Effects of preform structures on the mechanical and ablation properties of c/Zrc-Sic composites

In order to investigate the effects of preform structures on the mechanical and ablation properties of c/Zrc-Sic composites, 3D4X, 3D5X and 3DZc c/Zrc-Sic composites were fabricated with the same process. The mechanical and ablation properties of 3D4X, 3D5X, and 3DZc c/Zrc-Sic composites were investigated. Results showed that the tensile strength (122.26 MPa) and bending strength (233.29 MPa) of 3D5X c/Zrc-Sic composites were the largest, followed by the tensile strength (112.79 MPa) and bending strength (203.03 MPa) of 3DZc composites and the tensile strength (86.22 MPa) and bending strength (137.59 MPa) of 3D4X composites. The mechanical properties of c/Zrc-Sic composites were mainly related to the fiber content in the axis direction and matrix compactness. In terms of ablation properties, 3DZc c/Zrc-Sic composites acted out the worst performance (the linear ablation rates of 0.0293 mm/s and the mass ablation rates 0.00766 g/s), followed by 3D4X composites (the linear ablation rates of 0.0276 mm/s and the mass ablation rates 0.00683 g/s) and 3D5X composites (the linear ablation rates of 0.0175 mm/s and the mass ablation rates 0.00653 g/s), respectively, which were mainly due to the specific ablation angles, thermal conductivities, and ablation oxides contents caused by fiber volume fraction, braided angles, and other forming parameters.

Robust Statistical Detection of GNSS Multipath Using Inter-Frequency c/N0 Differences

Multipath detection and mitigation are crucial issues for global navigation satellite system (GNSS) high-precision positioning. The multi-frequency carrier power-to-noise density ratio (c/N-0)-based multipath detection technique has achieved good results in real-time static and low-dynamic applications, and shown better practicability because of the low computational load and the requirement for little additional hardware. However, the classic multipath detection method based on inter-frequency c/N-0 differences directly employs the 3 sigma rule to determine the threshold without considering the distribution of detection statistics and their variation characteristics with elevation angle, and ignores the interference of outliers to the reference functions. A robust multipath detection method is proposed in this paper. The reference functions of c/N-0 differences are fitted using least absolute deviation (LAD) to obtain more accurate nominal values. According to the skew characteristics of the detection statistics, a medcouple (Mc)-based adjusted boxplot is employed to determine the threshold. The performance of the new detection method is verified in the multipath environments. The experimental results show that compared with the classic method, the new multipath detector has strong robustness and can respond more accurately to large changes in multipath (MP) combination values at most elevation angles. It is sensitive to short-delay multipath and diffraction, and is an important supplement to multipath detection techniques.

This work continues our systematic study of Li- and Mn- rich cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. We chose Li2MnO3 as a model electrode material with the aim of correlating the improved electrochemical characteristics of these cathodes initially activated at 0 degrees c with the structural evolution of Li2MnO3, oxygen loss, formation of per-oxo like species (O-2(2-)) and the surface chemistry. It was established that performing a few initial charge/discharge (activation) cycles of Li2MnO3 at 0 degrees c resulted in increased discharge capacity and higher capacity retention, and decreased and substantially stabilized the voltage hysteresis upon subsequent cycling at 30 degrees c or at 45 degrees c. In contrast to the activation of Li2MnO3 at these higher temperatures, Li2MnO3 underwent step-by-step activation at 0 degrees c, providing a stepwise traversing of the voltage plateau at >4.5 V during initial cycling. Importantly, these findings agree well with our previous studies on the activation at 0 degrees c of 0.35Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.65Li[Mn0.45Ni0.35co0.20]O-2 materials. The stability of the interface developed at 0 degrees c can be ascribed to the reduced interactions of the per-oxo-like species formed and the oxygen released from Li2MnO3 with solvents in ethylene carbonate-methyl-ethyl carbonate/LiPF6 solutions. Our TEM studies revealed that typically, upon initial cycling both at 0 degrees c and 30 degrees c, Li2MnO3 underwent partial structural layered-to-spinel (Li2Mn2O4) transition.

