The irreversibility lines of silver-sheathed (Bi,Pb) 2 Sr 2 ca 2 cu 3 O 10 (Bi-2223), (Tl,Pb,Bi)(Sr,Ba) 2 ca 2 cu 3 O 9 (Tl-1223) and (Tl,Pb)Sr 2 ca 3 cu 4 O 11 (Tl-1234) superconducting tapes were investigated and compared with those of other superconducting systems. We have demonstrated that the shape of the irreversibility lines of Tl-1223 and Tl-1234 superconducting tapes are similar in behavior to those of YBa 2 cu 3 O 7 (Y-123) and (Tl,Pb)Sr 2 (ca,Y)cu 2 O 7 (Tl-1212) systems and better than those of Tl 2 Ba 2 ca 2 cu 3 O 10 (Tl-2223) and (Bi,Pb) 2 Sr 2 ca 2 cu 3 O 10 (Bi-2223) superconductors. This means that the flux pinning ability of Tl-1223 and Tl-1234 superconducting tapes was stronger than that of Bi-2223 and Tl-2223 superconductors. The possible reason for controlling flux pinning can be attributed to the intrinsic crystal structure difference in the materials.

Encapsulation of methane in nanotube bundles

In this study, the authors investigate methane storage, and in particular the binding and suction energies of methane in (8, 8) carbon and (10, 10) silicon nanotube bundles. Employing the Lennard-Jones potential together with the continuous approximation, they determine the interaction energy, molecular force and suction energy for a methane molecule in nanotube bundles. The authors approximate the methane molecule by assuming that the four hydrogen atoms are smeared over a spherical surface of a certain radius with the carbon atom located at the centre of the sphere. This is an important assumption in terms of simplifying the calculation, since with this model the particular orientations of the hydrogen atoms do not enter the calculation. Their results indicate that silicon nanostructures may be superior candidates for methane storage at high temperatures, particularly in the range 200-400 K.

contrasting expression patterns of ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein transcription factors in the hair follicle and at different stages of the hair growth cycle

Hair follicles undergo repeated cycles of growth and regression, throughout the entire life of the organism. These dynamic changes require closely co-ordinated regulation of gene expression. The ccAAT/enhancer-binding proteins are a family of basic region/leucine zipper transcription factors that regulate gene transcription in various tissues. They have been implicated in epidermal differentiation and may therefore play an important role in the hair follicle. We have investigated the localization of four members of this family-ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha, -beta, and -delta, and Gadd153-in both human and murine hair follicles by immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, we examined ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha, -beta, and -delta immunoreactivity at different stages of the depilation-induced murine hair growth cycle. Distinct immunoreactivity patterns for ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha, -beta and -delta, and Gadd153 were observed in the outer root sheath, sebaceous gland, dermal papilla, and connective tissue sheath of human anagen hair follicles. In murine follicles, ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha was expressed in the outer root sheath, sebaceous gland, and dermal papilla, whereas ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-beta expression was confined to the matrix, sebaceous gland, and inner and outer root sheaths. Both ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha and -beta were upregulated during anagen, then down-regulated in catagen follicles. In contrast, ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-delta showed no hair cycle-dependent variation in immunoreactivity. These data suggests that the expression of ccAAT/enhancer-binding protein-alpha and -beta may, in turn, play a part in regulating hair cycle-dependent gene expression. To determine if marsupials show a pattern of acclimation similar to placentals the thermal balance for the marsupial D. byrnei was measured over a range of ambient temperatures in both warm- (***. c) and cold-acclimated (***. c) animals. A time-course for acclimation was also determined. Heat production, conductance and evaporative heat loss all rose significantly during cold adaptation. The response of cold-acclimated D. byrnei to a test temperature of ***. c was found to alter within 7 days of continuous exposure to a higher temperature regime. These results were similar to those found for placentals. The mechanisms of increased thermogenesis during acclimation are discussed in the light of the apparent absence of BAT [brown adipose tissue] in marsupials.

