Study of the Polymorphism of ISSR Markers in Spined Loaches of the Genus cobitis (cobitidae) in connection with Problems of Differentiation of the Species Involved in the Formation of Polyploid Forms of Hybrid Origin and Determination of Their Taxonomic Status

We have analyzed the polymorphism of ISSR fragments of DNA by polymerase chain reaction in spined loaches for the first time. The analysis has made it possible to successfully differentiate the genomes, which were presumably involved in the formation of polyploid forms of hybrid origin: cobitis taenia;spined loaches from the Danube River basin, which are diagnosed as c. elongatoides;c. tanaitica from the Don River basin and spined loaches from Lake Sinoe, which are also assigned to the species c. tanaitica by a number of authors. The following conclusions have been made based on comparative morphological studies of previously undifferentiated forms: (1) spined loaches from central Europe with karyotype 2n = 50, NF = 96 correspond to the diagnosis of the species c. elongatoides;this species also differs from a number of closely related species and polyploid forms in the origin of the dorsal fin in front of the base of the pelvic fins, as well as in the presence of a spot in the lower half of the caudal fin base;(2) spined loaches from Lake Sinoe and other populations of central Europe with karyotype 2n = 50, NF = 86 are nonconspecific to c. tanaitica and should apparently be ranked as an independent species, c. megaspila.

carbon and nitrogen allocation in leaf, fine root, soil, and microbial biomass in invasive Prosopis juliflora and native Acacia nilotica in semi-arid forests of the Aravalli hills

Semi-arid forests of the Aravalli hills are rich in tree diversity, but plant invasions during the last several decades, especially by Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) Dc. have affected the vegetation structure and biogeochemical cycles of these forests. We compared carbon (c), and nitrogen (N) concentrations in the fine root, leaf, and soil physicochemical properties under the invasive tree species, P. juliflora, and native, Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd. ex Delile, to evaluate the effect of invasive tree species on total soil c, N concentrations, and c:N ratios. We also analyzed the soil samples for soil organic c (SOc), total N (TN), soil microbial biomass c (MBc), and soil microbial biomass N (MBN) and stocks. Soil physical and chemical properties under the invasive P. juliflora and native A. nilotica trees varied significantly (p < 0.05). The c and N concentrations in the fine root, leaf, soil SOc, TN and MBc, and MBN concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in P. juliflora than A. nilotica while c:N ratio, and bulk density, exhibited the opposite trends. The c concentrations followed the order fine root > leaf > soil > microbial biomass while for N concentration and c:N ratios, it was leaf > fine root > soil > microbial biomass. The invasive P. juliflora had a lower c:N ratio in leaf, fine root, and soil than the native A. nilotica. The average rhizosphere soil, fine root, and leaf c concentration for P. juliflora were 36.72 +/- 0.84 g kg(-1), 547.84 +/- 18.56 g kg(-1), and 534.77 +/- 5.12 g kg(-1), respectively and were 1.42, 1.16 and 1.04 times higher than for A. nilotica. Similarly, P. juliflora average rhizosphere soil, fine root, and leaf N concentrations were 4.37 +/- 0.11 g kg(-1), 19.96 +/- 0.94 g kg(-1), and 23.18 +/- 0.84 g kg(-1), respectively, and 2.0, 1.27, and 1.85 times, respectively, higher than for A. nilotica. crocidura, white-toothed shrews, is the most species rich genus among mammals. Phylogeny at the species-level is still unresolved, especially for Turkey and its adjacent regions. To understand phylogenetic relationships and mitogenomic features of Turkey's crocidura, we aimed to (i) sequence whole mitogenomes of Turkish shrews, (ii) determine phylogenetic relationships among/within the crocidura suaveolens group and c. leucodon from Turkey by using mitogenomes minus D-loop;(iii) contribute to resolving the phylogenetic position of populations within the c. suaveolens group in a phylogeographical context by using mitochondrial cYTB gene alone, and (iv) discuss the role of possible glacial refugia that may have driven the diversification of some taxa within crocidura. Based on two data sets, all analyses revealed that the Turkish shrews were divided into three major lineages: c. mimula, c. gueldenstaedtii, and c. leucodon. This was in agreement with results of previous studies, suggesting (i) that the taxa within the c. suaveolens group such as c. caspica, c. cypria, c. gueldenstaedtii, c. iculisma, c. mimula, and c. shantungensis were separate species. However, the existence of c. sibirica could not be confirmed. We also proposed (i) carpathian and caucasian refugia for c. mimula and c. gueldenstaedtii, respectively, and (ii) the existence of a new refugium for c. leucodon that covers Uludag-Bursa and its adjacent surroundings in the southern Marmara region. Moreover, the Turkish samples of c. leucodon were clustered into two sublineages, and mimula shrews from Lesvos-Greece and Western Anatolia-Turkey might represent an undetermined or undescribed taxon.

