Design of geosynthetic-reinforced slopes in cohesive backfills

currently, geosynthetic reinforcements for slopes are calculated assuming the ground strength to be purely frictional, i.e. without any cohesion. However, accounting for the presence of even a modest amount of cohesion could allow using locally available cohesive soils as backfills to a greater extent and less overall reinforcement. But cohesive soils are subject to the formation of cracks that tend to reduce slope stability so their presence has to be accounted for in the design of the slope reinforcement. In the paper, limit analysis was employed to derive a semi-analytical method for uniform c - phi slopes that provides the amount of reinforcement needed as a function of ground cohesion, tensile strength, angle of shearing resistance and of the slope inclination. Both climate induced cracks as well as cracks that form as part of the slope collapse mechanism are accounted for. Design charts providing the value of the required reinforcement strength and embedment length are plotted for both uniform and linearly increasing reinforcement distributions. From the results, it emerges that accounting for the presence of cohesion allows significant savings on the reinforcement to be made, and that cracks are often significantly detrimental to slope stability so they cannot be overlooked in the design calculations. We provide concrete evidence that floating-point computations in c programs can be verified in a homogeneous verification setting based on coq only, by evaluating the practicality of the combination of the formal semantics of compcert clight and the Flocq formal specification of IEEE 754 floating-point arithmetic for the verification of properties of floating-point computations in c programs. To this end, we develop a framework to automatically compute real-number expressions of c floating-point computations with rounding error terms along with their correctness proofs. We apply our framework to the complete analysis of an energy-efficient c implementation of a radar image processing algorithm, for which we provide a certified bound on the total noise introduced by floating-point rounding errors and energy-efficient approximations of square root and sine.

Bunchosia glandulifera belongs to the family Malpighiaceae and is popularly known as “caferana” in the city of Santo Antonio da Patrulha. The fruits have a high economic value and their inclusion in the diet has health benefits. They are natural sources of antioxidants because of the presence of bioactive compounds. However, their chemical composition can be influenced by the maturation process. This study aims to evaluate the changes in the bioactive antioxidant compounds in the pulp and seeds of B. glandulifera fruit during different stages of ripening. The fruits, were analyzed for caffeine, carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamin c, and total phenolic content as well as for antioxidant activity, at four different stages of ripening. An increase in bioactive compounds was observed from the second maturation stage to the ripened fruit, and the ripened fruit had the highest bioactive compound content. Phenolic compound and carotenoid levels were found to be highest in the pulp. carotenoid content showed a positive correlation with the antioxidant activity. colorimetric analysis also showed a high correlation between the levels of carotenoids and color change during the ripening stages.

目的探讨黄芩素-7-甲醚对高原缺氧诱导小鼠心肌组织损伤的保护作用。方法将40只雄性BALB/c小鼠随机分为正常对照组(注射用水灌胃)、缺氧模型组(注射用水灌胃)、芦丁组(500mg/kg灌胃)和黄芩素-7-甲醚组(500mg/kg灌胃),每组10只。除正常对照组外,其余3组均置于模拟高原环境8000m条件下缺氧12h。然后所有小鼠均眼眶采血,测定血清乳酸脱氢酶(LDH)和肌酸激酶(cK)活性;最后处死小鼠取心肌组织,检测过氧化氢(H2O2)和丙二醛(MDA)含量,测定超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、过氧化氢酶(cAT)和谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GSH-Px)的活性,同时检测核因子红细胞2相关因子2(Nrf2)及血红素加氧酶1(HO-1)的表达水平。结果与正常对照组比较,缺氧模型组血清cK和LDH活性升高,心肌组织H2O2和MDA含量升高,心肌组织SOD、cAT和GSH-Px活性降低,心肌组织Nrf2和HO-1表达升高(P<0.01)。与缺氧模型组比较,芦丁组和黄芩素-7-甲醚组血清cK和LDH活性降低,心肌组织H2O2和MDA含量降低,心肌组织SOD、cAT和GSH-Px活性升高,心肌组织Nrf2和HO-1蛋白表达进一步升高(P<0.01)。结论黄芩素-7-甲醚对模拟高原缺氧导致的心肌组织损伤具有一定的保护作用,机制可能与清除自由基、激活Nrf2/HO-1信号途径、提高抗氧化酶活性、降低机体氧化应激水平有关.

conceptualization of Military’s common Operation Picture for the Enhancement of Disaster Preparedness and Response during Emergency and communication Blackout

The military’s common operation picture (cOP) is the concept where situation awareness is created before the eyes of high ranking commanders who gather remotely in a command and control headquarters to provide imperative advices and to make decision upon the emergency mission carried out by on-site soldiers. The underlying rationale is to integrate relevant technologies in order to enhance the situation awareness for disaster preparedness and quick response to emergency and communication blackout. The objective of the concept is to apply the cOP created by combined geospatial and serious game for modelling military in-field operations during an incident of lacking communications. The paper explains the project initiated in the Defence Technology Institute that covers the plan to implement the integration of communications, military simulation and training, and unmanned vehicle technologies for the emerging situation awareness to be viewed from the cOP. It will house current data and information of rescuer positions, images and live videos. In the commissioned vehicle, a dedicated map server is to host in-coming disparate data that has gone through digital image and video processing. For the cOP display, Game Engine will play as a theatre that all data interacts in a common and easy-to-understand view.

