flexible allocation of its forager resources between different roles in accordance with the solution fitness sampled by current scout population. The proposed algorithm is presented in detail. Experiments are conducted based on a set of well-known benchmark functions and a case study. Comparisons between FAS-BA and an improved bees algorithm are made to highlight the effectiveness of FAS. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm requires less function evaluation cost than the improved version but is capable of obtaining at least the same optimal solution to a problem.

The Scatter Search is one of the population-based metaheuristics, which can be used to solve a wide range of problems including Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), Routing Protocol, and End-to-End QoS, while bees algorithm can be applied to optimize the solution of these problems. In this paper, an improved Scatter Search algorithm based on bees algorithm has been presented. The improvement provides Scatter Search with random exploration for search space of problem and more of intensification for promising solutions. The original and improved Scatter Search has been tested on Traveling Salesman Problem. A computational experiment with benchmark instances is reported. The results demonstrate that the improved Scatter Search algorithm produces better performance than original Scatter Search algorithm. The developed algorithm has been compared with other algorithms for the same problem, and the result was competitive with some algorithm and insufficient with another.
