A new system is developed for the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. It is developed with the help of slit lamp biomicroscopic retinal images. The results are compared with digital fundus image using image processing techniques. The slit lamp, offering users both space savings and cost advantages. By using slit lamp biomicroscopic equipment with an ordinary camera, users can reduce the cost more than 30 times compared to digital fundus camera. The fundus examination was performed on human volunteers with a hand held contact or non-contact lens (90D). The lens providing an extremely wide field of view and better image resolution. The slit lamp equipment is used to examine, treat (with a laser), and photograph (with a camera) of the retina. A digital camera is permitted to capture the image and store this image by using slit lamp, each photograph have small potion of the entire retinal image. The individual slit lamp biomicroscopic fundus images are aligned and blended with block matching algorithm to develop an entire retinal image same as the fundus camera image and detect optic disk, blood vessel ratio from the images. This image can be used for the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy.

Motion estimation (ME) consumes a majority of computation capacity of DSP in video compression application. A modified DSP architecture to accelerate ME algorithms is presented in this paper. The proposed SIMD and VLIW architecture is a trade-off between ASIC implementation and DSP implementation of ME, which can perform subtract, absolute and add (SAA) operation on 8 pixels and fetch 8 new pixels from memory at the same time. Flexible align addressing mode is provided to support efficient and continuous SAA operation on video stream. The DSP is estimated 20 times faster than SISD architecture to perform ME algorithms.

The methods and designs described here are qualified for medical imaging area where are involved larger images. Communication between one individual and another can be delivered in different ways, not only through speech, writing and body motions. Communication can also be delivered through basic emotions one feels through visible facial expressions. Facial expressions displayed in the forms of emotional expressions can be demonstrated briefly or quickly, which is known as micro-expression. The subtle motion of micro facial expression in every exchange makes many people find it difficult to identify and recognize the ongoing emotion. Therefore, this study proposes the recognition of micro-expression emotions with estimated subtle motion in the image sequence based on onset-frame, apex-frame, and offset-frame for feature extraction. The method used for feature extraction are the combination of block matching algorithm with Taylor Series Approximation referred to as Subpixel Subtle Motion Estimation (SME). Multiclass Classification process using Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) Backpropagation and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a comparison. The evaluation results show the best accuracy 85.07%, with the Mean Absolute Error 0.0597 and Root Mean Square Error 0.2443.

A new programmable and parallel video signal processor (PVSP) is proposed to implement a class of fast block matching algorithms (BMA). Five parameters are used to embody the various fast BMAs and a generic framework for the fast BMA is designed. Then PVSP is designed and the BMA algorithms are mapped onto it. The key modules of PVSP are discussed in details. PVSP uses horizontal and vertical mapping strategies to implement byte-aligned and circular addressing. Under these two mapping strategies the memory system of PVSP can be configured flexibly. The regular, iterative and low-delay tree adder without any pipeline stages is chosen as the key computation component to implement the BMA. With scalable tree adder, PVSP can be easily expanded to meet higher computing requirement. PVSP is estimated to have approximately 30kGates and 40kb SRAM and it can work at the frequency of 133MHz. It can support the motion estimation and motion compensation tasks in real-time for MPEG2 MP@ML encoder.

In this paper, an efficient algorithm for the fast full search is proposed to reduce the computational cost of block matching algorithm for motion estimation in video coding. Based on the characteristic of the pixel histogram for the current macroblock, the proposed fast matching method adaptively sorts the matching order pixel-by-pixel for each macroblock. Also, partial distortion elimination (PDE) method was used to terminate the improper candidate macroblocks early after the process of multilevel successive elimination algorithm (MSEA). The varieties of test sequences were simulated and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves less computational load.

This paper presents the region of interest in disparity mapping for stereo vision autonomous guided vehicle using block matching algorithm. This region is a reference sight of the stereo camera and tereo vision baseline is based on horizontal configuration. The blockmatching technique is briefly described with the performance of its output. The disparity mapping is generated by the algorithm with the reference to the left image coordinate.