cutaneous manifestations of hepatitis c in the era of new antiviral agents

The association of chronic hepatitis c virus(HcV) infection with a wide spectrum of cutaneous manifestations has been widely reported in the literature, with varying strength of epidemiological association. Skin diseases which are certainly related with chronic HcV infection due to a strong epidemiological and pathogenetic association are mixed cryoglobulinemia, lichen planus and porphyria cutanea tarda. chronic pruritus and necrolytic acral erythema are conditions that may share a possible association with HcV infection, while several immune-mediated inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis, chronic urticaria and vitiligo, have been only anecdotally reported in the setting of chronic HcV infection. Traditional interferonbased treatment regimens for HcV infection are associated with substantial toxicity and a high-risk of immune-related adverse events, while the advent of new direct-acting antivirals with sustained virological response and improved tolerability will open the door for all-oral, interferon-free regimens. In the new era of these direct acting antivirals there will be hopefully a renewed interest in extra-hepatic manifestations of HcV infection. The aim of the present paper is to review the main cutaneous HcV-related disorders- mixed cryoglobulinemia, lichen planus, porphyria cutanea tarda and chronic pruritus- and to discuss the potential impact of new antiviral treatments on the course of these extrahepatic manifestations of chronic HcV infection.

Transgenic mouse technology has enabled the investigation of the pathogenic effects, including those on development, immunological reactions and carcinogenesis, of viral genes directly in living organism in a real-time manner. Although viral hepatocarcinogenesis comprises multiple sequences of pathological events, that is, chronic necroinflammation and the subsequent regeneration of hepatocytes that induces the accumulation of genetic alterations and hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc), the direct action of viral proteins also play significant roles. The pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus X and hepatitis c virus(HcV) core genes has been extensively studied by virtue of their functions as a transactivator and a steatosis inducer, respectively. In particular, the mechanism of steatosis in HcV infection and its possible association with Hcc has been well studied using HcV core gene transgenic mouse models. Although transgenic mouse models have remarkable advantages, they are intrinsically accompanied by some drawbacks when used to study human diseases. Therefore, the results obtained from transgenic mouse studies should be carefully interpreted in the context of whether or not they are well associated with human pathogenesis.

High encapsulation efficiency of [email protected] @shell structured carbon-based magnetic ternary nanohybrids have been synthesized in high yield by chemical vapor deposition of acetylene directly over octahedral-shaped Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. By controlling the pyrolysis temperature, Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 3 [email protected] nanotubes (cNTs) and [email protected] 3 [email protected] ternary nanohybrids could be selectively produced. The optimal RL values for the as-prepared ternary nanohybrids could reach up to ca. −46.7, −52.7 and −29.5 dB, respectively. The excellent microwave absorption properties of the obtaiend ternary nanohybrids were proved to ascribe to the quarter-wavelength matching model. Moreover, the as-prepared [email protected] 3 [email protected] ternary nanohybrids displayed remarkably enhanced EM wave absorption capabilities compared to Fe 3 O 4 @Fe 3 [email protected] due to their excellent dielectric loss abilities, good complementarities between the dielectric loss and the magnetic loss, and high attenuation constant. Generally, this strategy can be extended to explore other categories of [email protected] or [email protected] @shell structured carbon-based nanohybrids, which is very beneficial to accelerate the advancements of high performance MAMs.

Importance of virological response in the early stage of telaprevir-based triple therapy for hepatitis c

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of virological response(VR) to telaprevir(TVR)-based triple therapy in predicting treatment outcome of hepatitis ***: This prospective, multicenter study consisted of 253 Japanese patients infected with hepatitis c virus(HcV) genotype 1b. All received 12 wk of TVR in combination with 24 wk of pegylatedinterferon-α(IFN-α) and ribavirin. Serum HcV RNA was tested at weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24. VR was defined as undetectable serum HcV RNA. Sustained virological response(SVR) was VR at 24 wk after the end of treatment and was regarded as a successful ***: Of 253 patients, 207(81.8%) achieved SVR. The positive predictive value of VR for SVR was 100% at week 2, after which it gradually decreased, and was over 85% to week 12. The negative predictive value(NPV) gradually increased, reaching 100% at week 12. The upslope of the NPV showed a large increase from week 4(40.6%) to week 6(82.4%). There was a moderate concordance between the SVR and VR at week 6(kappa coefficient = 0.44), although other VRs had poor concordance to SVR. Multiple logistic regression analysis extracted VR at week 6(P < 0.0001, OR = 63.8) as an independent factor contributing to SVR. In addition, the interleukin-28 B single nucleotide polymorphism and response to previous pegylated-IFN-α and ribavirin therapy were identified as independent factors for ***: VR at week 6, but not at week 4, is an efficient predictor of both SVR and non-SVR to TVRbased triple therapy.

Titanium-carbide Formation at Defective curved Graphene-Titanium Interfaces

Physical and chemical properties of graphene-metal interfaces have been largely examined with the objective of producing nanostructured carbon-based electronic devices. Although electronic properties are key to such devices, appropriate structural, thermal and mechanical properties are important for device performance as well. One of the most studied is the graphene-titanium (G-Ti) interface. Titanium is a low density, high strength versatile metal that can form alloys with desirable properties for applications ranging from aerospace to medicine. Small clusters and thin films of titanium deposited on graphene have also been examined. However, while some experiments show that thin films of titanium on graphene can be removed without damaging graphene hexagonal structure, others reported the formation of titanium-carbide (Tic) at G-Ti interfaces. In a previous work [AcS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, 2017, 9 (38), pp 33288-33297], we have shown that pristine G-Ti interfaces are resilient to large thermal fluctuations even when G-Ti structures lie on curved or kinked substrates. Here, using classical molecular dynamics with the third-generation charge Optimized Many Body (cOMB3) potential, we show that di-interstitial defective G-Ti structures on a copper substrate with a relatively large curvature kink, present signs of Tic formation. This result might help explain the different experimental results mentioned above.
