New methods for clinical pathways-business process modeling notation (BPMN) and Tangible business process modeling (***)

Clinical pathways (CP) are nowadays used in numerous institutions, but their real impact is still a matter of debate. The optimal design of a clinical pathway remains unclear and is mainly determined by the expectations of the individual institution. The purpose of the here described pilot project was the development of two CP (colon and rectum carcinoma) according to business process modeling notation (BPMN) and Tangible business process modeling (***). BPMN is an established standard for business process modelling in industry and economy. It is, in the broadest sense, a computer programme which enables the description and a relatively easy graphical imaging of complex processes. *** is a modular construction system of the BPMN symbols which enables the creation of an outline or raw model, e.g. by placing the symbols on a spread-out paper sheet. The thus created outline can then be transferred to the computer and further modified as required. CP for the treatment of colon and rectal cancer have been developed with support of an external IT coach. The pathway was developed in an interdisciplinary and interprofessional manner (55 man-days over 15 working days). During this time, necessary interviews with medical, nursing and administrative staffs were conducted as well. Both pathways were developed parallel. Subsequent analysis was focussed on feasibility, expenditure, clarity and suitability for daily clinical practice. The familiarization with BPMN was relatively quick and intuitive. The use of *** enabled the pragmatic, effective and results-directed creation of outlines for the CP. The development of both CP was finished from the diagnostic evaluation to the adjuvant/neoadjuvant therapy and rehabilitation phase. The integration of checklists, guidelines and important medical or other documents is easily accomplished. In an enterprise, Information Systems (IS) are developed to support the business processes (BPs). A business process supporting information system is an important asset to define customer's needs and consist of set of activities to produce result of value to the customers. business process modeling is often confused with software modeling. business processes modeling carried out using Event-driven process Chain (EPC), business process Execution Language (BPEL) or business process modeling notation (BPMN) etc. facilitates the understanding, analyzing and improving business processes but on the other hand, their models are too coarse to be used by software engineers. The advent of Unified modeling Languages (UML) standardized by Object Management Group (OMG) has opened the door for business process modeling. In this paper, a UML profile is proposed to ease business process modeling i.e. BPMN so that software engineers can use business process models in familiar notations. As a result, UML model will be close to software engineer without being forced to master their peculiarities for understanding BPMN or to relate it with software requirements. A real-world insurance claim process case study is modeled using UMLPBPMN to show its applicability. Furthermore, obtained UML model can be verified using any formal language such as Petri-nets, timed automata etc. by applying model transformation.

Complex Event processing - the identification of event patterns in event streams, the analysis of their impact, and the execution of corresponding actions - is gaining momentum within various research disciplines and business areas. However, one of the major problems associated with Complex Event processing is its lack of usability, especially the complexity of its management, preventing its wide diffusion and adoption by users. This usability issue is addressed in this paper by applying business process modeling notation as graphical support for the definition of complex event patterns.

During the years of prosperity, numerous organizations neglected numerous aspects of risk management. As systematic approach to handling identified risks is crucial to achieving success by the organization, modern business modeling standards and techniques are supposed to take risk-related features into account. The article is devoted to elaborating and exemplifying an extension aimed at risk handling for OMG's business process modeling notation (BPMN), one of the most prospective standards for business process modeling. After an introduction, key risk management concepts are discussed. Section 3 discusses extensions introduced within BPMN meta-model, while section 4 exemplifies proposed concepts. The article is concluded with a summary.

Interaction-centric modeling of process choreographies

With the rise of electronic integration between organizations, the need for a precise specification of interaction behavior increases. Information systems, replacing interaction previously carried out by humans via phone, faxes and emails, require a precise specification for handling all possible situations. Such interaction behavior is described in process choreographies. While many proposals for choreography languages have already been made, most of them fall into the category of interconnection models, where the observable behavior of the different partners is described and then related via message flow. As this article will show, this modeling approach fails to support fundamental design principles of choreographies and typically leads to modeling errors. This motivates an alternative modeling style, namely interaction modeling, for overcoming these limitations. While the main concepts are independent of a concrete modeling language, iBPMN is introduced as novel interaction modeling language. Formal execution semantics are provided and a comprehensive toolset implementing the approach is presented. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The emergency plan of the urban rail transit (URT) system is a guiding document for dealing with emergencies and formulating emergency plans. However, the emergency plan text described in natural language has some problems, such as poor visibility and enforceability. Effective help is difficult to provide for the rapid implementation of emergency response. Therefore, obtaining key emergency task information from the emergency response plan and visualizing the emergency disposal workflow are the main challenges. In this article, we propose a method of extracting emergency elements (EELs) from emergency plans and constructing a business process model. First, a nested entity extraction model incorporating adversarial training is proposed to extract EELs from the complex sentences in the emergency plan text. Second, the EELs are combined into emergency task units, and then the relations between emergency task units are identified to form the emergency task sequence flow, which is stored in matrix form. Finally, the emergency disposal workflow model is generated based on the emergency task sequence flow and the BPMN modeling method. Taking the actual emergency plan text as an example, the process from the extraction of EELs to the construction of the disposal workflow model is demonstrated. Experimental results prove that this method has advantages in comprehensively extracting EELs, visualizing the emergency disposal workflow, and improving the enforceability of emergency plans.

