Analyzing service behavior is useful activity for monitoring and comparing cloud services. modeling behavior of a cloud service is required by various cloud providers and researchers to analyze the usage pattern of service. This can be used to identify failure rate, success rate, and shortcomings of a service. It can also be used to formulate new business strategies and overcome the pitfalls. We are analyzing the behavior of a cloud service to determine the various parameters. These parameters are then can be used to provide trust value, in terms of strength of a cloud service. Also a provider can make use of this to identify the improvement areas for the cloud service and application.

In this paper we address the problem of modeling the evolution of clusters over time by applying sequential clustering. We propose a sequential partitioning algorithm that can be applied for grouping distinct snapshots of streaming data so that a clustering model is built on each data snapshot. The algorithm is initialized by a clustering solution built on available historical data. Then a new clustering solution is generated on each data snapshot by applying a partitioning algorithm seeded with the centroids of the clustering model obtained at the previous time interval. At each step the algorithm also conducts model adapting operations in order to reflect the evolution in the clustering structure. In that way, it enables to deal with both incremental and dynamic aspects of modeling evolving behavior problems. In addition, the proposed approach is able to trace back evolution through the detection of clusters' transitions, such as splits and merges. We have illustrated and initially evaluated our ideas on household electricity consumption data. The results have shown that the proposed sequential clustering algorithm is robust to modeling evolving behavior by being enable to mine changes and update the model, respectively.

Occupant behavior has significant impacts on building energy performance and occupant comfort. However, occupant behavior is not well understood and is often oversimplified in the building life cycle, due to its stochastic, diverse, complex, and interdisciplinary nature. The use of simplified methods or tools to quantify the impacts of occupant behavior in building performance simulations significantly contributes to performance gaps between simulated models and actual building energy consumption. Therefore, it is crucial to understand occupant behavior in a comprehensive way, integrating qualitative approaches and data- and model-driven quantitative approaches, and employing appropriate tools to guide the design and operation of low-energy residential and commercial buildings that integrate technological and human dimensions. This paper presents ten questions, highlighting some of the most important issues regarding concepts, applications, and methodologies in occupant behavior research. The proposed questions and answers aim to provide insights into occupant behavior for current and future researchers, designers, and policy makers, and most importantly, to inspire innovative research and applications to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy use in buildings. Measuring Communication Participation to Initiate Conversation in Human-Robot Interaction

Consider a situation where a robot initiates a conversation with a person. What is the appropriate timing for such an action? Where is a good position from which to make the initial greeting? In this study, we analyze human interactions and establish a model for a natural way of initiating conversation. Our model mainly involves the participation state and spatial formation. When a person prepares to participate in a conversation and a particular spatial formation occurs, he/she feels that he/she is participating in the conversation;once he/she perceives his/her participation, he/she maintains particular spatial formations. Theories have addressed human communication related to these concepts, but they have only covered situations after people start to talk. In this research, we created a participation state model for measuring communication participation and provided a clear set of guidelines for how to structure a robot's behavior to start and maintain a conversation based on the model. Our model precisely describes the constraints and expected behaviors for the phase of initiating conversation. We implemented our proposed model in a humanoid robot and conducted both a system evaluation and a user evaluation in a shop scenario experiment. It was shown that good recognition accuracy of interaction state in a conversation was achieved with our proposed model, and the robot implemented with our proposed model was evaluated as best in terms of appropriateness of behaviors and interaction efficiency compared with other two alternative conditions.

Using latent variable models to make gaming-the-system detection robust to context variations

Gaming the system, a behavior in which learners exploit a system's properties to make progress while avoiding learning, has frequently been shown to be associated with lower learning. However, when we applied a previously validated gaming detector across conditions in experiments with an algebra tutor, the detected gaming was not associated with reduced learning, challenging its validity in our study context. Our exploratory data analysis suggested that varying contextual factors across and within conditions contributed to this lack of association. We present a new approach, latent variable-based gaming detection (LV-GD), that controls for contextual factors and more robustly estimates student-level latent gaming tendencies. In LV-GD, a student is estimated as having a high gaming tendency if the student is detected to game more than the expected level of the population given the context. LV-GD applies a statistical model on top of an existing action-level gaming detector developed based on a typical human labeling process, without additional labeling effort. Across three datasets, we find that LV-GD consistently outperformed the original detector in validity measured by association between gaming and learning as well as reliability. LV-GD also afforded high practical utility: it more accurately revealed intervention effects on gaming, revealed a correlation between gaming and perceived competence in math and helped understand productive detected gaming behaviors. Our approach is not only useful for others wanting a cost-effective way to adapt a gaming detector to their context but is also generally applicable in creating robust behavioral measures.