Aim: A series of new hybrid molecules with two iodine atoms on the sides were synthesized. Methods: A one-pot, two-component method with trifluoroacetic acid as an effective catalyst to obtain dihydro-pyrrol-2-one compounds was developed. Short reaction times, a cheap catalyst, high yields and clean work-up are benefits of this method. Results: The chemical structures of the newly synthesized compounds were verified through spectroscopic techniques. Their antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and c. albicans was tested in vitro. conclusion: Nc- and OH- radicals confer broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, including against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. compounds 3g >7 and >9 were most active on the two bacterial species, while 3l >9 and >3i were most active against the fungal strain.

Transarterial therapies in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma eligible for transarterial embolization: a US cost-effectiveness analysis

Objectives To assess the cost-effectiveness of transarterial radioembolization (TARE) versus conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTAcE) and drug-eluting beads chemoembolization (DEE-TAcE) for patients with unresectable early- to intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (Hcc).Design A cohort-based Markov model with a five-year time horizon was developed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the three embolization treatments. Upon entering the model, patients with Hcc received either TARE or one of the two other embolization treatments. Patients remained in a "watch and wait" state for tumor downstaging that allowed them to move to health states such as liver transplant, resection, systemic therapies, or cure. clinical input parameters were retrieved from the published literature, and where values could not be sourced, assumptions were made and validated by clinical experts. Health benefits were quantified using quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). cost input parameters were obtained from various sources, including the Medicare cost Report, IBM & REG;Micromedex RED BOOK, and published *** At five years, TARE was found to be cost-saving (saving $15,779 per person compared to cTAcE) and produced 0.33 more QALYs per person than cTAcE. TARE cost $13,696 more but produced 0.33 more QALYs than DEE-TAcE, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of $41,474 per QALY gained at five years. After accounting for parameter uncertainty, the likelihood of TARE being cost-effective was at least 90% against all comparators at a cost-effectiveness threshold of $100,000 per QALY *** TARE produces more QALYs than cTAcE and DEE-TAcE, with a high probability of being cost-effective against both comparators. Bivalve molluscs are a high quality animal protein source for humans, and the demand for farmed bivalves is increasing. Among the bivalve molluscs, the Portuguese oyster crassostrea angulata, is one of the most popular species and is intensively farmed in warm water. In order to further increase the aquaculture yield of c. angulata through cost-effective farming practices, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of stocking density, water depth and aquaculture gear on the aquaculture performance of c. angulata in the nursery and grow-out phases. The results of this study revealed that both stocking density and water depth affected the survival rate and growth rate of c. angulata in the nursery and grow-out phases. In the nursery phase, high stocking density reduced the survival rate, but was beneficial to the growth of c. angulata spats, while 1.5 m and 3 m were optimum for the survival and growth of c. angulata spats. In the grow-out phase, the use of lantern net/ rope culture, low stocking density with narrow substrate spacing and shallow water (1.5 m) were beneficial to the survival, growth and yeild of c. angulata. The results of this study can be used as a guide to further improve c. angulata aquaculture practices, and fill the knowledge gap on the effects of stocking density, water depth and aquaculture gear on c. angulata aquaculture.

