The monitoring of trees and vegetation near high voltage transmission power lines is a tedious job for electrical companies. There are many blackouts occur due to interfering the trees with the power transmission lines in hilly as well as urban areas. This is a big challenge for power distribution companies to monitor the vegetation for avoiding the blackouts and flashovers. To solve these problems, there are many methods are used to monitor the trees and vegetation near transmission power poles. But the existing methods are expensive and time consuming. We proposed the new method based on satellite images to monitor the trees and vegetation. The satellite images provide the cost effective solution to solve the monitoring problem. In this paper, we proposed the stereo matching algorithms to measure the disparity map based on satellite stereo imagery. The height estimation of trees and vegetation near power poles based on depth map which is inversely proportional of the disparity map. For measuring the depth map, the dynamic programming (DP) and block matching with energy minimization has been proposed. These techniques are applied on the satellite stereo images and based on results, our proposed DP algorithm produced more accurate disparity map as compared to the block matching algorithm.

In this paper, we present a motion compensated frame rate up-conversion method for real-time three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound fetal image enhancement. The conventional mechanical scan method with one-dimensional (I-D) array converters used for 3-D volume data acquisition has a slow frame rate of multi-planar images. This drawback is not an issue for stationary objects, however in ultrasound images showing a fetus of more than about 25 weeks, we perceive abrupt changes due to fast motions. To compensate for this defect, we propose the frame rate up-conversion method by which new interpolated frames are inserted between two input frames, giving smooth renditions to human eyes. More natural motions can be obtained by frame rate up-conversion. In the proposed algorithm, we employ forward motion estimation (ME), in which motion vectors (MVs) are estimated using a block matching algorithm (BMA). To smooth MVs over neighboring blocks, vector median filtering is performed. Using these smoothed MVs, interpolated frames are reconstructed by motion compensation (MC). The undesirable blocking artifacts due to blockwise processing are reduced by block boundary filtering using a Gaussian low pass filter (LPF). The proposed method can be used in computer aided diagnosis (CAD), where more natural 3-D ultrasound images are displayed in real-time. Simulation results with several real test sequences show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this work the hardware-friendly Enhanced Spread and Iterative Search (ES&IS) motion estimation (ME) algorithm is presented and evaluated for the High Efficiency Video Coding Standard (HEVC). The ES&IS is divided in two steps: a central evaluation and a spread evaluation with a refinement. The ES&IS was compared with Enhanced Predictive Zonal Search (EPZS) using the HEVC reference software. Software evaluations showed that, in average, the ES&IS presents a 1.07% increase in bitrate and 0.05% decrease in PSNR when compared to EPZS. However, the main advantage of the ES&IS is its hardware-friendly aspect.

This paper proposes a two-step block matching algorithm for motion estimation. To reduce the algorithmic complexity, the unsupervised Bayesian classifier with resampling bootstrap Gaussian expectation of maximization algorithm serves to detect the static and dynamic blocks, and the bloc matching algorithm with star diamond pattern is used to search final position of dynamic blocks. A comparative study with other algorithms has shown the proposed method can achieve faster computation with good PSNR values. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this paper, we propose a novel, efficient and fast motion estimation (ME) algorithm for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The proposed work is based on video content that gives us the provision to select a best macro block mode and suitable search pattern for a given slice of the video frame. Each frame is divided into multiple slices based on a tiered scene labelling mechanism and a suitable search pattern is estimated for each slice by investigating texture of the slice. The inter space distance between a macro block in current frame to the candidate macro block in the previous frame is calculated for all the macro blocks in a slice, to find the block movement factor (BMF) which identifies a appropriate search pattern for that slice. Also, the disparity between the neighbouring blocks is measured for each slice to predict the mode to be considered for block matching in next frame. The experimental analysis is performed with x265 video codec, which shows considerable amount (20%) of improvement in compression performance.

This paper presents a rotational motion estimation and correction technique for digital image stabilization. An equivalent rotation model is derived so as to accommodate a combined rotational and the translational motion. Based on this model, the rotation center and angle are estimated, and followed by the motion compensation. The suggested estimation algorithm does not require the time consuming parameter searching, while showing a comparable performance to the previous ones.

Recently established international video coding standard H.264/AVC and the upcoming standard on scalable video coding (SVC) bring part of the solution to high compression ratio requirement and heterogeneity requirement. However, these algorithms have unbearable complexities for real-time encoding. Therefore, there is an important challenge to reduce encoding complexity, preferably in a scalable manner. Motion estimation and motion compensation techniques provide significant coding gain but are the most time-intensive parts in an encoder system. They present tremendous research challenges to design a flexible, rate-distortion optimized, yet computationally efficient encoder, especially for various applications. In this paper, we present a scalable motion estimation framework for complexity-distortion consideration. We propose a new progressive initial search (PIS) method to generate an accurate initial search point, followed by a fast search method, which can greatly benefit from the tighter bounds of the PIS. Such approach offers not only significant speedup but also an optimal distortion performance for a given complexity constrain. We analyze the relationship between computational complexity and distortion (C-D) through probabilistic distance measure extending from the complexity and distortion theory. A configurable complexity quantization parameter (Q) is introduced. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scalable complexity-distortion framework enables video encoder to conveniently adjust its complexity while providing best possible services.

In this paper, a computation-efficient implementation of the flexible triangle (FTS) search algorithm is presented. The FTS is a fast block-matching algorithm for motion estimation proposed in previous work. The FTS is used for block-based motion estimation where it can locate the best matching blocks between two frames using a search triangle of flexible size and orientation. This flexibility provide the triangle with the high efficiency to locate the best matching block in fewer number of search iterations. Further analyses of the FTS performance indicates that more computation efficiency can be achieved in loading the search area and the computing the matching criterion between two macroblocks. Adjacent search areas are overlapped and consequently, the loading mechanism can be modified to load only the non-overlapped sections In addition, loading of search area and other data can start earlier parallel with the algorithm initialization. Finally, the computed SAD results can be stored and then later used instead of re-computing them again. The proposed implementation in this paper reduces the average number of cycles required to finish one macroblock search by around 26% and thus enable the video encoder to support higher frequencies or larger resolutions. The proposed technique was implemented in FPGA as part of the flexible triangle search (FTS) motion estimation algorithm.. The proposed design was implemented, simulated, and tested using VHDL and synthesized using Xilinx ISE for the Xilinx Spartan3 device. The results obtained were compared to an FPGA implementation of the FTS algorithm published in previous work.

The estimation of cloud motion from a sequence of satellite images can be considered a challenging task due to the complexity of phenomena implied. Being a non-rigid motion and implying non-linear events, most motion models are not suitable and new algorithms have to be developed. We propose a novel technique, combining a block matching algorithm (BMA) and a best candidate block search along with a vector median regularisation.

In this paper, we proposed a novel Two-layer Motion Estimation(TME) which searches motion vectors on two layers with partial distortion measures in order to reduce the overwhelming computational complexity of Motion Estimation(ME) in video coding. A layer is an image which is derived from the reference frame such that the sum of a block of pixels in the reference frame determines the point of a layer. It has been noticed on different video sequences that many motion vectors on the layers are the same as those searched on the reference frame. The proposed TME performs a coarse search on the first layer to identify the small region in which the best candidate block is likely to be positioned and then perform local refined search on the next layer to pick the best candidate block in the located small area. The key feature of TME is its flexibility of mixing with any fast search algorithm. Experimental results on a wide variety of video sequences show that the proposed algorithm has achieved both fast speed and good motion prediction quality when compared to well known as well as the state-of-the-art fast block matching algorithms.
