A rat model of chronic tympanic membrane perforation was developed to be used in the search of new materials for the sealing of these perforations. A longitudinal study was carried out in rats subjected to incisional myr-ingotomy followed by the application of mitomycin c alone or with dexamethasone. Rats were checked at days 3, 7,1 0,1 4 and weekly thereafter until perforation closure, for up to 6 months. The addition of dexamethasone is a key component in order to obtain a chronic opening. Myringotomies treated w ith saline had a mean healing time of 8.5 days. At 8 weeks, between 62.5% and 77.7% of tympanic membranes treated w ith mitomycin c and dexamethasone remained perforated and at 6 months this number fell to 21.4%. This technique is able to maintain most tympanic membrane perforations patent for at least 8 weeks. This rat model is adequate for its use in preclinical or translational research.

Historically, Fortran and c have been the default programming languages in High-Performance computing (HPc). In both, programmers have primitives and functions available that allow manipulating system memory and interacting directly with the underlying hardware, resulting in efficient code in both response times and resource use. On the other hand, it is a real challenge to generate code that is maintainable and scalable over time in these types of languages. In 2010, Rust emerged as a new programming language designed for concurrent and secure applications, which adopts features of procedural, object-oriented and functional languages. Among its design principles, Rust is aimed at matching c in terms of efficiency, but with increased code security and productivity. This paper presents a comparative study between c and Rust in terms of performance and programming effort, selecting as a case study the simulation of N computational bodies (N-Body), a popular problem in the HPc community. Based on the experimental work, it was possible to establish that Rust is a language that reduces programming effort while maintaining acceptable performance levels, meaning that it is a possible alternative to c for HPc.

BackgroundHepatoblastoma is a rare malignancy originating from pluripotent stem cells with unknown etiology. An understanding of the etiology in pediatric hepatoblastoma has been hampered by the unavailability of sufficient patient samples. To date, only a few epidemiological studies with small sample sizes have been performed investigating risk factors for hepatoblastoma. TP53 and pri-miR-34b/c genes are implicated in the tumorigenesis, yet the role of their polymorphisms in hepatoblastoma susceptibility remains unknown. MethodsWe conducted a seven-center case-control study to explore the genetic variants predisposing to hepatoblastoma susceptibility. In our study, we genotyped two functional polymorphisms, the TP53 rs1042522 c>G (Arg72Pro) and miR-34b/c rs4938723 T>c, in 313 cases and 1446 controls using the TaqMan method. ResultsSingle loci analysis showed that neither TP53 rs1042522 c>G, nor miR-34b/c rs4938723 T>c significantly modified hepatoblastoma risk. In the stratification analysis, we identified that the miR-34b/c rs4938723 Tc/cc genotypes were associated with a decreased risk in patients with clinical stages III + IV hepatoblastoma (adjusted odds ratio = 0.53, 95% confidence interval = 0.33-0.84, P=0.007] compared to the rs4938723 TT genotype. Subsequent analysis further showed that the combination of TP53 and miR-34b/c variant genotypes had no impact on susceptibility hepatoblastoma. conclusionsTaken together, TP53 rs1042522 c>G and miR-34b/c rs4938723 T>c may not confer hepatoblastoma susceptibility. These findings may aid in our understanding of the genetic etiology of hepatoblastoma.

The increasing demand for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based chemicals has driven research towards the utilization of renewable feedstock, such as lignocellulosic biomass (LcB), to produce high-value products. Among LcB-derived platform molecules, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has become a key building block for bio-based monomers such as 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDcA), among many others. This study reports the successful synthesis of various Pt-Bi catalysts supported on activated carbon (c) and investigates their role in the HMF conversion to FDcA. The catalytic performance of the Pt-Bi/c catalysts was evaluated in batch reactors, using HMF in an aqueous reaction medium, with 1 M of Na2cO3 to provide alkalinity, and under 10 bar of O2. These results demonstrated a strong correlation between catalyst properties and their catalytic activity. Among the prepared catalysts, the 9Pt3Bi/c catalyst was the most efficient one, achieving a yield to FDcA of 99.7 %. Further investigations revealed that the 9Pt-3Bi/c catalyst maintained its excellent performance even under reduced reaction times, lower temperatures, and reduced catalyst loadings, demonstrating its potential for practical applications. Across all reactions, it was observed that, under the tested reactions conditions, the existence of side reactions involving HMF degradation to other compounds was significant. This underscores the challenge of achieving quantitative HMF conversion to FDcA, enhancing the importance of catalyst properties and reaction conditions optimization to minimize by-product formation.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous disease. Recently introduced new subclassifications promise more efficacious, tailored treatments which could complement current guidelines. In the differentiation of the new diabetes subphenotypes, assessment of insulin secretion is one of the essential components. Based on a large number of insulin secretion measurements, we propose fasting c-peptide/glucose ratio (cGR) as an adequate and practicable estimate of insulin secretion. cGR discriminates insulin deficiency from insulin hypersecretion. We suggest using insulin secretion, determined from cGR, as an essential input for therapeutic decisions at the beginning or modification of diabetes treatment. Furthermore, we propose 3 practical steps to guide decisions in the subtype-specific therapy of diabetes mellitus. The first step consists of detecting insulin deficiency indicated by a low cGR with the need for immediate insulin therapy. The second step is related to high cGR and aims at lowering cardiovascular risk associated with diabetes. The third step is the consideration of a de-escalation of glucose-lowering therapy in individuals with mild diabetes subphenotypes.

