P-doping decrease and mobility increase of graphene in atmosphere

An approach to decrease the P-doping density of graphene and increase the mobility of graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) is reported. With a layer of natural aluminium oxide (natural-AlOx) thin film covered on the surface of graphene, the Dirac point voltage of the GFETs decreases 25 V while it experiences the mobility increase of 42 cm(2)/(V s) after exposure in the atmosphere for 1 month. To understand this phenomenon, other two situations are researched, the Dirac point voltage of the identical GFETs with no thin film on graphene increases more than 15 V and its mobility decreases 90 cm(2)/(V s) after 1 month. The last situation is that the Dirac point voltage and the mobility have no significant changes with an AlOx deposited by electron beam evaporation (Al2O3-EBE) on graphene. These phenomena indicate that the natural-AlOx thin film is capable of reducing p-type impurities on the graphene and bringing the better reliability to the GFETs.

Purpose: To compare the stability of stable and unstable water-in-oil emulsions and the efficacy and safety of these emulsions in a single-center, prospective double-blind trial of transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma (Hcc). Materials and Methods: A total of 812 patients with inoperable Hcc were randomized (stable emulsion, n = 402;unstable emulsion, n = 410). The 2 emulsions were prepared by using the same protocol except that different solvents were used for chemotherapy agents, including epirubicin, lobaplatin, and mitomycin c. The solvent in the stable emulsion arm was contrast medium and distilled water, and the solvent in the unstable emulsion arm was distilled water. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS), and secondary endpoints were time to progression (TTP), tumor response, adverse events (AEs), and plasma epirubicin concentrations. Results: In vitro, stable emulsions did not occur until 1 day, and unstable emulsions, with a lower peak plasma concentration (P = .001) in vivo, exhibited rapid separation of the oil and aqueous phases after 10 minutes. Median OS times in the stable and unstable emulsion arms were 17.7 and 19.2 months, respectively (P = .81). No differences were found in 1.1P, tumor response, and AEs except for myelosuppression (anemia, 3.5% vs 7.6%;thrombocytopenia, 11.5% vs 17.7%), which was significantly more severe and frequent in the unstable emulsion arm (P = .013). conclusions: chemoembolization is equally effective with the use of stable and unstable emulsions, but the use of a stable emulsion has the advantage of less myelosuppression and a favorable pharmacokinetic profile.

Biostimulant activity of humic-like substances from agro-industrial waste on chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda

The use of microalgae in a number of sectors, including biodiesel, feed and food production, is proving to be of great interest. An evaluation was made of the possible biostimulant effects on chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda of humic-like substances (HLs) extracted from agro-industrial wastes. These included digestate from the waste of an agro-livestock farm (D-HL), oil extraction residues from rape (B-HL, Brassica napus L.) and tomato residues (T-HL). The microalgal growth medium (BG11) was supplemented with HLs to evaluate their effect on biomass yield as well as carbohydrate, chlorophylls a and b, lipid and fatty acid contents. Our results showed that the HLs used in the test are effective biostimulants of c. vulgaris and S. quadricauda. The biostimulant effect seems to depend on the type of extract used for cultivating the microalgae, the concentration and the species treated. Among the extracts applied to the growth medium, D-HL and T-HL seem to have a significant effect on microalgal biomass and lipid production. Although B-HL showed no significant effect on the biomass and lipid content of c. vulgaris and S. quadricauda, its presence in the growth medium increased the saturated:unsaturated fatty acid ratio (SFA/UFA) and stimulated the sugar metabolism of the microalgae by increasing their carbohydrate and chlorophyll content.

Hepatic Amiodarone Lipotoxicity Is Ameliorated by Genetic and Pharmacological Inhibition of Endoplasmatic Reticulum Stress

Amiodarone is a commonly used antiarrhythmic drug and can cause liver steatosis. We investigated the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress/unfolded protein response in the pathogenesis of amiodarone-induced steatosis. Amiodarone-induced liver injury was obtained by 1 intraperitoneal injection to wild-type (WT) or c/EBP homologous protein knock-out mice (Ddit3(-/-)). Amiodarone directly reduced intracellular ATP and ca2+ in hepatocytes invitro, inducing ER stress and lipid accumulation. In vivo, amiodarone-driven liver damage and lipid accumulation was accompanied by activation of ER stress/unfolded protein response, as demonstrated by up-regulation of genes encoding key ER stress mediators and by phosphorylation of eIF2 alpha. In contrast to WT mice, Ddit3(-/-) mice were protected from amiodarone-induced ER stress and lipid accumulation. Importantly, amiodarone-induced lipid accumulation was not mediated by de novo hepatic lipogenesis, increased adipose tissue lipolysis or increased hepatic uptake of triglycerides or free fatty acids. Rather, amiodarone strongly increased hepatic mRNA expression of lipid droplet proteins, particularly cidea and cidec, in WT, but less so in Ddit3(-/-) mice, suggesting a link between ER stress and increased triglyceride storage. Moreover, while insulin attenuated amiodarone-induced phosphorylation of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) in WT, it did not affect pHSL in Ddit3(-/-), indicating increased lipolysis and therefore reduced lipid accumulation in these mice. Finally, ER stress attenuation using 2 different pharmacological chaperones reduced lipid accumulation, accompanied by reduced mRNA expression of cidec. In conclusion, amiodarone-induced ER stress drives liver steatosis and may be considered for therapeutic targeting.