Immune complexes of BSA[bovine serum albumin]-anti BSA (Ig[immunoglobulin]G F(ab'')2) will activate human complement [c] by the alternate pathway. The c3 bound to these complexes binds to human peripheral blood mononuclear cells which bear c receptors. This interaction is visualized by fluoresceinated antigen (BSA-FITc [fluorescein isothiocyanate]) or fluorescein conjugated antisera directed at c3. The assay appears to be more sensitive than the usual IgMEAc [erythrocyte, IgM antibody, c] rosette technique and correlates well with the rosette method.

climate-driven shifts in kelp forest composition reduce carbon sequestration potential

The potential contribution of kelp forests to blue carbon sinks is currently of great interest but interspecific variance has received no attention. In the temperate Northeast Atlantic, kelp forest composition is changing due to climate-driven poleward range shifts of cold temperate Laminaria digitata and Laminaria hyperborea and warm temperate Laminaria ochroleuca. To understand how this might affect the carbon sequestration potential (cSP) of this ecosystem, we quantified interspecific differences in carbon export and decomposition alongside changes in detrital photosynthesis and biochemistry. We found that while warm temperate kelp exports up to 71% more carbon per plant, it decomposes up to 155% faster than its boreal congeners. Elemental stoichiometry and polyphenolic content cannot fully explain faster carbon turnover, which may be attributable to contrasting tissue toughness or unknown biochemical and structural defenses. Faster decomposition causes the detrital photosynthetic apparatus of L. ochroleuca to be overwhelmed 20 days after export and lose integrity after 36 days, while detritus of cold temperate species maintains carbon assimilation. Depending on the photoenvironment, detrital photosynthesis could further exacerbate interspecific differences in decomposition via a potential positive feedback loop. Through compositional change such as the predicted prevalence of L. ochroleuca, ocean warming may therefore reduce the cSP of such temperate marine forests.

USE OF cOAL-TAR PITcH IN cARBON cARBON cOMPOSITES

Unidirectional carbon fibre has been infiltrated with pyrocarbon. The carbon skeletons obtained were densified several times by using coal-tar pitch. During heat treatment up to 2470 K the behaviour of two types of carbon fibre skeleton was considered. Microstructure and crystal structure of cTP carbon and pyrocarbon were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. This study details the preparation of c c composites by combining two methods: chemical vapour deposition and liquid impregnation with pitch. High tensile strength fibres are suitable for c c composites.

Hybrid graphene aerogel intermedium for bendable supercapacitor electrode

Porous structure materials indicate brilliant distribution and great absorption ability, that suggesting the potential application of aerogel state graphene based materials. Aerogel intermedium assisted method was developed and optimised to prepare bendable electrode. Hydrothermal schedule was utilised suggesting potential application at low cost and large-scale factory print issues, rather than consuming high money cost and long labour time. Nickel sulphide has been anchored onto the graphene aerogels via one-pot hydrothermal method. The membrane electrode was made with the carbon ink and aerogel intermedium on the Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) plate. The bendable electrode was fabricated with intermedium and commercial carbon ink, and indicates good performance and economic consumption. The complex membrane capacitor shows the much more brilliant performance than the pure carbon membrane capacitor, with specific capacitance (31.40 mF/cm(2) at 4 mV/s and 17.74 mF/cm(2) at 2 mA/cm(2)).

Integrated carbon spheres on nickel foam as electrode for supercapacitors

Integrated carbon spheres in the manner of agglomerate of joined ones were grown on nickel foam substrates by a hydrothermal technique, which could be directly used as an electrode for supercapacitors. This avoided the exploitation of adhesive and thereby significantly decreased the resistance of the electrode. The electrode exhibited a rectangular cyclic voltammogram even at a high scan rate of 10 mV/s and its specific capacitance was as high as 196.43 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g.

Efficient second-harmonic power extraction from GaAs TUNNETT diodes above 200GHz

GaAs TUNNETT diodes on diamond heat sinks yielded state-of-the-art RF power levels of 9 and > 4mW with corresponding Dc-to-RF conversion efficiencies of > 1.0 and > 0.6% in a second-harmonic mode at 209 and 235GHz, respectively. The phase noise was well below -94dBc/Hz at a carrier frequency of 500kHz. Simulations revealed a varactor-like mode of operation.