Automatic Extraction of Emergency Response process Models From Chinese Plans

Emergency plans can be regarded as the effective guidance of hazard emergency responses, and they include the textual descriptions of emergency response processes in terms of natural language. In this paper, we propose an approach to automatically extract emergency response process models from Chinese emergency plans. First, the emergency plan is represented as a text tree according to its layout markups and sentence-sequential relations. Then, process model elements, including four-level response condition formulas, executive roles, response tasks, and flow relations, are identified by rule-based approaches. Finally, an emergency response process tree is generated from both the text tree and extracted process model elements, and is transformed to an emergency response process that is modeled as business process modeling notation. Extensive experiments on real-world emergency plans demonstrate that the proposed approach is capable of extracting emergency response process models that are highly consistent with both the manually extracted models and the textual plans.

Design and implementation of an advanced telemedicine model for the rural people of Bangladesh

OBJECTIVES: Telemedicine based healthcare service faces different difficulties especially in the remote people of Bangladesh. The objective of this study was to implement an advanced telemedicine model in order to provide the healthcare services for the rural people of Bangladesh. METHODS: We developed the telemedicine model using an ardunio based low cost portable telemedicine tool kit by interfacing android application. Then we collected ECG, blood pressure, temperature, concentration of glucose in blood, SPO2, body position, airflow, height and weight through our developed model. Moreover, we designed a server for storing the recorded signal from the patients in order to treat them by health care professionals. Finally, this model is successfully tested with the patients of Marie Stopes Bangladesh Hospital Dhaka. RESULTS: We have removed noise from the recorded signal successfully through our developed hardware and software based techniques. Real time data were visualized to the expert doctor in order to prescribe them through our model. CONCLUSIONS: These results support that rural patient vital information can be collected in an automated way through the advanced model. Both rural and urban doctors can share and exchange patient information more effectively for the treatment of patient. The results of this research indicated that our developed telemedicine system can be used effectively in order to deliver healthcare services for the rural people of Bangladesh.

businesses and software development processes alike are being challenged by the digital transformation and agility trend. business processes are increasingly being automated yet are also expected to be agile. Current business process modeling is typically labor-intensive and results in rigid process models. For larger processes it becomes arduous to consider all possible process variations and enactment circumstances. Contemporaneously, in software development microservices have become a popular software architectural style for partitioning business logic into fine-grained services accessible via lightweight protocols which can be rapidly and individually developed by small teams and flexibly (re) deployed. This results in an increasing number of available services and a much more dynamic IT service landscape. Thus, a more dynamic form of modeling, integration, and orchestration of these microservices with business processes is needed. This paper describes agile business process modeling with Microflows, an automatic lightweight declarative approach for the workflow-centric orchestration of semantically-annotated microservices using agent-based clients, graph-based methods, and the lightweight semantic vocabularies JSON-LD and Hydra. A graphical modeling tool supports Microflow modeling and provides dynamic constraint and microservice recommendations via a recommender service using machine learning of domain-categorized Microflows. To be able to utilize existing process model knowledge, a case study shows how Microflow constraints can be automatically extracted from existing business process modeling notation (BPMN) process files and transformed into flexible Microflow constraints, which can then be used to train the recommendation service. Further, it describes process mining of Microflow execution logs to automatically extract BPMN models and automated recovery for errors occurring during enactment.

Over the last few years, NoSQL systems are gaining strong popularity and a number of decision makers are using it to implement their warehouses. Building the ETL process is one of the important tasks of creating NoSQL warehouse. Traditional ETL tools require the structure of the target system to be known at advance. As NoSQL databases are schema-free, this increases the need for extending the existing ETL tool in order to be able to designing schema while integrating data. In spite of the importance of ETL processes in the NoSQL warehousing, little researches have been done in this area due to its complexity. In this paper, we propose an ETL-based platform for transforming a multidimensional conceptual model into document-oriented one. We model the transformation rules using the business process modeling notation (BPMN). The resulting warehouse was evaluated in term of "Write Request Latency" and "Read Request Latency" using TPC-DS benchmark.
