Assessing OBT formation and enrichment: ROS signaling is involved in the radiation hormesis induced by tritium exposure in algae

Tritium is the main component of radioactive wastewater from nuclear power plants and can be migrated into organisms to form organically bound tritium (OBT), which may pose a potential risk to aquatic ecosystem. Hence, it is essential to monitor OBT conversion in the presence of tritium exposure. In this study, the effects of pretreatment methods such as digestion on the recovery of tritium were discussed. It was found that microwave digestion pretreatment could improve the recovery of tritium by up to 90 % and allow OBT measurement with a small sample size equivalent to about 60 mg (dry weight). In addition, the efficiency of OBT transformation was different among biological samples, and the radiation hormesis phenomenon was induced by tritium exposure (3.7 x 106 Bq/L) in microalgae chlorella vulgaris(c. vulgaris). The tritium exposure may induce radiation hormesis through the reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling pathway, thus improving the photosynthetic ca-pacity and metabolism level of c. vulgaris. Furthermore, enhancement of photorespiration metabolism and the antioxidation system may be important means for c. vulgaris to balance damage by tritium radiation. This study provides insights for further investigating OBT behavior, and will contribute to understanding the equilibrium damage mechanism of algae exposed to tritium.

PMMA composite bone cement containing bioactive and ferrimagnetic glass-ceramic particles: Effect of temperature and of the additional phase on some physical and mechanical properties

In this work, PMMA-based composite bone cements, embedding bioactive and ferrimagnetic glass-ceramic particles, have been prepared and characterized. Bioactivity, wettability, density, curing parameters, viscoelastic behaviour, bending strengths and creep have been investigated at 37 degrees c. The growth of a layer of HA on the samples surface after immersion in SBF has been confirmed. The presence of glass-ceramic particles improved the wetting behaviour of the composite cements. Shorter curing times and lower maximum temperatures for the three composite cements, in comparison to the plain one, have been detected. Almost unaffected mechanical properties of the composite bone cements have been found in comparison to those of the plain commercial cement both at room and at 37 degrees c. A little increase of the viscous flow has been evidenced in the composite samples at 37 degrees c. Radiographic imaging confirmed the intrinsic radiopacity of the composite cements.

This work deals with the preparation of freeze-cast scaffolds using a bioactive glass from the SiO2-caO-Na2O-P2O5-K2O-MgO system. This material could be sintered at lower temperatures (650 degrees c) than other variations of bioactive glasses, which is an important advantage in terms of energy and cost savings. This behavior represents a great advantage in terms of energy and cost savings. The freeze-casting step was conducted using water as a solvent and liquid nitrogen as a coolant. The prepared samples were examined according to their pore structure, thermal behavior, mechanical stability, and bioactivity. The glass transition temperature (Tg), crystallization onset temperature (Tx), and maximum crystallization temperature (Tc) evaluated for this bioactive glass were about 660 degrees c, 690 degrees c, and 705 degrees c. consequently, the freeze-cast scaffolds could be sintered at 650 degrees c for 2-8 h, which favored viscous flow sintering without crystallization. Bioactivity assays were conducted by soaking the scaffolds in simulated body fluid for up to 21 days, showing that these materials present a bioactive behavior, inducing hydroxyapatite formation. These materials' mechanical properties and biocompatibility make them promising candidates for use in trabecular bone repair.

This study presents a physico-chemical characterization of bagasse obtained from the artisanal and industrial production of Sotol. The last was employed as feedstock for acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation using clostridium beijerinckii. chemical analyses revealed a significant presence of cac2O4, and levels of inorganic elements close to or above the limits established in ISO 16968:2015. These, together with their calorific values that are below other lignocellulosic materials, limit the use of sotol bagasse as solid biofuel. Structural characterization exhibited that the industrial sotol bagasse contained cellulose with lower crystallinity, thus easing its bioavailability for microorganisms to perform ABE fermentation. It was possible to obtain acetone, butanol, and ethanol (0.94 +/- 0.05 g/L, 1.97 +/- 0.52 g/L and 1.90 +/- 0.40 g/L, respectively) using industrial sotol bagasse as substrate for c. beijerinckii. Then a scale-up of ABE fermentation was carried out to obtain information on ABE yield and clostridium growth kinetics at different working volumes. ABE yield was lower the scale-up experiment (0.31 +/- 0.02 g/g) compared to the obtained with smaller working volume (0.48 +/- 0.07 g/g). These results offer crucial insights into the potential use of industrial sotol bagasse as a novel renewable feedstock to obtain biofuels throughout ABE fermentation.

Beer is a complex product due to its raw materials (malt, hops, yeast, and water). Beer production can also use other matters as adjuncts. This study investigated the influence of Mandacaru fruit pulp (MFP) as an adjunct on volatile and phenolic compounds, and antioxidant properties of Beer. Worts were produced using four treatments including a control. Fermentations were conducted for 10 days at 18 degrees c using yeast Lachancea spp, maturated at 3 degrees c for 15 days, and bottled at 20 degrees c for 15 days. All compounds were evaluated by HPLc, and Gc-MS. Worts' supplementation influenced the volatile and phenolic profile and increased the antioxidant activity of wort and Beer. Beers A (100 g of MFP/L), B (200 g of MFP/L), and c (300 g of MFP/L) presented higher ethanol and glycerol content. Beer c contained the highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic content. Worts' supple-mented with MFP increased aroma formation.

