block truncation coding (BTC) is a recent technique used in the coding of image data. In the letter a modified technique for BTC coding of image data is presented which is algorithmically simple and hence easy to implement. This new technique uses only the first-order statistical information as ‘block overhead’. The new algorithm is shown to be optimum in the mean-square sense for a particular class of BTC algorithms. The letter presents the results of using the new algorithm for a typical image and compares the performance with that of the earlier algorithm for the same image.

A hybrid block truncation coding (BTC) is presented in this work. In the hybrid ETC, a universal codebook using Ramming codes and a differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) are employed, respectively, to the bit plane and the side information of ETC to reduce coding rate. Simulation results reveal that the performance of the proposed algorithm is only slightly worse than that of the hybrid ETC using vector quantization (VQ) techniques, but with much lower computational or hardware complexity.

Satellite/aerial images taken from high altitude contain large amount of pixels to store accurate information. These high resolution images require large storage capacity and more transmission time. Applying an efficient compression technique on these images can reduce high storage capacity requirement and transmission time. In this paper block truncation coding (BTC) based color image compression technique for aerial/satellite images is proposed. High degree of correlation among the RGB planes of a color image can be reduced by converting these planes into HSV planes. Each of the H and S planes are encoded using BTC with quad clustering and V plane is encoded with BTC based bi-clustering or tri-clustering depending on the edge information present in the plane. The effectivity of the proposed method is validated by comparing it with the conventional BTC and its variant methods. Experimental analysis indicate that the proposed method is superior to other state of the art methods both in terms of visual quality and quantitative metrics.

In order to provide secure retrieval for encrypted digital images in cloud-based system, a secure searchable image encryption algorithm based on block truncation coding (BTC) and Henon chaotic map is presented. Henon Chaotic map is used to encrypt two quantization levels of BTC compressed images, and a pseudo random sequence is created by chaotic map to scramble the bit plane of each sub-block. The feature value of each sub-block is computed according to the relationship between the number of 1s and 0s in the corresponding bit plane. The encrypted image retrieval can be achieved by comparing the normalized correlation coefficients between the feature vectors. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme has satisfactory retrieval accuracy and security. Meanwhile, it has low computational cost and can be used for encrypted images retrieval in the cloud.

block truncation coding (BTC) is a fast image compression technique applied in spatial domain. Traditional BTC and its variants mainly focus on reducing computational complexity for low bit rate compression, at the cost of lower quality of decoded images, especially for images with rich texture. To solve this problem, in this paper, a quadtree-based block truncation coding algorithm combined with adaptive bit plane transmission is proposed. First, the direction of edge in each block is detected using Sobel operator. For the block with minimal size, adaptive bit plane is utilized to optimize the BTC, which depends on its MSE loss encoded by absolute moment block truncation coding (AMBTC). Extensive experimental results show that our method gains 0.85 dB PSNR on average compare to some other state-of-the-art BTC variants. So it is desirable for real time image compression applications.

In-network data compression is achieved in a wireless sensor network using block truncation coding technique. This provides data compression and the consequent energy saving. In block truncation coding, binarization and fixing of quantization levels are the two major steps. By shifting the binarization pre-processing to the sensor nodes, in-network compression is realized.

In this paper, a reversible data hiding method aims at block truncation coding compressed color images is proposed, which can reconstruct the original compressed image effectively after extracting the embedded secret data. In order to improve the compression quality, a mean absolute deviation based clustering is applied to find an approximate optimal common bitmap. The common bitmap is used to get the quantization levels of each block in each color channel. The secret data are then embedded in the quantization levels of each block by the histogram shifting method and quantization level patterns based method. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing reversible data hiding methods for BTC-compressed color images in terms of hiding capacity and visual quality.

block truncation coding (BTC) is an effective lossy image coding technique that enjoys both high efficiency and low complexity especially when halftoning techniques are employed to shape the noise spectrum of its output. However, due to its block-based nature, blocking artifacts are commonly found in the coding outputs. Post-processing schemes are generally applied to soften the problem. Recently, a halftoning-based BTC algorithm was proposed to solve this problem by eliminating the cause of blocking artifacts. In this paper, through an optimization step, the performance of the algorithm is optimized in terms of a given objective measure. The idea can be adopted to work with other halftoning methods to optimize other measures for suiting different needs in different circumstances.

In this paper, we proposed a bit-rate adjustable color image compression technique based on block truncation coding. To exploit the similarity among the neighboring pixels, the quadtree segmentation technique is used to divide the color image into variable-sized blocks based on their block activities. Different rules are used to encode the image blocks of different sizes. Experimental results reveal that good image qualities of the reconstructed color images can be achieved by the proposed technique while keeping low bit rates.

In this paper, a hybrid block truncation coding (HBTC) is presented for color image compression. In the HBTC algorithm to improve the compression ratio of the basic BTC, only luminance bit-map is employed to represent the edge information of the coding block. Moreover, ail efficient previous proposed algorithm, adaptive quantization coding, (AQC), is used to compress the two representative levels further. Simulation results show that the proposed HBTC performs as well as the BTC in terms Of Subject Visual quality, and significantly improves the compression ratio of BTC from 2.88:1 to 6.00:1 with the limited performance losing about 0.66dB in PSNR.
