cylindrical Geometry Verification Problem for Enclosure Radiation

The development of a manufactured solution for enclosure radiation in an infinitely long circular cylinder with a nonparticipating medium is presented. This solution is then used to verify the correct implementation of the commonly used discrete enclosure equations. The circular cross section is approximated by a faceted geometry;the numbers of facets used are 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128. The crossed-string method, which is exact in this application, is used to compute the view factors. computational results using six levels of grid refinement suggest that the error norm between the integral equation solution and the discrete equation solution behaves as h(2) where h is a characteristic mesh size.

High glucose reduced the egg-laying rate of the nematode caenorhabditis elegans and was dependent on serotonergic signaling. Antidiabetic drugs of the biguanide and thiazolidine classes ameliorated the detrimental effect of glucose on egg-laying rate, suggesting the possibility that this quick and easy assay system may be applicable to whole-animal screening for novel antidiabetic drugs, at least, of these classes.

The forces of interaction between proteins adsorbed onto mica have been measured as a function of the distance of separation between the two mica surfaces in aqueous solutions. The results for three proteins, myelin basic protein, concanavalin A and cytochrome c, are presented together with the results for a model basic protein, poly(L-lysine). With the exception of cytochrome c at large separations, the forces of interaction are due to charges on the protein surfaces and may be fitted closely to theoretical predictions. For cytochrome c, however, no long-range electrical repulsion is observed, indicating that the negatively charged mica surface has been neutralised by the adsorption of the positively charged protein. At short surface separations, an attraction between the protein surfaces was noted. For concanavalin A, a weak attraction was observed in the presence of calcium and manganese ions only. For poly(L-lysine) and cytochrome c the attraction can be explained simply in terms of van der Waals interactions between the proteins. However, for myelin basic protein the observed attraction was an order of magnitude larger than that predicted by van der Waals theory. We believe that this additional attraction may be due to hydrophobic interactions between the adsorbed myelin basic protein molecules.

.beta.-Fructosidase exists as soluble and wall-bound forms in radish seedling. As an artefactual wall location of several enzymes was reported, immunocytochemical localization and biochemical investigations were used to demonstrate an effective wall binding of .beta.-fructosidase in vivo. Most of .beta.-fructosidase activity is associated with the wall in the radish seedling axis under far-red light, but soluble enzyme activity is higher than wall-bound activity in this organ from etiolated axes or in cotyledons from light grown seedlings. covalently wall-bound .beta.-fructosidase activity, low in every case precited, also increases under far-red light. From in vitro wall reassociation studies it appears that these differences in enzyme location between soluble and wall-bound forms are not linked to changes in wall binding capacity;ionic binding sites of this structure are, in the same range, greatly in excess from cotyledons or axes preparations. The carbohydrate part of the enzyme is not involved in .beta.-fructosidase wall association at least through interactions with characterized lectins. An appropriate procedure to solubilize a stable ionically bound form from the wall is described. This procedure could be applied to further comparative studies on structure of soluble and wall-bound forms of .beta.-fructosidase.

Modified carbon black/nylon 6 fibres with excellent antistatic and mechanical properties

Nylon 6 (PA6) fibre has many advantages such as high strength, wear resistance, light weight, and good elasticity. However, PA6 fibre is prone to deformation in use and the antistatic ability is poor. In this Letter, the dispersion of carbon black (cB) was improved by physical methods and then added to the nylon 6 (PA6). The authors had studied that the dispersion of modified and unmodified cB in PA6 fibres with excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. The results of Zeta potential and particle size test showed that the size of the cB particle modified was decreased and the absolute value of Zeta potential on the surface was increased. The results of scanning electron microscopy showed that the cB had a good dispersion in PA6;the results of thermogravimetric and Fourier transform infrared analysis showed that polystyrene sodium sulphonate was successfully coated on the surface of cB;when 5% modified cB was added in PA6 fibres, the mechanical properties of PA6 were hold up well. Interestingly, when 5% cB modified was added in PA6 fibres, the resistance of cB modified/PA6 fibre with excellent mechanical properties was reached up to 4.89 X 10(11) Omega.

Observation of second flexural mode enhancement in graphene resonators

The enhancement of the second flexural mode in a monolayer graphene resonator by an inhomogeneous electrostatic actuation force has been observed. The devices have been fabricated by transferring the graphene onto a poly-Si/SiO2/Si substrate whereby the poly-Si has been released to produce graphene resonators. Enhancement of the second harmonic has been demonstrated by varying the actuation voltage, achieving an amplitude enhancement of up to 95% of the fundamental mode. The reported findings open new perspectives for graphene resonant sensors with enhanced sensitivity.

Graphene self-switching diode-based thermoelectric rectifier

This Letter demonstrates thermoelectric rectification in graphene self-switching diode (GSSD) on SiO2/Si substrate. Nanometre-scale nonlinear semiconductor device, called self-switching diode (SSD), has been utilised. Applied bias leads to a change in potential profile and effective channel width of GSSD resulting in diode like I-V characters. The excellent electronic properties of graphene potentially make it suitable for producing SSD's with high responsivity and low noise equivalent power (NEP). The designed GSSD demonstrates a high Seebeck coefficient (S) of 200 mu V/K voltage detection sensitivity, and NEP of 97.964 V/W and 0.6064 nW/Hz(1/2), respectively. Furthermore, the effect of applying backgate voltage on the Seebeck coefficient has also been demonstrated in this work. The GSSD is presented as a potential thermoelectric rectifier, which can convert the thermal energy into useful electrical energy.

Estimation of the dimension of micropores and mesopores in single walled carbon nanotubes using the method Horvath-Kawazoe, Saito and Foley and BJH equations

The adsorption isotherm of the single walled carbon nanotubes (cNTs) is measured. The mathematical models for calculating pore size distribution (PSD) are modified. The PSD of sample is determined using Horvath-Kawazoe (KH), Saito and Foley (SF) and Barrett-Joyner- Halenda (BJH) methods. An average potential function has been determined inside the slit-like and cylindrical pores. Since all of the regions of cNTs have same type that adsorbed nitrogen in the same conditions, the calculated PSDs from HK, SF and BJH models have same trend in both interior and exterior surfaces. By adding the adsorption term on outer surface, HK, SF and BJH models have been developed hence the pore volume increased.

Vibration analysis of viscoelastic carbon nanotubes

The vibration behaviour of a simply supported carbon nanotube is studied using the non-local viscoelasticity theory, including the thermal and foundation effects. The complex frequency in closed-form expression is obtained in terms of the damping ratio. The frequency is associated with the non-local parameter, damping coefficient and thermal and foundation effects. According to the analysis, the natural frequency significantly decreases by increasing the damping coefficient, especially at a small non-local parameter. The critical damping coefficient decreases when the thermal effect is considered in the analysis, especially at a higher non-local parameter. However, the situation is reversed when the foundation effect is considered. In addition, by increasing the non-local parameter, the mode shape increases. However, the mode shape apparently decreases by increasing the damping coefficient.

Transparent thin-film transistor and diode circuit using graphene and amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide active layer

A transparent thin-film transistor-diode (TFT-diode) circuit through the serial connection of a transparent TFT and a transparent graphene diode comprised of an amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) active layer and a graphene electrode are demonstrated. Through transferring the graphene electrode onto the fabricated TFT, the TFT operates in a single direction due to the directional operation of the transparent graphene diode. The resulting transparent TFT-diode device can be applied to transparent a-IGZO and graphene integrated circuits.
