Ant weight-lifting algorithm for motion estimation

Every video coding standard includes and requires motion estimation and compensation. The full search algorithm, which provides the best motion estimation, has a very high computation cost. Researchers have developed several algorithms to reduce the cost of computation. However, most of these algorithms become trapped in local minima during the search. Population-based evolutionary algorithms are widely used to develop a computationally efficient and cost-effective motion estimation strategy. The most recent effort used the Jaya algorithm to develop a motion estimation process that outperformed the state-of-the-art test zone search algorithm. In this study, a motion estimation algorithm based on the ant weight-lifting approach is proposed. Previously, the ant weight-lifting algorithm was used to solve a variety of problems, such as image segmentation, signal compression, and so on. The ant weight-lifting algorithm's computation cost was reduced by adopting a fitness estimation method that uses nearest-neighbor interpolation and an early termination strategy. Compared to Jaya algorithm-based motion estimation, the proposed algorithm executes up to 3% more quickly and exhibits up to 1.2 dB less distortion. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Multimedia is key technology for today's handheld devices. Interactive messages, video chat, video conferencing are quickly replacing traditional way of communication which has become possible because of effective video processing methods that enable high compression. Variety of devices are used from high end computers to low end phones to serve the purpose. Specifically gadgets with low computational power, wants to achieve reasonable good quality video with little cost of computation which can be accomplish by proficient video coding. Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation are tools for video compression, in which motion information of the current block is predicted from adjacent blocks using Sum of Absolute Difference as cost function. Whole process is extremely computation rigorous and demands reduction in amount of computation with clause of sustaining visual quality, to make it suitable for end devices with low computation supremacy. In this paper statistical analysis of motion information is made which is used to diminish amount of computation in existing diamond search (DS) method.

The modern era of digital communication heavily relied on video for information, communication, and education. Videos are becoming an integral part of the digital world. The tremendous use of videos leads to the production of a high amount of data sometimes referred to as Big Data. So to process this much data with limited resources is impossible if videos are not compressed properly and efficiently. The heart of video compression is the process that predicts the movement of an object from one frame to another by using different block matching algorithms and is called motion estimation. Many block matching algorithms were reported to carry out the motion estimation to date but none of the research work considered the direction of movement of Macro blocks i.e. objects while applying any algorithm. The proposed work titled Predictive Rood Pattern Search (PRPS), here will first identify the direction of movement of the object and apply the best suitable algorithms out of the existing but best among the reported works which consider the correlation between the current macroblock and the neighboring macroblock. The obtained results show the efficiency of the new algorithms over the other algorithms while providing the option of selecting the proper algorithm based on direction.

Current video coding standards like H.264 vertical bar AVC perform a block-based motion estimation and compensation at the encoder to exploit temporal dependencies between consecutive frames. Current research proved that motion compensation can also be done profitably at the decoder. In this so-called decoder-side motion estimation (DSME), frames are interpolated at the decoder and inserted into the reference buffer as additional information for prediction. To gather the motion information for compensation, the current approach is based on a block matching algorithm estimating one motion vector for each block of the frame to be interpolated. Therefore, only translational movement is compensated. We evaluate the applicability of a mesh-based motion compensation to DSME which models affine motion in each patch of the mesh and is able to compensate camera zooming or panning, object rotation, or object deformation.

We propose probabilistic method to determine motion vector (MV) for block matching algorithm (BMA). Proposed method allow us to exploit random distribution of motion vector in successive video frames for selection of initial search points for first iteration and refinement stage used in further iteration tracks motion vector in continuously changing video sequence. In our proposed algorithm due to adaptive step size it is able to track motion vectors of low motion as well as high motion video. The Simulation result shows that our proposed algorithm Probability based search motion estimation (PBSME) outperforms all sub-optimal motion estimation (ME) algorithms in terms of quality and speed up performance and in many cases PSNR of proposed algorithm is comparable to Full Search with several times faster.

Due to their multiresolution signal decomposition, wavelet analysis has shown great success in the analysis of signals such as image processing and video coding. The recent progress in 3D spatio-temporal wavelet video coding led to the emergence of a new generation of scalable video schemes. In fact, much attention has been given to t+2D analysis where temporal redundancy is first exploited through a motion compensated multiresolution decomposition and the resulting temporal subband frames are then spatially decomposed with a wavelet transform. This paper presents a high-level implementation of a video coding chain based on MCTF temporal filtering and spatial block processing. In order to evaluate the overall system performance, a comparative study was conducted to choose the adequate block-matching algorithm during the temporal filtering steps. Evaluation of the quality of the reconstructed frames based on the compression ratio was done with spatial analysis based on 5/3 and 9/7 wavelet. Simulation results show that the proposed video coding has a notable performance in terms of compression ratio and quality, also some advantages provided by the choice of the temporal-filtering equation allow to reduce the computational complexity and reduce the amount of memory occupied during the video encoding/decoding process compared to classical temporal 5/3-MCTF filtering.

Hexagonal block search algorithms considerably improve the execution speed of motion estimation over previously developed fast search algorithms. These algorithms focus on improvement of either coarse search or inner search. Proposed Enhanced Directional Hexagonal Search (EDHS) algorithm improves both the searches with respect to number of search points. This algorithm reduces the number of search points by exploiting the distortion information in the neighboring search points. Directionality obtained in coarse search helps reduce inner search points. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm substantially outperforms previously developed hexagonal search algorithms in terms of number of search points with slight improvement in the Peak Signal-to-Noise ratio. In the context of motion estimation (ME) for video coding, the rate-constrained successive elimination algorithm (RC-SEA) safely eliminates candidate motion vectors while preserving the optimal candidate chosen by the block matching algorithm (BMA). This paper describes a technique for reusing ME information from rectangular to square prediction units in order to reduce the search area without altering the optimal candidate chosen by the BMA. Our experiments show that, on average, when this optimization is combined with the RCSEA in the HEVC HM encoder reference software, the number of sum of the absolute differences (SAD) operations drops by 94.9%, resulting in a speedup of 6.13x in full search mode. Although identical coding decisions cannot be guaranteed when multiple optimal solutions exist, the average impact on BD-PSNR is 0.0002 dB.

Increasing frame rates by temporal frame interpolation is one of the main challenge in modern video processing. Recent studies on frame interpolation mainly focused on getting true motion vectors, but along with that assigning motion vectors accurately is also an important issue. In this paper we have proposed a new Cubic Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation algorithm which generates a frame by properly assigning motion vectors. In conventional motion compensated frame interpolation algorithm two consecutive frames are considered for motion estimation to get motion vectors. In this paper, use of cubic interpolation technique have been done, which considers four successive frames through which three different motion vectors are calculated. For evaluation average Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and average Structural Similarity (SSIM) are taken into consideration to compare the proposed algorithm with the conventional algorithm. It is found that proposed algorithm outperforms over conventional motion compensated frame interpolation algorithm. From numerical value it can be observed that the proposed algorithm has achieved around 3dB improvement in terms of average PSNR and an increase of around 5% of average SSIM. Simulation results demonstrate performance compared to existing algorithm on different video sequences with various frame size.

This paper proposes a new fast adaptive motion estimation algorithm based on H.264. It utilizes the statistics of video sequence and the correlations of SADs in the space to early terminate the search, determines the search pattern according to the block's local motion activity, and proposes a new synthetic diamond search pattern. Compared to fast full search, the PSNR is just 0.017db lower and bitrates is 0.45% higher while the speed is 15 times up.
