Butia fruit extract (Butia eriospatha) protects against oxidative damage and increases lifespan on caenorhabditis elegans

Butia (Butia eriospatha) is a fruit of a palm tree belonging to the family Arecaceae, native to South America. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of butia extract using caenorhabditis elegans as animal model. Initially, we performed survival experiments, reproduction, resistance to oxidative stress (post or pre-treatment with paraquat or hydrogen peroxide), longevity, superoxide dismutase, and catalase GFP reporters' expression. We observed that butia extract did not affect the worms' survival. Similarly, egg laying also showed no significant difference between treatments. None of the extract concentrations tested was able to significantly protect or reverse paraquat-induced oxidative stress. However, they were able to reverse the oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide. In addition, butia extract increased c. elegans lifespan under stress and not per se. Our results demonstrate that the Butia is able to extend the lifespan of the nematode c. elegans and that this effect may be mediated by an induced resistance to oxidative stress. Practical applications The practical applications of this research are to expand and bring scientific knowledge to the population about the benefits of the consumption of this native fruit from the southern region of Brazil. Many fruits and other plant foods are consumed and spread with benefits without proper scientific proof of these benefits. This fruit is widely cultivated and its production and consumption can be expanded from these results. Still, we point out that this is the first time that the benefits of this fruit are studied.

Background: Tudor-SN has been observed in lipid droplets, but its role in lipid homeostasis remains unclear. Results: Tudor-SN and PPAR are both regulated by c/EBP during adipogenesis and significantly influence the regulation of PPAR target genes. conclusion: Tudor-SN functions as a co-activator of PPAR in adipogenesis. Significance: The study has elucidated a new functional mechanism for the regulation of adipogenesis. Adipogenesis, in which mesenchymal precursor cells differentiate into mature adipocytes, is a well orchestrated process. In the present study we identified Tudor-SN as a novel co-activator of the transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR). We provide the first evidence that Tudor-SN and PPAR exist in the same complex. Both are up-regulated by the early factor c/EBP during adipogenesis and significantly influence the regulation of PPAR target genes in both 3T3-L1 pre-adipocyte and mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) upon exposure to a mixture of hormonal mixture. Moreover, aP2-PPAR response element (PPRE) interacts with both PPAR and Tudor-SN, and the gene transcriptional activation of PPRE-luc is enhanced by ectopic expression of Tudor-SN. Deletion of Tudor-SN protein (MEF-KO) affects but does not completely abolish the association of PPAR and aP2-PPRE. Loss-of-function studies further verified that Tudor-SN is required for adipogenesis, as deletion of Tudor-SN (MEF-KO) impairs dexamethasone, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, and insulin (DMI)-induced adipocyte differentiation and the expression of PPAR target genes, such as aP2 and adipsin. Furthermore, H3 acetylation levels were lower in MEF-KO than MEF-WT. Both HDAc1 and HDAc3 are stably associated with PPAR in MEF-KO, whereas only a small amount of association was observed in MEF-WT after 5 days of treatment during adipogenesis. Soil aggregation and aggregate-associated organic carbon under typical natural halophyte communities in arid saline areas of Northwest china

Information on the effects of halophyte communities on soil organic carbon(SOc)is useful for sequestrating c in arid *** this study,we identified four typical natural halophyte communities in the Manasi River Basin in Xinjiang Province,Northeast china,namely,Karelinia caspia(Pall.)Less.,Bassia dasyphylla(*** ***.)Kuntze,Haloxylon ammodendron(***.)Bunge,and Tamarix ramosissima *** compared soil aggregation and aggregated-associated SOc under these *** aggregate fraction of 0.053–0.25 mm accounted for 47%–75%of the total soil mass,significantly more than the>0.25 and<0.053 mm fractions,under all the halophyte *** differences in soil aggregate size distribution were observed among the plant communities,with the *** and *** communities showing the highest proportions of>0.25 mm aggregates(13.3%–43.8%)and *** community having more<0.053 mm aggregates(14.1%–27.2%).Aggregate-associated SOc concentrations were generally the highest in the>0.25 mm fraction,followed by the<0.053 mm fraction,and were the lowest in the 0.053–0.25 mm fraction;however,because of their large mass,0.25–0.053 mm aggregates contributed significantly more to the total *** SOc concentrations(0–60 cm depth)decreased in the order of ***(5.7 g kg^-1)>***(4.9 g kg^-1)>***(4.2 g kg^-1)>***(3.4 g kg^-1).The *** community had the highest total SOc and aggregate-associated SOc,which was primarily because aggregate-associated SOc content at the 0–10 and 10–20 cm depths under this community were higher than those under other plant *** *** community could be beneficial for increasing SOc in saline soils in the arid region.

comprehensive analysis of the effects of bending strain on GFET on ultra-flat flexible PI substrate using varnish PI

The study investigated how bending strain affected graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) that had been fabricated on ultra-flat flexible polyimide (PI) film, and the instability of graphene from repeated bending strain. An ultra-flat surface of PI film was achieved by using varnish PI with gradually increasing temperature. The average surface roughness was reduced from 23.23 to 0.32 nm. Bending strain distorted the symmetric atomic structure of graphene, and thereby caused a shift of two-dimensional peak by -42.67 cm(-1)/% in the Raman spectrum and acted such as uniaxial strain. Bending strain on the GFET increased its energy bandgap, and the increased energy bandgap decreased the off' current and increased the current on/off ratio. Bending strain increased carrier concentration and decreased carrier mobility. Repeated bending strain damaged graphene by increasing defects, and thereby increased its resistivity by approximate to 25%. The damage could be recovered by thermal annealing at 200 degrees c.