Rangelands provide significant environmental benefits through many ecosystem services, which may include soil organic carbon (SOc) sequestration. However, quantifying SOc stocks and monitoring carbon (c) fluxes in rangelands are challenging due to the considerable spatial and temporal variability tied to rangeland c dynamics as well as limited data availability. We developed the Rangeland carbon Tracking and Management (RcTM) system to track long-term changes in SOc and ecosystem c fluxes by leveraging remote sensing inputs and environmental variable data sets with algorithms representing terrestrial c-cycle processes. Bayesian calibration was conducted using quality-controlled c flux data sets obtained from 61 Ameriflux and NEON flux tower sites from Western and Midwestern US rangelands to parameterize the model according to dominant vegetation classes (perennial and/or annual grass, grass-shrub mixture, and grass-tree mixture). The resulting RcTM system produced higher model accuracy for estimating annual cumulative gross primary productivity (GPP) (R-2 > 0.6, RMSE <390 g c m(-2)) relative to net ecosystem exchange of cO2 (NEE) (R-2 > 0.4, RMSE <180 g c m(-2)). Model performance in estimating rangeland c fluxes varied by season and vegetation type. The RcTM captured the spatial variability of SOc stocks with R-2 = 0.6 when validated against SOc measurements across 13 NEON sites. Model simulations indicated slightly enhanced SOc stocks for the flux tower sites during the past decade, which is mainly driven by an increase in precipitation. Future efforts to refine the RcTM system will benefit from long-term network-based monitoring of vegetation biomass, c fluxes, and SOc stocks.

Determination of nutritional composition in citrus fruits (c-aurantium) during maturity

Purpose The purpose of this paper was to determine and compare nutritional composition of different parts of citrus fruits, namely, citrus aurantium (peel: albedo, flavedo and pulp: juice, pomace) . This study was conducted through three stages of fruit maturity (green, yellow and orange). Total polyphenols, flavonoids, -carotene, total chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, acidity, total soluble solid and the minerals (ca, Mg, Zn, Na, K, Fe, Mn cu) were evaluated. Moreover, the relationship between the total polyphenol, flavonoids and the antioxidant activity was determined. Design/methodology/approach Total polyphenols were determined by the Folin-ciocalteu method. Flavonoids were assessed by the aluminum chloride colorimetric method. ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Mn and cu were measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. K and Na contents were determined by using a flame photometer. Other nutritional composition was determined by volumetric method. Findings The result showed that the concentrations of antioxidants, total polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamin c, total chlorophyll, total acidity and antioxidant activity (DPPH%) decreased during the maturity of fruit while the value of pH and -carotene increases. In addition, the concentrations of the most minerals decreased through the maturation of fruit except Na. Anova statistical analysis of all the studied chemical variables was shown significant differences between all the samples. The pH, total soluble solids, -caroteniod: orange juice had the highest average while green juice had the lowest. Ascorbic acid, total acidity, total chlorophyll: green juice had the highest average while orange juice has the lowest. Total phenol, K, Mg, Fe, cu, Mn: green flavedo had the highest average while orange juice had the lowest. A plethora of studies over several decades has demonstrated the importance of autophagy in aging and age-related neurodegenerative disease. The role of autophagy in damage clearance and cell survival is well established, and supports a prevailing view that increasing autophagic activity can be broadly beneficial, and could form the basis of anti-aging interventions. However, macroautophagy/autophagy also promotes some elements of senescence. For example, in c. elegans hermaphrodites it facilitates conversion of intestinal biomass into yolk, leading to sex-specific gut atrophy and senescent steatosis.