Buckling analysis of a cantilever single-walled carbon nanotube embedded in an elastic medium with an attached spring

The buckling analysis of a cantilever single-walled carbon nanotube embedded in an elastic medium with an attached spring is researched. The effects of axial compression load, attached spring, small size and surrounding elastic medium are taken into account at the same time. Theoretical formulation is carried out on the basis of the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory in conjunction with Eringen ' s non-local elasticity theory. Fourier sine series is selected for the simulation of single-walled carbon nanotube deflections. Winkler elastic foundation type is used to simulate the interaction between single-walled carbon nanotube and elastic medium. 2 x 2 coefficient matrix is derived with the aid of applying Stokes ' transformation to corresponding non-local boundary conditions. The critical buckling loads are calculated by using this coefficient matrix. Different validation studies are performed to endorse and corroborate the usefulness of the presented analytical method.

Synthesis of vertical graphene flowers as a photoelectrocatalyst for organic degradation

Three-dimensional vertical graphene flowers were fabricated using a simple, low-cost, and efficient chemical vapour deposition method with Ni(NO3)(2) as a catalyst precursor and methane as a carbon precursor. Graphene flowers of up to 10 mu m in size with petals of two to seven layers of graphene were obtained. The growth of the vertically aligned graphene flowers was attributed to a columnar growth mechanism. Numerous micropores were observed between the flower petals and irregular mesopores were observed in the interconnected flowers. The charge-transfer resistance of a graphene flower/Ta film was 30.8 Omega. The graphene flowers acted as charge carriers, reducing the charge recombination rate and enhancing electron transport. The vertical graphene flowers showed significant photoelectrocatalytic activity for the degradation of phenol.

Prion diseases are a group of animal and human neurodegenerative, albeit transmissible diseases. The lack of effective preventive and therapeutic approaches represents a serious problem in their management. This is especially true for those prion diseases of animals which behave like infectious and contagious diseases. In the case of sheep scrapie, the well- known role of variations in the prion protein gene (PRNP) in conferring resistance/susceptibility represents an opportunity which has been exploited to select populations genetically resistant to the disease. The recent description of camel prion disease (cPrD) in Algeria and Tunisia and the suspicion falling into the category of infectious prion diseases, make urgent to investigate the possible existence of genetic determinants useful for its control. Herein, we investigated PRNP variability in 232 animals from six dromedary populations (Azawad, Hybrid, Naili, Rguibi, Sahraoui, Targui) in Algeria. A Gly69Ser mutation was observed in a single animal of the Targui population and a Gly134Glu polymorphism in the Azawad, Hybrid and Rguibi populations, with a frequency of the 134Glu allele of 2.6%, 7.7% and 7.1%, respectively. Although our work highlights a low variability of Algerian dromedary PRNP, as a possible indication of a recent evolutionary history of cPrD, it offers also evidence of PRNP variants whose role in prion disease resistance/susceptibility deserve to be deepened. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

Update on hepatitis c: Direct-acting antivirals

Hepatitis c virus(HcV) was discovered 26 years ago. For decades, interferon-based therapy has been the mainstay of treatment for HcV. Recently, several direct-acting antivirals(DAAs) have been approved for treatment of HcV-infected patients and to help combat the virus. These drugs have revolutionized the management of HcV as all-oral regimens with favorable side effect profiles and superior rates of sustained virological response. Emerging real-world data are demonstrating results comparable to registration trials for DAA agents. Suddenly, the potential for eradicating HcV is on the horizon.

HNTs-templated preparation of carbon nanorods by nanocasting method

carbon nanorods (cNRs) have been attracting increasing interest because of their potential applications in high-performance nanoscale materials and electronic devices. Among the many preparation methods, the nanocasting method via inorganic template materials exhibited a controllable and facile feature. This work was to present a novel preparation of cNRs through the nanocasting method using halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) as the template and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the nanocasting carbon source. For the sake of PVA nanocasted in the hollow structure of HNTs, we adopted the repeated soakage method. The forming process and structure of cNRs were revealed by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, SAED XPS, Raman and Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) characterisation techniques. The results showed that the as-obtained cNRs with the rod-like structure had a high specific surface area of ca. 284 m(2)/g and exhibited typical mesoporous features.