Antimicrobial potential of myricetin-coated zinc oxide nanocomposite against drug-resistant clostridium perfringens

Backgroundclostridium perfringens (c. perfringens) is an important pathogen in livestock animals and humans causing a wide array of systemic and enteric diseases. The current study was performed to investigate the inhibitory activity of myricetin (MYR), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposite against growth and alpha-hemolysin of c. perfringens isolated from beef meat and chicken *** overall occurrence of c. perfringens was 29.8%. The prevalence of c. perfringens was higher in chicken (38.3%) than in beef meat products (10%). The antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that c. perfringens isolates exhibited high resistance levels for metronidazole (93%), bacitracin (89%), penicillin G (84%), and lincomycin (76%). Of note, 1% of c. perfringens isolates were pandrug-resistant (PDR), 4% were extensive drug-resistant (XDR), while 91% were multidrug-resistant. The results of broth microdilution technique revealed that all tested c. perfringens isolates were susceptible to MYR-loaded ZnO/PVA with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIcs) ranged from 0.125 to 2 mu g/mL. Moreover, the MYR either alone or combined with the nanocomposite had no cytotoxic activities on chicken red blood cells (cRBcs). Transcriptional modifications of MYR, ZnO, ZnO/PVA, and ZnO/PVA/MYR nanocomposite were determined, and the results showed significant down-regulation of alpha-hemolysin fold change to 0.5, 0.7, 0.6, and 0.28, respectively compared to the untreated *** is an in vitro study reporting the antimicrobial potential of MYR-coated ZnO nanocomposite as an effective therapeutic candidate against c. perfringens. An in vivo approach is the next step to provide evidence for applying these alternatives in the treatment and prevention of c. perfringens-associated diseases.

Assessment and Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals in Fish Feeds, Water, and Some Tissues of cyprinus carpio cultured in Different Environments (Biofloc Technology and Earthen Pond System)

Fish feed quality is the main determinant of fish flesh quality, so it is important for successful aquaculture. The current study determines the concentration of heavy metals in fish feeds (A and B), water, and their bioaccumulation in gills, liver, and muscle of c. carpio cultured in different environments (biofloc technology and earthen pond systems). In addition, the correlation between heavy metals in fish feeds with bioaccumulated metals in fish tissues was also determined. Results revealed that most heavy metal concentration was significantly greater (P < 0.05) in feed B than in feed A but in permissible range, while all the heavy metal concentration was notably higher in earthen ponds than in biofloc technology. Result from the bioaccumulation factor and concentration of the metals showed that heavy metals were highly accumulated in the fish liver followed by gills. The metal concentration in fish feeds and fish edible parts (muscle) was lower than the WHO standard level;however, the amount of Pb was higher in the fish muscle, liver, and gills, which is harmful for human consumption and also for fish health. Though the correlation test revealed that all of the metals from the feeds were positively correlated to the metals in fish tissues, but most of the estimated correlation was significant and linearly correlated. It can be concluded that producers must measure feed quality correctly to avoid heavy metal contamination because it may assimilate and accumulate in the food chain.

Beyond the Instinct Debate: Daniel Lehrman's contributions to Animal Behavior Studies

This paper examines the contributions of Daniel S. Lehrman (1919-1972) to animal behavior studies. Though widely cited as a critic of the early ethological program presented by Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen, other significant aspects of Lehrman's career and research have not received historical attention. In this paper, I offer a fuller account of Lehrman's work by situating his debate with ethologists within the larger context of Lehrman's early scholarly development under G. K. Noble and T. c. Schneirla, by examining his scientific research on the ring-dove as well as his epistemological views about the best way to understand animal behaviour, and by presenting his leadership in institution and network-building of interdisciplinary approaches to animal behavior. This essay highlights Lehrman's impact on the evolution of ethology, endocrinology, and developmental biology.

Lamin Filament Assembly Derived from the Atomic Structure of the Antiparallel Four-Helix Bundle

The nucleoskeletal protein lamin is primarily responsible for the mechanical stability of the nucleus. The lamin assembly process requires the A11, A22, and AcN binding modes of the coiled-coil dimers. Although X-ray crystallography and chemical cross-linking analysis of lamin A/c have provided snapshots of A11 and AcN binding modes, the assembly mechanism of the entire filament remains to be explained. Here, we report a crystal structure of a coil 2 fragment, revealing the A22 interaction at the atomic resolution. The structure showed detailed structural features, indicating that two coiled-coil dimers of the coil 2 subdomain are separated and then re-organized into the antiparallel-four-helix bundle. Furthermore, our findings suggest that the AcN binding mode between coil 1a and the c-terminal part of coil 2 when the A11 tetramers are arranged by the A22 interactions. We propose a full assembly model of lamin A/c with the curvature around the linkers, reconciling the discrepancy between the in situ and in vitro observations. Our model accounts for the balanced elasticity and stiffness of the nucleus from external pressure.
