Synthesis of carbon nanoparticles from mustard oil and evaluation of their antibacterial activity against dental caries

Dental infections are thorny since time immemorial mainly due to the accumulation of plaque on the teeth surface. Antibiotics are slowly losing their capability to degrade bacteria due to development of resistance in them which necessitates the need of new drug formulations. The role of carbon for tartar and plaque removal in the form of charcoal powder is seen for ages. Hence, in this study, nanotised form of carbon has been exploited for their role against resistant bacteria. Green synthesis of carbon nanoparticles (cNPs) was accomplished from the soot of the burning mustard oil which was collected on clay pots. The synthesised particles were characterised by UV spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Antibiotic sensitivity test of the isolated oral bacteria from dental cavity, post cavity and cavity-free patients was done in order to find out the antibiotic resistant bacteria. Antimicrobial efficiency (minimum inhibitory concentration) of cNPs was carried out on these antibiotic resistant bacteria and observed their microbial killing potential. Hemolysis assay was conducted to comprehend the toxicity of these nanoparticles on human cells. cell viability study on MRc-5 cell line showed that nanoparticles are safe to use.

Structure of nanographite synthesised by electrochemical oxidation and exfoliation of polycrystalline graphite

The Letter presents the results of characterisation of intercalated and exfoliated graphite. The electrochemically exfoliated graphite (EEG) was synthesised in solution containing sulphuric acid and potassium chlorate(V). The number of graphene layers, degree of disordering and the presence of functional groups were determined using X-ray diffraction method, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to imaging morphology and structure of the synthesised material. The obtained micrographs indicate the presence of highly disordered areas near the edge of flakes and in-plane ordered lattice structure in the flat zone between disordered areas. X-ray diffraction patterns clearly indicate the presence of both nanographite and graphene oxide. The EEG was also characterised by relatively high thermal stability, which was confirmed using thermogravimetric analysis.

Estimation of the dimension of micropores and mesopores in single walled carbon nanotubes using the method Horvath-Kawazoe, Saito and Foley and BJH equations

The adsorption isotherm of the single walled carbon nanotubes (cNTs) is measured. The mathematical models for calculating pore size distribution (PSD) are modified. The PSD of sample is determined using Horvath-Kawazoe (KH), Saito and Foley (SF) and Barrett-Joyner- Halenda (BJH) methods. An average potential function has been determined inside the slit-like and cylindrical pores. Since all of the regions of cNTs have same type that adsorbed nitrogen in the same conditions, the calculated PSDs from HK, SF and BJH models have same trend in both interior and exterior surfaces. By adding the adsorption term on outer surface, HK, SF and BJH models have been developed hence the pore volume increased.

Growth of nanocarbons by catalysis and their applications

Nanocarbons, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, have had a remarkable history and impact on current applications. We briefly review the genesis and development of nanocarbons over the last 50 years, referencing key articles, including the role of catalysts in their formation. This issue focuses on the formation mechanisms and controlled growth of carbon nanotubes and graphene on substrates through catalytic processes. The five contributions in this issue review the mechanisms and theory of catalytic growth of nanocarbons (carbon nanotube forests, superaligned arrays, single-wall carbon nanotubes), the growth of large-quantity, high-quality graphene on metal substrates, and the unique and excellent properties for current and potential commercial applications.

探究激光重熔纳米Si c对Fe基Ni/Wc金属陶瓷涂层摩擦学性能的影响。利用火焰喷涂设备在45#钢基体表面制备Fe基Ni/Wc金属陶瓷涂层,并对涂层进行未添加和添加纳米Si c的激光重熔处理。利用EDS、XRD、SEM等测试手段分别测定涂层微区组织成分、物相结构和显微组织;利用摩擦磨损试验机在常温干摩擦条件下测试涂层摩擦磨损性能。结果表明:激光重熔处理基本消除涂层内部缺陷,而Si c纳米粒子的加入使重熔层晶粒尺寸进一步细化,提高了重熔层塑性变形的能力;火焰喷涂试样、无纳米粒子激光重熔和有纳米粒子激光重熔试样的平均摩擦因数分别为0.77、0.59和0.54;无纳米粒子激光重熔和有纳米粒子激光重熔试样的磨损率分别是重熔前的35.2%和22.2%;重熔前后磨损形式由黏着磨损向磨粒磨损过渡,且添加纳米的涂层磨损程度最小;添加纳米粒子的激光重熔试样的硬质相颗粒镶嵌在软质基体中,起到强韧结合的作用,使得重熔层表面耐磨性的进一步提高。

A VEDA simulation on cement paste: using dynamic atomic force microscopy to characterize cellulose nanocrystal distribution

cellulose nanocrystal (cNc) enhances mechanical performance of cement composites via short-circuit diffusion (ScD). cNcs transport water along their hydrophilic surface into the unhydrated cement cores to induce extra hydration. It is important to characterize cNc distribution because it determines the ScD pathways. This study for the first time, employs virtual environment dynamic atomic force microscopy, an atomic force microscopy computational tool to investigate cNc distribution in both fresh and hardened cement pastes. The methods not only provide insights in a static context (hardened sample), but also offer opportunities to evaluate the interaction of cNcs with calcium-silicate-hydrate growth during the kinetic early ages of hydration.

Prion diseases are a group of animal and human neurodegenerative, albeit transmissible diseases. The lack of effective preventive and therapeutic approaches represents a serious problem in their management. This is especially true for those prion diseases of animals which behave like infectious and contagious diseases. In the case of sheep scrapie, the well- known role of variations in the prion protein gene (PRNP) in conferring resistance/susceptibility represents an opportunity which has been exploited to select populations genetically resistant to the disease. The recent description of camel prion disease (cPrD) in Algeria and Tunisia and the suspicion falling into the category of infectious prion diseases, make urgent to investigate the possible existence of genetic determinants useful for its control. Herein, we investigated PRNP variability in 232 animals from six dromedary populations (Azawad, Hybrid, Naili, Rguibi, Sahraoui, Targui) in Algeria. A Gly69Ser mutation was observed in a single animal of the Targui population and a Gly134Glu polymorphism in the Azawad, Hybrid and Rguibi populations, with a frequency of the 134Glu allele of 2.6%, 7.7% and 7.1%, respectively. Although our work highlights a low variability of Algerian dromedary PRNP, as a possible indication of a recent evolutionary history of cPrD, it offers also evidence of PRNP variants whose role in prion disease resistance/susceptibility deserve to be deepened. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

Flexible pressure sensors offer the advantages of flexibility, low cost, and easy to large area fabrication, and they have wide applications in many fields. This work proposes a flexible capacitive pressure sensor that exhibits a sandwich-like structure, a good performance, and a simple process. Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) is used to fabricate the two electrodes of the sensor because this low cost material possesses good mechanical and electronic properties. Meanwhile, MWNT naturally forms numerous micro-nano structures that can enhance the sensitivity of a sensor. In addition, the dielectric layer of the sensor composed of parylene c (poly(chloro-p-xylylene)) is sandwiched between the two electrodes. The experimental results show that the pressure sensor demonstrates high sensitivity and a rapid response. The average sensitivity is 1.33 kPa (1) at a pressure that ranges from 0 to 758 Pa and the response time reach to millisecond level. Given that low cost, good property and simple process, the sensor has wide application prospects in electronic skins, health monitoring devices, and other wearable electronic products.