Female-to-male differential transcription patterns of miRNA-mRNA networks in the livers of dioxin-exposed mice

Non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) have important roles in regulating the expression of liver mRNAs in response to xenobiotic-exposure, but their roles concerning dioxins such as TcDD (2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) are less clear. This report concerns the potential implication of liver (class I) and circulating (class II) miRNAs in hepatotoxicity of female and male mice after acute exposure to TcDD. The data show that, of a total of 38 types of miRNAs, the expression of eight miRNAs were upregulated in both female and male mice exposed to TcDD. Inversely, the expression of nine miRNAs were significantly downregulated in both animal genders. Moreover, certain miRNAs were preferentially induced in either females or males. The potential downstream regulatory effects of miRNAs on their target genes was evaluated by determining the expression of three group of genes that are potentially involved in cancer biogenesis, other diseases and in hepatotoxicity. It was found that certain cancer-related genes were more highly expressed females rather than males after exposure to TcDD. Furthermore, a paradoxical female-to-male transcriptional pattern was found for several disease-related and hepatotoxicity-related genes. These results suggest the possibility of developing of new miRNA-specific interfering molecules to address their dysfunctions as caused by TcDD.

Effect of carbon and oxygen on the high-temperature properties of silicon carbide-hafnium carbide nanocomposite fiber

The polymer-derived ceramics (PDcs) technique enables relatively low-temperature fabrication of Si-based ce-ramics, with silicon carbide fiber as a representative product. Polycarbosilane (PcS) has Si-c backbone structures and can be converted to silicon carbide. In the PDcs method, residual or excess carbon is generated from the precursor (c/Si ratio = 2 for polycarbosilane). Because of the non-stoichiometry of Sic, the physicochemical properties of polymer-derived Sic are inferior to those of conventional monolithic Sic. Herein, a silicon carbide-hafnium carbide nanocomposite fiber was optimized by crosslinking oxygen into the PcS fiber by regulating the oxidation curing time. During pyrolysis, carbothermal reduction, and sintering, carbon was removed by reaction with hydrogen and cross-linked oxygen. Non-destructive techniques (X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and high-temperature thermomechanical analysis) were used to investigate the effects of excess carbon. The microstructure of the near-stoichiometric Sic-Hfc nanocomposite fiber was more densified, with superior high-temperature properties.

In Situ Electrochemically Oxidative Activation Inducing Ultrahigh Rate capability of Vanadium Oxynitride/carbon cathode for Zinc- Ion Batteries

As a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) still lack cathode materials with large capacity and high rate capability. Herein, a spherical carbon-confined nanovanadium oxynitride with a polycrystalline feature (VNxOy/c) was synthesized by the solvothermal reaction and following nitridation treatment. As a cathode material for ZIBs, it is interesting that the electrochemical performance of the VNxOy/c cathode is greatly improved after the first charging process viain situ electrochemically oxidative activation. The oxidized VNxOy/c delivers a greatly enhanced reversible capacity of 556 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 compared to the first discharge capacity of 130 mAh g-1 and a high capacity of 168 mAh g-1 even at 80 A g-1. The ex situ characterizations verify that the insertion/extraction of Zn2+ does not affect the crystal structure of oxidized VNxOy/c to promise a stable cycle life (retain 420 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 10 A g-1). The experimental analysis further elucidates that charging voltage and H2O in the electrolyte are curial factors to activate VNxOy/c in that the oxygen replaces the partial nitrogen and creates abundant vacancies, inducing a conversion from VNxOy/c to VNx-mOy+2m/c and then resulting in considerably strengthened rate performance and improved Zn2+ storage capability. The study broadens the horizons of fast ion transport and is exceptionally desirable to expedite the application of high-rate ZIBs.

Effect of bentonite content on the suspension stability of a glaze slurry and final enamel performance

The influence of bentonite as a suspending agent on the processing and performance of the final enamel product was studied with the aim of prolonging the service life of enamel. The suspension stability of the glaze slurry was also evaluated, and the influence of the layered structure of bentonite on the suspension was explored. In addition, the effect of bentonite on the flexural strength and fracture toughness of enamel coatings on metal substrates was investigated. Finally, acid corrosion resistance experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of bentonite on the corrosion performance of the enamel coating. The results showed that the stability of the glaze slurry and mechanical properties of the enamel products were significantly improved by adding 1 wt% bentonite to the glaze slurry. The addition of 0.5 wt% bentonite was optimal for enhancing the acid corrosion resistance of the enamel. This study provides a useful reference for improving the quality of enamel products and prolonging their service life.

Prediction of gas product yield from packaging waste pyrolysis: support vector and Gaussian process regression models

The pyrolysis process enables the transformation of plastic waste into products such as oil, solid residue, and gas at temperatures of around 300-900 degrees c by thermal decomposition. conversion of such waste into valuable products depends on various factors, such as raw material composition, temperature, heating rate, residence time, and catalyst. From this point of view, in this study, predictions of gas product yield based on different pyrolysis conditions including waste types (LDPE-c/LDPE), temperature (400-600-800 degrees c), heating rate (5-10-20 degrees c/min), type of catalyst (zeolite-clay-sludge) and amount of catalyst (5%, 10%, 15%, by weight) were carried out with support from the vector regression (SVR) and the Gaussian process (GPR) models using the results of experimental studies performed under various conditions. Different kernel functions were used for SVR (Linear, Quadratic, cubic, Gaussian) and GPR (Squared Exponential, Matern 5/2, Exponential, Rational Quadratic). The Gaussian Kernel Function presented a good prediction performance (89% R-2 and 0.0011 RMSE) for SVR while the Exponential Kernel Function was the most appropriate for GPR (93% R-2 and 0.0011 RMSE). On the other hand, the deviations in the SVR model with linear Kernel change over a wide range of 0.25-80.85%, and the GPR model with exponential kernel show deviations close to each other in the range of 0.06-3.91%. The present study provides new information for future studies by understanding the pyrolysis process of plastic waste and predicting product yield.
