This paper discusses the possibility of improving eye-hand coordination in children diagnosed with this problem, using a robotic mapping from a haptic user interface to a virtual environment. The goal is to develop, implement and refine a system that will assess and improve the eye-hand coordination and grip strength in children diagnosed with having problems with it. A detailed analysis of patters (e.g., labyrinths, letters and angles) was conducted which would yield the greatest benefit in terms of assessment of coordination and strength issues as well as in training. Support algorithms (position, force, velocity, inertia and viscosity) were also developed and incorporated into the tasks to assist the user's movements. The evaluate performance (given by % accuracy and time) of the executed tasks;a sophisticated evaluation function was designed based on image analysis and edge detection algorithms. A Fuzzy Logic-based function that takes the accuracy and time results and makes a suggestion in the next task to be performed is also described in this paper. This paper also presents the results of a study implemented at the Motor Development Clinic at Cal Poly Pomona. The purpose of this study was to test the functionality of the haptic tasks, evaluation function and Fuzzy Logic-based decision making algorithm.

The goal of segmentation is to represent an image more easily & meaningfully. Edge detection method used is an important property of extracting image characteristics in image segmentation, identification and analysis. In this paper we proposed a new algorithm called SUSAN edge detection algorithm which improves the performance of the traditional test edge detection operators and has good segmentation accuracy. Pre-processing techniques are also applied to obtain better results. The proposed algorithm first filters the noisy images and enhances the contrast of the image by AIVHE method. Here we have studied the effect of the three different histogram equalization methods namely the traditional HE, CLAHE and AIVHE for certain performance parameters on medical retinal images. Susan edge detection gives better performance in presence of noise and provides good edge, connectivity, better localization and no false edges compare to other derivative based operators.

Edge Drawing (ED) is an edge detection method that works by computing a set of anchor points, which are most likely to be edge elements, and linking them with a predefined set of rules which we call smart routing. ED can thus obtain one-pixel wide, contiguous and smooth edges in real-time. In most cases, obtaining the edges in segment form (i.e. blob of connected edgels) is desired. Because edge segments also include the connectivity information among the pixels, they contain useful features about the geometric shape of the detected edges. In contrast to conventional detectors, ED is able to output the resulting edge map as vectorial data, i.e., array of edge segments instead of a 2D binary image. In this work, this capability of ED is explained and discussed with examples.

An agglomerative clustering algorithm merges the most similar pair of clusters at every iteration. The function that evaluates similarity is traditionally hand-designed, but there has been recent interest in supervised or semisupervised settings in which ground-truth clustered data is available for training. Here we show how to train a similarity function by regarding it as the action-value function of a reinforcement learning problem. We apply this general method to segment images by clustering superpixels, an application that we call Learning to Agglomerate Superpixel Hierarchies (LASH). When applied to a challenging dataset of brain images from serial electron microscopy, LASH dramatically improved segmentation accuracy when clustering supervoxels generated by state of the boundary detection algorithms. The naive strategy of directly training only supervoxel sim- ilarities and applying single linkage clustering produced less improvement.

Fine-scale sea surface temperature fronts in wintertime in the northern South China Sea

This study presents finer structures and inter-seasonal evolutions of sea surface temperature (SST) fronts in wintertime in the northern South China Sea (SCS) by applying an entropy-based edge detection method to 7-year (2001-2007) satellite-derived SST images with a grid size of 1km. From monthly mean maps of SST front, six significant SST fronts were defined in the northern SCS. This study not only reveals the earlier defined frontal bands, but also provides finer structures and gradient variability of the fronts. One front alongside Luzon Island (the Philippines), which was undetected by a gradient-based method in previous studies, is well defined by the entropy-based method used in the present study. This result suggests that the gradient-based method might not be appropriate for front detection in coastal waters or marginal seas, but using SST data of lower spatial resolution SST data might not be suitable to describe the detailed structure of short or small fronts through the sophisticated edge detection methods.

In this paper, we presented an image segmentation algorithm based on adaptive weighted mathematical morphology edge detectors. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated on the Lena image. The input of the proposed algorithm is a grey level image. The image was first processed by the mathematical morphological closing and dilation residue edge detector to enhance the edge features and sketch out the contour of the image, respectively. Then the adaptive weight SE operation was applied to the edge-extracted image to fuse edge gaps and hill up holds. Experimental results show it can not only primely extract detail edge, but also superbly preserve integer effect comparative to classical edge detection algorithm.

This paper presents an iris detection and marking method based on Haar features from images of figures. We firstly apply Haar-features detection algorithm and Canny edge detection algorithm, to the image, then scan and extend the contours in particular areas to get an initial U-Curves marking iris contours, and then carries on sample expanding and noise reduction to get optimized sample points. At last, the iris contour with optimized sample points is fitted to an ellipse using least squares method, thus get the iris position. Experimental results show that our approach U-Curves improve the accuracy of iris detection and marking.

Autonomous extraction of optimal flame fronts in OH planar laser-induced fluorescence images

The location of a flame front is often taken as the point of maximum OH gradient. Planar laser-induced fluorescence of OH can be used to obtain the flame front by extracting the points of maximum gradient. This operation is typically performed using an edge detection algorithm. The choice of operating parameters a priori poses significant problems of robustness when handling images with a range of signal-to-noise ratios. A statistical method of parameter selection originating in the image processing literature is detailed, and its merit for this application is demonstrated. A reduced search space method is proposed to decrease computational cost and render the technique viable for large data sets. This gives nearly identical output to the full method. These methods demonstrate substantial decreases in data rejection compared to the use of a priori parameters. These methods are viable for any application where maximum gradient contours must be accurately extracted from images of species or temperature, even at very low signal-to-noise ratios. Peak and leading edge detection for time-of-arrival estimation in band-limited positioning systems

The performance of the peak and leading edge detection methods for time-of-arrival (TOA) estimation in band-limited systems is examined. Analytical expressions for the detection performance in the presence of both random noise and multipath interference are derived. A dimensionless performance factor is presented that allows simple comparisons of the TOA estimation algorithms. These equations allow the performance tradeoff analysis to be undertaken without the need for simulations. It is shown that the leading edge detection method has significantly better multipath mitigation characteristics than the peak detection one, but at the expense of inferior noise performance.

Many researchers are looking to take their work from a simulation environment and implement it on an embedded DSP platform. This is primarily driven by the need to demonstrate that the research is viable commercially. This paper will provide an overview of the different types of hardware and software development platforms that are available. It will then provide a summary of the software design techniques that are required to maximise the efficiency of code on current embedded DSP platforms. These will be demonstrated using an implementation of a Canny Edge detection algorithm on a DM6437 Evaluation Module.