Surface Modification of NiW Alloy Substrates

We have studied the adsorption of elemental S on the surfaces of NiW alloy substrates where elementary sulfur was used as sulfur source. compared with those previous investigations which used H2S as the sulfur source and operated in an ultra-high vacuum chamber, we used elemental sulfur as the sulfur source which does not need an ultra-high vacuum chamber but Ar-H protection atmosphere in the process of sulfuration. After sulfuration, epitaxial LZO buffer layers were deposited on these substrates directly. The samples were investigated by means of AFM, XPS, SEM and XRD in this study. The results show that after sulfuration, S forms a c (2×2) structure at a coverage of 0.5 ML, in agreement with previous results, representing the effectiveness of elemental sulfur during the sulfuration process. The c (2×2)-S superstructure on the surface of the NiW substrates has optimized the La2Zr2O7(LZO) buffer layer texture.

crack growth behaviour of P92 steel under creep and creep-fatigue conditions

High temperature creep and creep-fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on standard compact specimens machined from ASME P92 steel pipe. The effects of various loading conditions on crack growth behaviours were investigated. crack initiation time was found to decrease with the increasing initial stress intensity factor under creep condition and further to decrease by the introduction of fatigue condition. For creep test, the crack growth rate can be well characterised by the facture mechanics parameter c*. For creep-fatigue test, the crack growth behaviour is dominated by the cycle dependent fatigue process when the hold time is shorter, but it becomes dominated by the time dependent creep process when the hold time becomes longer.

Plasticizers such as Bisphenol A (BPA) are highly persistent organic pollutants that are present in raw water as well as in effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) at levels of parts per trillion (ng L-1) with a high potential to cause carcinogenic and teratogenic effects in the aquatic environment. This research aimed to evaluate the potential of catalytic oxidation to treat BPA with a novel iron boride (Fe2B) magnetic nanocatalyst. Several techniques were used for the catalyst characterization: X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), particle size analysis, and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Experimental results indicated complete BPA degradation with Fe2B nanocatalyst where the operating conditions are BPA = 1 mg/L, pHo = 3.0, T = 25 degrees c, t = 120 min, and Fe2B = 0.01 g/L. The investigation of the catalytic mechanism showed that hydroxil radicals in the bulk solution are the dominant reactive species in the BPA degradation. Moreover, the removal efficiency did not decrease after 3 times usage of Fe2B nanocatalyst, which reveals its excellent reusability. The acute toxicity results of Fe2B indicated that the toxicity depended on the exposure time, the catalyst concentration, and the type of selected test organism. Thus, the laboratory-scale tests resulted that the synthesized Fe2B can be used as an effective catalyst for the treatment of BPA.

Herein we electrochemically and selectively extract Ti from the MAX phase Ti2Sc to form carbon/sulfur (c/S) nanolaminates at room temperature. The products are composed of multi-layers of c/S flakes, with predominantly amorphous and some graphene-like structures. covalent bonding between c and S is observed in the nanolaminates, which render the latter promising candidates as electrode materials for Li-S batteries. We also show that it is possible to extract Ti from other MAX phases, such as Ti3Alc2, Ti3Snc2, and Ti2Gec, suggesting that electrochemical etching can be a powerful method to selectively extract the M elements from the MAX phases, to produce AX layered structures, that cannot be made otherwise. The latter hold promise for a variety of applications, such as energy storage, catalysis, etc.

A high-speed optical switch based on an ultraviolet sensitive surface channel MESFET fabricated on polycrystalline diamond has been developed. Saturation response to a nanosecond pulsed excimer laser has been demonstrated. Such an opaque gate three-terminal device is suitable for power applications where electromagnetic interference on power control interfaces is not negligible.

High dose implantation in 6H-Sic

The phase formation in 6H-Sic due to high dose implantation was studied as function of temperature by means of transmission electron microscopy. Two examples demonstrate the feasibility of ion beam synthesis of crystalline phases in 6H-Sic which are epitaxially aligned with the surrounding matrix. In the first example Al(+) ions were implanted up to concentrations of 15 at% at temperatures between RT and 800 degreesc. The precipitation of carbon phases due to high dose c(+) implantation in 6H-Sic at temperatures between 300 degreesc and 900 degreesc was investigated in the second example.
