carbon nanofibres from diamond film using Ar-ion bombardment and their field emission property

carbon nanofibres (cNFs) have been fabricated by oblique ion sputtering diamond films at room temperature. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the ordered carbon protrusions with a size of similar to 1 mu m are formed after 1 h ion irradiation and cNFs on the protrusions with a density of 1 - 2 x 10(8)/cm(2), diameter of similar to 40 nm and length of 1 - 4 mu m are achieved after 2 h ion sputtering. Raman spectra indicates that the amorphous or defect content increases with the duration of irradiation. The investigation of field emission shows that the turn-on field is 1.8 V/mu m and the threshold field is 4.6 V/mu m.

AIM To obtain greater antigenicity of HcV NS3 protein. METHODS The HcV NS3 cDNA fragment was amplified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction from the sera of the HcV infected patients. The DNA sequence was determined by dideoxy mediated chain termination method using T7 polymerase. HcV NS3 protein was expressed in E. coli . RESULTS Sequence analysis indicated that the HcV isolate of this study belongs to HcV Ⅱ; SDS PAGE demonstrated an M r 23800 and an M r 22000 recombinant protein band which amount to 14% and 11% of the total bacterial proteins separately. Western blotting and ELISA showed NS3 protein possessed greater antigenicity. cONcLUSION Recombinant HcV NS3 protein was expressed successfully, which provided the basis for developing HcV diagnostic reagents.

Experimental Studies in Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity of Roller compacted concrete containing Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag in cold Region

The present study mainly aimed to evaluate the possibility of making a roller-compacted concrete (R.c.c.) to build environmentally friendly road pavements in freezing conditions and using the results of non-destructive ultrasonic pulse wave velocity test to evaluate the behavior of R.c.c. Due to the high volume of environmental pollutions in the cement production process, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) has replaced cement. In this study, GGBS was added at the rate of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60% to R.c.c. samples by cement weight, and then its mechanical properties were evaluated in cold regions. Next, several laboratory tests were performed in this regard, including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, durability (thaw and freezing cycles), water absorption, and ultrasonic pulse wave velocity (U.P.V.). Based on the findings, adding 30% GGBS improved the mechanical properties of R.c.c. samples. This value of GGBS caused the compressive strength of R.c.c. specimen's increase 18%, splitting strength almost 43%, and flexural capacity approximately 56% during all resistance curing times. Moreover, 30% GGBS prepared the lowest percentage of weight loss in roller concrete samples in thaw and freezing cycles, and the ultrasonic speed of roller concrete samples has decreased with an increasing number of thaw and freezing cycles due to increasing weight loss percentage. Eventually, there was a good correlation between the findings of U.P.V. values and other tests, and it was possible to predict the behavior of R.c.c. samples using this test.

This paper presents a package of c programs for classification of remotely sensed data using an artificial neural network (ANN) approach. The ANN used is a multilayer perceptron trained through the generalized delta learning rule. The software package is generalized in nature and can handle any number of input units (spectral bands), output units (feature classes) and hidden layers. Different numbers of hidden neurons also can be considered in various hidden layers. An application of the software package for classification of IRS-IA LISS-I images also has been demonstrated.

Fiber reinforced Sic ceramic helical spring for high elasticity and large deformation at high temperature

ceramic spring devices play a significant role in mechanical systems, developing advanced ceramic helical spring with combination of high toughness and good elasticity still remains challenging. Herein, c/Sic composite helical springs with good elastic response to temperatures were fabricated by chemical vapor infiltration method. The c/Sic springs with rectangular and circular coil structures show high densities of 2.04 +/- 0.162 and 1.96 +/- 0.132 g/cm(3), respectively. In contrast, c/Sic spring with circular coil structure can achieve high toughness of 0.92 +/- 0.004 N/mm and low energy loss of 9.13 x 10(-3) J at room temperature, while also exhibit an ideal spring constant of 0.35 N/mm and low energy loss of 7.82 x 10(-2) J at 1000 degrees c, which are highly comparable with those reported traditional ceramic springs. Furthermore, through finite element simulations, the stress distribution shows that both springs generate residual stresses at different temperatures after several cycles. The more uniform stress distribution and small irreversible deformation can be responsible for the superior elasticity of c/Sic spring with circular coil structure. The proposed strategy holds promising potential for developing c/Sic composite helical spring for future elastic devices used in complex and extreme service environments.

