Extraction of left-ventricular torsion angle from the long-axis view by block-matching algorithm: Comparison with the short-axis view

Introduction: Due to limitations in measuring the torsion angle in the short-axis view when studying through-plane motion and so it is dependent on reference levels, in this study, we follow myocardial movement along the long-axis of the left ventricle (LV). Then, LV torsion is estimated in the long-axis view and compared with LV torsion in the short-axis view. Materials and methods: Two dimensional echocardiographic images of healthy persons were recorded in cine loop format position throughout four cardiac cycles at basal and apical levels in the long-and short-axis views. The motion vectors for reign of interest in the horizontal and vertical directions were obtained by block matching algorithm. Correlation between the values of automated analysis and manual tracing was performed by Pearson correlation analysis. Then, the maximum rotation angles of the short-and long-axis views at basal and apical levels were assessed. Left-ventricular torsion angles in short-axis and long-axis views were calculated and compared based on rotation angles. Results: There was a high correlation between the measured myocardial wall displacement of automated analysis (BM algorithm) and manual tracing (R = 0.96, p < 0.05). The maximum rotation angles of basal and apical levels in the short-axis view are 7.96 +/- 1.57 degrees and 9.49 +/- 1.72 degrees and so in the long-axis view are 18.51 +/- 3.41 degrees and 14.74 +/- 2.91 degrees, respectively. The LV torsion angles and the time to reach peak LV torsion angles in the short-axis views are 17.26 +/- 2.53 degrees, 293 +/- 26 ms and in the long-axis view are 32.26 +/- 5.60 degrees and 290 +/- 22 ms respectively. There was a high correlation between the left-ventricular torsion angle in the short-axis view and the long-axis view (R = 0.92, p < 0.05). There was also a high correlation between the time to reach peak left-ventricular torsion angle in the short-axis view as compared to the long-axis view (R = 0.97, p < 0.05). Conclusion: This

A new block-matching algorithm for fast motion estimation is proposed. The so-called Star Diamond Search with Adaptive Threshold(SDth)is two steps algorithm. Adaptive threshold for matching errors eliminates invalid blocks early from motion estimation procedure. Then it performs a search for final motion vector with a Star Diamond algorithm. Proposed SD(th)algorithm has been implemented and tested using several video sequences. SD(th)algorithm is also compared with previous search methods to demonstrate its utility.

block based motion estimation is usually used to reduce the computational complexity while preserving a good quality of the images used in real-time video coding. A new block matching motion estimation algorithm called star diamond search is proposed in this paper. This one proceeds in two stages: the first one consists in carrying out a search having star shape. This one aims a coarse search for the solution, the second phase consists in refining the search for the solution. A comparative study with the most known methods is given showing the interest of the proposed algorithm.

An efficient algorithm is proposed to reduce the computation cost of block matching algorithms for motion estimation in video coding. Based on a new insight in block matching algorithms, we extend the successive elimination algorithm to a multilevel case. By using the sum norms of the blocks and the subblocks, tighter and tighter decision boundaries can be obtained for eliminating the search positions. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm combined with full search algorithm and several fast search algorithms is verified by simulation results.

Most of the fast search motion estimation algorithms reduce the computational cost of motion estimation greatly by checking only a few search points inside the search area by using full distortion measure. This paper proposes a multi-layer motion estimation which employs partial distortion as its distortion measure to reduce the number of computations involved in each search point instead of reducing the number of search points. A layer is an image which is derived from the reference frame such that the sum of a block of pixels in the reference frame determines the point of a layer. It has been noticed on different video sequences that many motion vectors on the layers are the same as those searched on the reference frame. Experimental results on a wide variety of video sequences show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other popular conventional fast search motion estimation algorithms computationally while maintaining the motion prediction quality very close to the full-search algorithm.

In this paper, we propose a fast adaptive diamond search algorithm(FADS) for block matching motion estimation. Many fast motion estimation algorithms reduce the computational complexity by the UESA(Unimodal Error Surface Assumption) where the matching error monotonically increases as the search moves away from the global minimum point. Recently, many fast BMAs(block matching algorithms) make use of the fact that the global minimum points in real world video sequences are centered at the position of zero motion. But these BMAs, especially in large motion, are easily trapped into the local minima and result in poor matching accuracy. So, we propose a new motion estimation algorithm using the spatial correlation among the neighboring blocks. We move the search origin according to the motion vectors of the spatially neighboring blocks and their MAEs(Mean Absolute Errors). The computer simulation shows that the proposed algorithm has almost the same computational complexity with DS(Diamond Search)(1,2), but enhances PSNR. Moreover, the proposed algorithm gives almost the same PSNR as that of FS(Full Search), even for the large motion with half the computational load.

The most computationally expensive operation in entire video compression process is Motion Estimation. The challenge is to reduce the computational complexity and time of Exhaustive Search algorithm without losing too much quality at the output. In recent years, video compression has emerged as an effective technique to reduce spatial and temporal redundancy in video sequence. Temporal redundancy reduction deals with motion estimation (ME) and motion compensation (MC) algorithm with the matching technique to produce the next encoded video frame with motion vector. Motion estimation is the process of determining the movement of blocks between adjacent video frames by which image information is assessed for similarities that can be reused in subsequent frames. However, computational complexity and resource sharing of the motion estimation algorithm poses great challenges for real time applications. Fast search algorithms emerged as important search technique to achieve real time tracking results. Among the different motion estimation algorithms block matching is the most common used technique. This paper presents a system-level implementation of a wavelet-based t+2D video coding. Three block matching motion estimation algorithms are implemented in order to evaluate the overall system performance. In fact, since the chip design and layout process is time consuming and expensive, it is very important to be able to predict the overall system performance in a high-level implementation before its circuit layout is deployed. The aim is to discuss the impact of different block matching motion estimation algorithms on video coding performance. Because of the complexity of the entire motion estimation system, decision in choosing one algorithm versus the other algorithms is often empirical and crucial.

Motion estimation plays an important role in real-time video coding because it can improve compression efficiency greatly block matching algorithms are popular in motion estimation. The full search algorithm is the most obvious and simplistic block matching algorithm, but its high computational cost limits its practical use. Many fast algorithms are constantly proposed. Fast algorithms can greatly reduce the computation by only searching selected positions in the search window. In this paper, several block matching algorithms (including FS, TSS, TDL, and CS) are introduced and compared by compute simulation. Experiment results show that the full search algorithm provides high compression with low distortion, but it costs much time;fast algorithms reduce the computational time significantly while suffer performance loss;the three-step search algorithm is the most practicably algorithm in the fast algorithms.
