Global motion estimation (GME) plays an important role in many video application systems such as video coding system MPEG-4. However, its computational complexity is very high. Fast algorithms are needed. In this paper, we propose an improvement to the GME algorithm. We achieve this by introduce two techniques. Firstly, integral projection algorithm (IPA) is used to get first translation estimation and reduce block matching algorithm (BMA) search range. Secondly, coarsely block sampling technology directly reduces the computation complexity. GME composite performance experiments prove that our GME method only degrades -0.13dB in PSNR compared with the MPEG-4 verification model (VM), while it gets a 5.93ms per frame speed and is 73.3 times faster than the VM. Global motion compensation (GMC) coding experiments also show no loss of GME accuracy and compression efficiency compared to the MPEG-4 VM GME method.

The watermarking technique is an active subject in current research used as a solution for copyright protection in multimedia documents. In this paper, we propose the first hardware invisible robust video watermarking application based on motion estimation. Since the designers of this application face many challenges, two types of architecture are performed: static and dynamic/partial reconfigurable architecture. The proposed architecture is adapted to HEVC encoded video. Two protection techniques are linked up: the digital watermarking to insert a watermark in the video, and the scrambling technique for overall video protection. The watermark embedding is treated in the horizontal and vertical components of even motion vectors. Eventually, the entire vectors are scrambled. The used watermark is a binary sequence where only one bit is inserted into the horizontal and the vertical components of motion vectors. The recommended architecture applies for slow and fast video sequence, where we use a motion estimator reconfigured according to the macro-block video movement. We also utilize a pipeline structure and a clock gating module to increase computing power and reduce power consumption. Experimental results show that the suggested static and dynamic/partial reconfigurable architecture guarantees material efficiency and superior performance in terms of frequency and power consumption.

An efficient search strategy for block motion estimation using image features

block motion estimation using the exhaustive full search is computationally intensive, Fast search algorithms offered in the past tend to reduce the amount of computation by limiting the number of locations to be searched. Nearly all of these algorithms rely on this assumption: the MAD distortion function increases monotonically as the search location moves away from the global minimum. Essentially, this assumption requires that the MAD error surface be unimodal over the search window Unfortunately, this is usually not true in real-world video signals. However, we can reasonably assume that it is monotonic in a small neighborhood around the global minimum, Consequently, one simple strategy, but perhaps the most efficient and reliable, is to place the checking point as close as possible to the global minimum. In this paper, some image features are suggested to locate the initial search points. Such a guided scheme is based on the location of certain feature points. After applying a feature detecting process to each frame to extract a set of feature points as matching primitives, we have extensively studied the statistical behavior of these matching primitives, and found that they are highly correlated with the MAD error surface of real-world motion vectors. These correlation characteristics are extremely useful for fast search algorithms. The results are robust and the implementation could be very efficient. A beautiful point of our approach is that the proposed search algorithm can work together with other block motion estimation algorithms. Results of our experiment on applying the present approach to the block-based gradient descent search algorithm (BBGDS), the diamond search algorithm (DS) and our previously proposed edge-oriented block motion estimation show that the proposed search strategy is able to strengthen these searching algorithms. A Fast and Adaptive Search algorithm Based on Rood Pattern and Gradient Descent

In order to achieve the real-time property for video coding, a fast and adaptive algorithm based on starting search point prediction and early-termination strategy is proposed. It analyzes center-bias property and spatial correlation property of motion vector field, and utilizes the respective characteristics of block based gradient descent search (BBGDS) and adaptive rood pattern search (ARPS) algorithm. The proposed algorithm adaptively chooses different searching strategies according to the type of the image, makes full use of the cross image motion vector distribution characteristics and optimizes the traditional ARPS algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is about 2.3∼9.2 times faster than Diamond Search (DS), 1.2∼4.0 times than ARPS. The algorithm can meet the real-time demand without reducing the image quality.

Face recognition, a kind of biometric identification, researched in several fields such as computer vision, image processing, and pattern recognition is a natural and direct biometric method. Face Recognition Technology has diverse potential over applications in the fields of information security, law enforcement and surveillance, smart cards, access control and more. Face recognition is one of the diverse techniques used for identifying an individual. Generally the image variations because of the change in face identity are less than the variations among the images of the same face under different illumination and viewing angle. Illumination and pose are the two major challenges, among the several factors that influence face recognition. After pose and illumination, the main factors that affect the face recognition performance are occlusion and expression. So in order to overcome these issues, we proposed an efficient face recognition system based on partial occlusion and expression. The similar blocks in the face image are identified and occlusion can be recovered using the block matching technique. This is combined with expression normalized by calculating the Empherical Mode Decomposition feature. Finally, the face can be recognized by using the PCA. From the implementation result, it is evident that our proposed method based on the PCA technique recognizes the face images effectively.

A MULTILEVEL DISTORTION MEASURE FOR block BASED MOTION ESTIMATION USING INTEGRAL FRAMES

Motion estimation is used to remove interpixel redundancy in video data and block based motion estimation algorithms are widely used for it. Computation in these algorithms is reduced by limiting the number of candidate search points within the search window or simplifying the distortion measurement criterion. In literature, there are integral frame based block motion estimation algorithms which drastically reduce computation cost. However, these algorithms have a serious drawback of spurious block matching possibility, leading to poor quality results. In this manuscript, a multilevel block matching criterion based on integral frame concept is proposed to minimize this drawback. Experimental results show that an increase up to 12% in terms of PSNR (dB) has been achieved than integral frame based sum of absolute difference block sum criterion (SAD_BS) with almost same execution time. Further, in terms of quality/computation ratio, proposed method has 25-26% gain over SAD BS.

In this paper, the motion estimation and compensation of interframe background, the restoration of complete background image, the detection of moving objects and the optimization of detection results of dynamic sequence images are studied. It is innovatively proposed to use the combination of variance, edge information and histogram that characterizes statistical characteristics as the appropriate characteristic to match blocks, and then use the block matching method to realize motion estimation and compensation of background. This algorithm has proven that it can effectively and quickly realize motion estimation and compensation of background between dynamic sequence images by experiments. Then the traditional background subtraction and three-frame difference method can be used to recover the whole background and detect moving target. However, the problem of target cavity and background residues appears in the target detection results. In this paper, the second threshold method of difference results, the background real-time update method and the subarea multi-threshold method are proposed. The experimental results show that the three schemes can effectively solve the problem of target void and background residue in the detection results. And they are also applicable in the situation where the gray level of the target is similar to the background, which can clearly extract the target submerged in the background, and extend the application scope of traditional background subtraction.

In the context of motion estimation (ME) for video coding, the rate-constrained successive elimination algorithm (RC-SEA) safely eliminates candidate motion vectors while preserving the optimal candidate chosen by the block matching algorithm (BMA). This paper describes a technique for reusing ME information from rectangular to square prediction units in order to reduce the search area without altering the optimal candidate chosen by the BMA. Our experiments show that, on average, when this optimization is combined with the RCSEA in the HEVC HM encoder reference software, the number of sum of the absolute differences (SAD) operations drops by 94.9%, resulting in a speedup of 6.13x in full search mode. Although identical coding decisions cannot be guaranteed when multiple optimal solutions exist, the average impact on BD-PSNR is 0.0002 dB.