Sepsis is a major cause of death in intensive care units whose development is supported by an imbalance of oxidative stress and antioxidant. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a primer endogen antioxidant that prevents reactive oxygen species (ROS). Extensive studies on animals and humans have examined cucumis melo L.c, a cantaloupe rich in SOD, and its combination with gliadin. The studies aimed to determine the effect of enteral administration of cucumis melo L.c. gliadin (cME-gliadin) 28 days before inducing sepsis in rats. This experimental study aimed to compare four groups of male Wistar rats, including negative and positive control rats and those supplemented with SOD cME-gliadin 1 IU/day and SOD cME-gliadin 5 IU/day. All rats were given the same standard, except the supplementation for 28 days. Sepsis was induced by intraperitoneal injection of LPS 10 mg/kg. Enteral admin-istration of SOD - gliadin extract of cME-gliadin for 28 days was used as antioxidant prophylaxis against oxidative stress due to sepsis. The results showed that enteral administration of cME-gliadin of 1 IU/day and 5 IU/day significantly increased SOD levels based on examination after 14 and 28 days. Also, it significantly decreased MDA (p < 0.001), TNF-alpha (p < 0.001), and lactate levels in rats induced by sepsis. However, the increase in lactate levels was above >1.64 mmol/l, indicating a high mortality rate. There was no significant difference in SOD, MDA, TNF-alpha, and Lactate levels between SOD 1 IU and SOD 5 IU. This descriptive data show that SOD 5 IU has a better result in MDA, TNF-alpha, and Lactate levels than SOD 1 IU.

The effect of Ru/c and Mgcl2 on the cleavage of inter- and intra-molecular linkages during cornstalk hydrolysis residue valorization

The cleavage of linkages of lignocellulose is important for its valorization. The linkage cleavage of cornstalk hydrolysis residue was investigated over catalysts (Ru/c + Mgcl2) in EtOAc/H2O solvents. The results show that almost hydrogen bonds, c-c bonds, ether and ester bonds in the matrix of lignin and cellulose were broken, accompanying 80.6% of lignin and 98.5% of cellulose conversion, and obtaining 37.5% of aromatic monomers and 28.8% of lignin oligomers. In the reaction system, biphasic EtOAc/H2O solvents exhibited an effect on cleaving the intermolecular linkages between lignin and cellulose. Mgcl2 showed limited abilities of breaking the alpha-O-4 and beta-O-4 linkages in lignin and limited beta-1, 4-glycosidic and hydrogen bonds in cellulose were cleaved over Ru/c catalyst. The cleavage of c-O linkages (alpha-O-4, beta-O-4, 4-O-5) and c-c bonds (alpha-beta, beta-5) in lignin were mainly dependent on Ru/c catalyst. Much c-O and the stubborn c-c linkages of beta-5, beta-1 and 5-5 were significantly disrupted by the synergistic effect between Mgcl2 and Ru/c. However, Mgcl2 exhibited great contribution to breakage of beta-1, 4-glycosidic linkage, hydrogen bonds and sugar ring of cellulose. The linkage of beta-1, 4-glycosidic, hydrogen bonds and c-c in c5/c6 sugars were significantly broken. The increased yield of products was evidently due to the synergistic effect of Ru/c combined with Mgcl2.

Mathematical modeling and experimental studies on axial drilling load for rotary ultrasonic drilling of c/Sic composites

ceramic matrix composites of type c/Sic have great potential in space applications because of their superior properties such as low density, high wear resistance, and high-temperature resistance. However, due to their heterogeneous, anisotropic, and unstable thermal properties, the machining is still challenging to achieve desired efficiency and quality. For advanced materials, rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM) is considered as a highly efficient technology. Predicting mechanical load in RUM can help to optimize input variables and reduce processing defects in composites. In this research, a mathematical axial drilling load (force and torque) model has been developed based on the indentation fracture theory of material removal mechanism considering penetration trajectory and energy conservation theorem for rotary ultrasonic drilling (RUD) of c/Sic. Experiments were conducted on c/Sic composites to validate the model, and experimental results agreed well with model predictions with less than 14% (force) and 10% (torque) error. Therefore, this theoretical model can be effectively applied to predict axial drilling load during RUD of c/Sic. The relationships of axial drilling force and torque with machining process parameters, including spindle speed, feed rate, and ultrasonic power, were investigated. A specific range of experiments was carried out to demonstrate the benefit of ultrasonic vibration in RUD over conventional drilling (cD) on mechanical load for a designed drilling tool. It was noticed that RUD outperformed cD with a maximum of 38.11% and 34.30% in axial drilling force and torque reduction, respectively. The influence of drilling tool flute length on drilling performance was also elucidated based on a set of experiments using several designed drilling tools.

