Multiple images embedding scheme based on moment preserving block truncation coding

A low-complexity grayscale image embedding scheme that can embed multiple secret images is proposed in this paper. In this scheme, different users can extract different secret images according to the secret keys they hold. To reduce the storage cost of the secret images, each of the secret images is first compressed using an improved version of the moment preserving block truncation coding scheme. The compressed message of each secret image is then encrypted by the DES cryptography system with different secret key and then embedded into the host image using the modulus least-significant-bit substitution technique. According to the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed scheme consumes a little computational cost. Besides, different users can extract different number of secret images. In other words, the proposed scheme indeed provides a good approach for the hiding of grayscale images with access control.

Hybrid image compression methods based on vector quantization and block truncation coding

Vector quantization (VQ) and block truncation coding (BTC) are two popular schemes for image compression. VQ has been widely used for its simplicity and low bit rate;on the other hand, BTC has the advantages of requiring little computational cost and providing high image quality. To put together the advantages of VQ and ETC, three hybrid methods based on VQ and ETC are proposed in this paper. According to our experimental results, it is shown that the first two methods of ours produce good image quality while keeping low bit rate. Meanwhile, the third method produces higher image quality while keeping acceptable bit rate. Also, these methods require little computational cost. block truncation coding is one of the simplest encoding methods which require insignificant computing cost to compress images. Due to the vast demand on embedding data into compressed images with low computing cost, a number of data hiding methods to improve block truncation coding have been proposed to be suitable for the low power devices such as IoT devices, field-programmable gate array, and portable image signal processor. In this paper, block truncation coding based data hiding methods will be discussed and analyzed on two key metrics - data hiding capacity and image quality - as many researchers are focusing to increase the image quality along with data hiding capacity. Here, our aim is to provide guidance to interested researchers for their future works in the field of block truncation coding based data hiding techniques. Finally, future directions of research with some suggestions will be discussed.

A self-recovery watermarking scheme based on block truncation coding and quantum chaos map

To take into account the invisibility, recovery quality, detection ability, and security, a new digital image fragile watermarking method based on block truncation coding (BTC) and quantum chaos map is proposed. In this method generates the authentication watermark for each 4x4 block and generates the recovery watermark for each 2x2 block by block truncation coding. For each block, the block truncation coding is used to classify the image blocks into smooth blocks and rough blocks. For different blocks, recovery data can be generated by allocating fewer bits to the smooth blocks and more bits to the rough blocks to encoding the block content. Quantum chaos map is used to generate the block mapping sequence for embedding recovery watermark to improve the shortcoming of watermarking such as small keyspace and low security. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves the quality of watermarked and recovered images. Additionally, this approach achieves higher security than the existing methods, under different attacks, such as general tampering, collage attack, content-only, and a hybrid attack.

An efficient grayscale image coding scheme based on block truncation coding (BTC) is proposed. The optimal pixel grouping mechanism and the multi-grouping division process are employed in the proposed scheme. An entropy-based indicator generation mechanism is employed to generate the block indicators of different groups. In addition, an optional bit rate reduction mechanism for dynamic block division is designed. Simulation results verify that significant image quality gain is acquired by the proposed scheme compared to the state-of-art image coding methods based on BTC. Meanwhile, a lower bit rate is consumed by the proposed scheme.

Color image compression based on block truncation coding using pattern fitting principle

This paper describes a color image compression technique based on block truncation coding using pattern fitting (BTC-PF). High degree of correlation between the RGB planes of a color image is reduced by transforming them to O1O2O3 planes. Each O-i plane (1 <= i <= 3) is then encoded using BTC-PF method. Size of the pattern book and the block size are selected based on the information content of the corresponding plane. The result of the proposed method is compared with that of several BTC based methods and the former is found superior. Though this method is a spatial domain technique, it is also compared with JPEG compression method, which is one of most popular frequency domain techniques. It is found that the performance of the proposed method is a little inferior to that of the JPEG in terms of quality of the reconstructed image. Decoding time is another important criterion where the compressed image is decoded frequently for various purposes. As the proposed method requires negligible decoding time compared to JPEG, the former is preferred over the latter in those cases. (c) 2007 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Ltd. block truncation coding (BTC) image compression technique is capable of extraordinary computational efficiency for high-framerate configurations under the trend of high image resolution. However, the recent development such as the Dot-Diffused BTC (DDBTC) method still encounters various challenges of visual artifacts, including impulsive noise, false contours and blocking effects. In this study, a new method, the Near-Aperiodic DDBTC (NADDBTC) technique, is proposed to analyze the tradeoff and balance between computational efficiency and visual artifacts. It is mainly because of the quantization levels and the co-optimized Class Matrix (CM) and Diffused Matrix (DM) during image compression procedure. In addition, the tiling method for bitmap generation is optimized for aperiodic compressed results. Experimental results show that this method is capable of excellent image quality and visual perception, as well as processing efficiency, at a level similar to the DDBTC technique by taking advantage of parallel processing in dot diffusion. block truncation coding (BTC) technique is a simple and fast image compression algorithm since complicated transforms are not used. The principle used in BTC algorithm is to use two-level quantiser that adapts to local properties of the image while preserving the first- or first- and second-order statistical moments. The parameters transmitter or stored in the BTC algorithm are statistical moments and bitplane yielding good quality images at a bitrate of 2 bits per pixel (bpp). In this paper, two algorithms for modified BTC (MBTC) are proposed for reducing the bitrate below 2 bpp. The principal used in the proposed algorithms is to use the ratio of moments which is a smaller value when compared to absolute moments. The ratio values are then entropy coded. The bitplane is also coded to remove the correlation among the bits. The proposed algorithms are compared with MBTC and the algorithms obtained by combining JPEG standard with MBTC in terms of bitrate, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and subjective quality. It is found that the reconstructed images obtained using the proposed algorithms yield better results.

Embedding intensity image in grid-cross down-sampling (GCD) binary holograms based on block truncation coding

Past research has demonstrated that a three-dimensional (3D) intensity image can be preserved to a reasonable extent with a binary Fresnel hologram called the grid-cross down-sampling (GCD) binary hologram, if the intensity image is first down-sampled with a grid-cross lattice prior to the generation of the hologram. It has also been shown that the binary hologram generated with such means can be embedded with a binary image without causing observable artifact on the reconstructed image. Hence, the method can be further extended to embed an intensity image by binarizing it with error diffusion. Despite the favorable findings, the visual quality of the retrieved embedded intensity image from the hologram is rather poor. In this paper, we propose a method to overcome this problem. First, we employ the block truncation coding (BTC) to convert the intensity image into a binary bit stream. Next, the binary bit stream is embedded into the GCD binary hologram. The embedded image can be recovered with a BTC decoder, as well as a noise suppression scheme if the hologram is partially damaged. Experimental results demonstrate that with our proposed method, the visual quality of the embedded intensity image is superior to that of the existing approach, and the extracted image preserves favorably even if the binary hologram is damaged and contaminated with noise. A fast near-optimum block truncation coding method using a truncated K-means algorithm and inter-block correlation

block truncation coding (BTC) is an efficient image compression method which finds application in diverse fields. The basic problem can be viewed as a two-level quantization process. However, efficient ways for optimal threshold determination have not been discovered so far. We propose a fast BTC algorithm based on a truncated K-means algorithm, utilizing the image inter-block correlation and the fact that K-means algorithm converges very fast in this case. This produces near-optimum solution with significantly improved speed over other methods. Simulation results confirm such advantages. (C) 2010 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