Defining information required by automatic test systems frequently involves a description of system behavior. To facilitate capturing the required behavior information in the context of testing, a formal model of behavior was developed for use by test systems. The approach taken in defining the behavior model was based on information modeling and was derived from recent work in formal methods by the hardware and software design communities. Specifically, an information model was developed in EXPRESS capturing the relationships between essential entities characterizing behavior. In this paper, we provide a high level description of the behavior information model and several examples applying the model in a test environment.

POD Preprocessing of IR Thermal Data to Assess Heat Source Distributions

Infrared thermography is a useful imaging technique for analyzing the thermomechanical behaviour of materials. It allows, under certain conditions, surface temperature monitoring and, via a diffusion model, estimation of heat sources induced by dissipative and/or thermally coupled deformation mechanisms. However, the noisy and discrete character of thermal data, the regularizing effect of heat diffusion and heat exchanges with the surroundings complicate the passage from temperature to heat source. The aim of this paper is to show that the prior use of reduced-basis projection of thermal data improves the signal-to-noise ratio before estimating the heat source distributions. The reduced basis is generated by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of physically-admissible thermal fields. These fields are solutions of ideal diffusion problems related to a set of putative heat sources. preprocessing is applied to different direct methods (finite differences, spectral solution, local least-squares fitting) already used in the past. The gain of this preprocessing is determined using a numerical penalizing benchmark test. The methods are finally compared using data extracted from a dynamic cyclic test on a pure copper specimen.

Measuring the effect of a program of waste separation at source in Da Nang City, Vietnam

This study focused on the waste separation behavior of households in areas with a waste separation at source (WSS) program to understand the effect of the program and identify suggestions for improving the participation rate. A questionnaire survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 402 households in Da Nang City, Vietnam. To measure the effect of the WSS program on waste separation behavior, the authors conducted a comparison between waste separation behavior before and after implementing the program. The authors developed a model of waste separation behavior to clarify the factors. The differences in participation rates and influencing factors as they related to respondents' level of involvement in the WSS program were also examined by Chi-squared test and ANOVA. The participation rate before the WSS program was 70.0% for plastic bottles, 70.1% for cardboard, and 71.4% for aluminum cans. After the WSS program, these rates significantly increased by 14.2% for plastic bottles, 12.6% for cardboard, and 12.3% for aluminum cans. Through behavior modeling, the factors influencing waste separation behavior were clarified. The attendance of respondents at an explanatory meeting and the recognition of the leaflets would positively promote the participation rate and the factors influencing waste separation behavior.

Integrating Programming Learning Analytics Across Physical and Digital Space

In this work, we study students' learning effectiveness through their use of a homegrown innovative educational technology, Web Programming Grading Assistant (WPGA), which facilitates grading and feedback delivery of paper-based assessments. We designed a lab study and a classroom study from a lower-division blended-instruction computer science course. We evaluated a partial credit assignment algorithm. We tracked and modeled students' learning behaviors through their use of WPGA. Results showed that students demonstrated an effort and desire to review assessments regardless of if they were graded for academic performance or for attendance. Diligent students achieved higher exam scores on average and were found to review their exams and the correct questions frequently. Additionally, student cohorts exhibited similar initial reviewing patterns, but different in-depth reviewing and reflecting strategies. Ultimately, the work contributes to multidimensional learning analytics aggregation across the physical and cybersphere.

A systematic review of agent-based modeling and simulation applications for analyzing pro-environmental behaviors

Understanding people's pro -environmental behavior (PEB) is central to environmental public policy effectiveness. The use of agent -based modeling and simulation (ABMS) to explore these behaviors is increasing in diverse research fields. This paper provides a systematic mapping study to analyze how ABMS has been applied to analyze PEBs. Fifty-six articles published between 2009 and 2021 from different knowledge areas are examined, reviewing each model for similarities and particularities. ABMS is a potential tool for simulating future scenarios to comprehend PEBs, especially in situations that cannot be empirically measured. The studies were investigated considering the behavioral theories, ABMS platform or computer language, simulation characteristics and features, computational model code transparency, and validation employed. Most reviewed studies focused on electric energy consumption or technologies to reduce future demand. However, other subjects, such as waste prevention, consumption, eating habits, and water use, still need to be explored. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) and social norms were the most prevalent behavioral theory and behavioral influence bases to simulate individuals. Still, many other behavioral assumptions are being implemented. Future research should analyze understudied PEBs using ABMS to support the simulation of more realistic scenarios in developing and underdeveloped countries. The conclusion shows the need for more detailed criteria descriptions to understand and replicate these models and how ethics can be an important feature for future ABMS experiments.