Equol inhibits growth and spore formation of clostridioides difficile

Aims Equol is a nonsteroidal oestrogen of the isoflavone class. We investigated the antibacterial ability of equol with respect to the growth rate, toxin production and spore-forming abilities of clostridioides difficile BI/027/NAP1. Methods and Results Isoflavones, or female hormones, were added to bacterial culture, which was grown at 35 degrees c. The absorbance of the culture was measured at various time points for evaluating the growth inhibition. The toxin levels in the media and morphological changes were also assessed. To evaluate the influence of equol on the sporulation of c. difficile, cells were collected at various time points from the equol-supplemented culture and the number of spores was counted. Our results show that equol inhibits bacterial growth in a concentration-dependent manner. However, it does not inhibit the production of toxin by c. difficile. Other isoflavones and female hormones did not inhibit the c. difficile growth. At the 14th day, approximately 600 spores were present in the control medium and only six were seen in the equol-containing medium. conclusion Our results suggest that equol may directly inhibit the c. difficile growth in a concentration-dependent manner and spore formation. Significance and Impact of the Study This is the first report on the antimicrobial ability of equol.

Microstructure and electromagnetic properties of LiFe5O8 ferrite ceramics prepared from wet- and dry-milled powders

The effect of dry and wet ball milling of LiFe5O8 ferrite powder on the microstructure and electromagnetic properties of ferrite ceramics was studied using XRD analysis, scanning electron microscopy, dilatometry, thermogravimetry, calorimetry, and measurement of specific magnetization and electrical resistance. The sintering temperature was 1050 degrees c;the sintering time was 2 h. It was found that ferrite fabricated from dry-milled powder exhibits an ordered alpha-LiFe5O8 phase with bulk density of 91%. Its saturation magnetization and curie temperature are 55 emu/g and 628 degrees c, respectively. Specific electrical resistance is 4.106 omega cm. Wet milling in isopropyl alcohol causes formation of a disordered 8-LiFe5O8 phase. ceramics produced by this method shows higher bulk density (97%) and low porosity, and an order of magnitude lower resistivity. Its saturation magnetization and curie temperature are 51 emu/g and 607 degrees c, respectively.

chemical synthesis of single-layer graphene by using ball milling compared with NaBH₄ and hydroquinone reductants

Graphene materials especially single-layer graphene have been identified as a new generation of nanomaterials having various potential applications in material industries. However, the synthesis procedure of single-layer graphene to improve its quality, size and amount has been still under research for commercial applications. The graphene oxide (GO) is synthesised from graphite by Hummer's spontaneous approach which is the most suitable reaction for a large-scale production. For the single-layer graphene, in this work, GO was exfoliated by using a ball milling in an inert atmosphere. Owing to using ball milling as intermediate treatment degreased oxygen functional groups and number of layers, it facilitates to synthesise graphene. Sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and hydroquinone were used as a reductant for the chemical conversion of the exfoliated GO to graphene. The results showed that due to the strong reduction feature, both reducing agents can be applied in the graphene production. As a preferred reductant, hydroquinone can be successfully applied for the synthesis of the single-layer graphene compared to NaBH4. The obtained graphene particles by two different chemicals were characterised by various analytical techniques. The big difference in the structure of GO and graphene was observed in transmission electron microscope analysis.

conformation and electronic structure of DNA in carbon nanotubes: a molecular dynamics and first-principles study

The conformation and electronic structure of DNA in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWcNT) were studied by combining molecular dynamics and first-principles methods. It was found that the orbital of the SWcNT inner wall induces a conformational change in single stranded DNA (ssDNA) and promotes the adsorption of general-sequence oligonucleotides on the inner walls of the SWcNTs due to - stacking interactions. Moreover, they found that the adsorbed oligonucleotides form a helix because of electrostatic and torsional interactions within the sugar-phosphate backbone.

Preparation and characterisation of cNF/MWcNT carbon aerogel as efficient adsorbents

In recent years, carbon aerogels have attracted much attention in basic research and as potential applications in many fields. Herein, the authors report a novel approach using bamboo powder as raw material to fabricate cellulose nanofibers (cNFs)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWcNTs) carbon aerogels by a simple dipping and carbonisation process. The developed material exhibits many exciting properties including low density (0.056 g cm(-3)), high porosity (95%), efficient capability for separation of oily droplets from water, and high adsorption capacity for a variety of oils and organic solvents by up to 110 times its own weight. Furthermore, the cNF/MWcNT carbon aerogels (cMcA) can be recycled many times by distillation and combustion, satisfying the requirements of practical oil-water separation. Taken together with its economical, environmentally benign manufacturing process, sustainability of the precursor and versatility of material, the cMcA developed in this study will be a promising candidate for addressing the problems arising from the spills of oily compounds.