Author Summary "Synthetic lethality" in cell biology is an extreme example of the effects of higher order genetic interactions: The simultaneous knockout of two or more individually nonessential genes leads to cell death. We define a neural analog to this concept in relation to the locomotor response to gentle touch in c. elegans. Two or more neurons are synthetic essential if individually they are not required for this behavior, yet their combination is. We employ a network control approach to systematically assess all pairs and triplets of neurons by their effect on body wall muscle controllability, and find that only surprisingly small sets of neurons are synthetic essential. They are highly localized in the nervous system and predicted to affect control over specific sets of muscles. Synthetic lethality, the finding that the simultaneous knockout of two or more individually nonessential genes leads to cell or organism death, has offered a systematic framework to explore cellular function, and also offered therapeutic applications. Yet the concept lacks its parallel in neuroscience-a systematic knowledge base on the role of double or higher order ablations in the functioning of a neural system. Here, we use the framework of network control to systematically predict the effects of ablating neuron pairs and triplets on the gentle touch response. We find that surprisingly small sets of 58 pairs and 46 triplets can reduce muscle controllability in this context, and that these sets are localized in the nervous system in distinct groups. Further, they lead to highly specific experimentally testable predictions about mechanisms of loss of control, and which muscle cells are expected to experience this loss.

Efficient Electrocatalytic Performance of WP Nanorods Propagated on WS2/c for Hydrogen Evolution Reduction

Through a stepwise synthesis, intercalation followed by chemical vapor deposition (cVD) method, WP nanorods have been grown on the surface of WS2/c composite. compared to WS2/c, WP nanorods@WS2/c demonstrate better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and long-term chronopotentiometric stability as well as suitability in both acid electrolyte and alkaline electrolyte. In order to uncover the enhanced HER property reason, systematic characterizations were applied to assist analyzing. The characterizations used include X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), electrochemical active surface area (EcSA), Raman, and BET. Based on the analysis, it points that improved EcSA, synergy between WS(2)and WP nanorods, and enhanced degree of graphitization as well, leads to better HER activities of WP nanorods@WS2/c over WS2/c. This work highlights significant role of WP nanorods in WP/WS2/c three-phase composite in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution and may evoke new interest in related nanostructure study.

Exploring How (Ti plus Mo)/c and Ti/Mo Influence the Precipitation Behaviors within Microalloyed Steels: Experimental Evidence and Related Patents Investigation

The main objective of the present study was to understand the influences of different atomic ratios of Ti/Mo and (Ti + Mo)/c on the precipitation behaviors in Ti-Mo HSLA steels. It was found that the steel with a higher Ti/Mo atomic ratio possessed a large theoretical volume fraction of precipitated carbides, but the ferrite matrix did not achieve a corresponding higher microhardness. On the other hand, the experimental results also indicated that it was not suitable to assess the precipitation strengthening effect of the ferrite matrix based on only one of the atomic factors, i.e., (Ti + Mo)/c or Ti/Mo. In addition, from the present study, similarity of the (Ti + Mo)/c atomic ratios is a prerequisite for comparing the precipitation hardening effects in steels having different Ti/Mo atomic ratios. Besides experimental data, the main deduction is also supported by related patent information, which further corroborates the reliability of the present study. Furthermore, of the two steels with different M/c atomic ratios, the ferrite matrix of the H-(M/c) steel showed a rising trend in Vickers hardness when the isothermal holding time was increased from 5 min to 60 min at 650-700 degrees c. This higher strengthening ability, which occurs within ferrite grains after holding at longer times, can be ascribed to the higher austenite decomposition rate occurring in the H-(M/c) atomic ratio steel. Therefore, the hardening mechanisms in both kinds of steel are also discussed in the present study.
