Due to the poor conductivity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), it is challenging to directly employ MOFs as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Herein, hydroxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (f-MWcNT) was used to decorate ZnO/c obtained from the prior calcination of pristine zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and applied as electrode material for supercapacitor application. The resulting ZnO/c@f-MWcNT electrode exhibits excellent storage performance, as confirmed by the specificcapacitance of 650 F/g at 1 A/g and a superior energy/power density compared to the single electrode. Additionally, the composite electrode displayed remarkable cycling stability of 70% after 5000 cycles and retained 75% of its initial capacitance at 10 A/g, demonstrating good rate cyclability. The exceptional performance of ZnO/c@f-MWcNT was attributed to the synergistic effects offered by f-MWcNT which improved its electrical conductivity and ZnO/c that provided sufficient redox-active sites and structural stability. This work may promote the design of advanced MOF-based nanocomposites for energy storage application.

Memory safety issues in c are the origin of various vulnerabilities that can compromise a program's correctness or safety from attacks. We propose a different approach to tackle memory safety, the replication of Rust's Mid-level Intermediate Representation (MIR) Borrow checker, through the usage of static analysis and successive source-to-source code transformations, to be composed upstream of the compiler, thus ensuring maximal compatibility with most build systems. This allows us to approximate a subset of c to Rust's core concepts, applying the memory safety guarantees of the rustccompiler to c. In this work, we present a survey of Rust's efforts towards ensuring memory safety, and describe the theoretical basis for a c borrow checker, alongside a proof-of-concept that was developed to demonstrate its potential. This prototype correctly identified violations of the ownership and aliasing rules, and accurately reported each error with a level of detail comparable to that of the rustccompiler.

Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:c) is a synthesized analogue of viral double-strand RNA and considered as a potential immunostimulant in aquaculture. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to play important roles in the development of the immune system and in regulation of host antiviral responses. In our earlier study, it was found that poly I:c pre-treatment could stimulate the resistance against cyprinid herpesvirus 2 (cyHV-2) infection and enhance the antiviral immune response in gibel carp. To understand the role of miRNAs in regulating the host response to poly I:c treatment, we investigated the expression profiles of miRNAs in the head kidney of poly I:c-treated gibel carp with small RNA sequencing technology. When compared with the untreated group, a total of 24 differentially expressed miRNAs were identified in the poly I:c-stimulated fish, among which, 7 and 17 miRNAs were upregulated and downregulated, respectively. Analysis of target genes of these differentially expressed miRNAs found that most targeted mRNAs were involved in catalytic activity, peptidase activity and endopeptidase activity, and were enriched in the metabolic, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum and oxidative phosphorylation signaling pathways, suggesting that poly I:ccould alter the expression of metabolism-related miRNAs in the kidney of gibel carp. Besides, it was noted that some immune-related miRNAs, including inflammation-related miRNAs (miR-192 and miR-731) and interferon-related miRNAs (miR-194a and miR-122), were downregulated after poly I:c treatment. In summary, it was found that poly I:ccould regulate the cellular levels of specific miRNAs involved in metabolism and immune responses in the head kidney of gibel carp, which may increase the capacity of the immune cells to fight against pathogens infection.

Fluorescent probes offer incredibly effective tools for visualizing the dynamic morphology of lipid droplets (LDs) and investigating their physiological interactions. In this work, we have utilized solvatochromiccoumarin probes bearing nitrile and ester substituents for live-cell imaging. The fluorescence probes are characterized by a donor (diethylamino) and acceptor (nitrile and/or ester) substituents and a rotatable double bond. The designed ar-chitecture allows investigation of environmental sensitivity apart from providing excellent ability to target sub -cellular organelles. The synthesized fluorophores showed low cytotoxicity and excellent localization within the lipid droplets. Further, the fluorophores were also utilized to study viscosity changes within the LDs induced by Nystatin. More importantly, we also demonstrate imaging of LDs in multi-cellular animal models such as c. elegans.

c 27 –c 29 steranes are common constituents of crude oils and hydrocarbon source rocks and are usually dominated by either c 27 or c 29 compounds. In the current study, however, steranes dominated by c 28 components were detected in eight lacustrine source rock samples in the first member of the Shahejie Formation in the Qikou Sag, Bohai Bay Basin of Eastern china. Ratios of c 28 /(c 27 + c 28 + c 29 ) ααα 20R steranes in four samples can exceeded 50%. Furthermore, c 27 triaromatic steroids, presumably originating from c 28 steranes, were also observed at high levels, relative to c 26 and c 28 homologues. Stable carbon isotope compositions of a c 28 ααα 20R sterane and c 27 20R triaromatic steroid were found to be similar, with δ 13 c at −37‰ and −36‰ respectively, much lower than values for pristane (by ∼7‰) and total organiccarbon (by ∼10‰). The abnormally low δ 13 c values of the steroids suggest that c 28 ααα 20R sterane was biosynthesized by algae blooming in the water column during phases of overturn and mixing, such as in autumn, during which recycled cO 2 and nutrients welling up from hypolimnion to the epilimnion are assimilated, contributing to a high algal productivity and low δ 13 c in algal organic matter.

The formation of the nervous system and its striking complexity is a remarkable feat of development. c. elegans served as a unique model to dissect the molecular events in neurodevelopment, from its early visionaries to the current booming neuroscience community. Soon after being introduced as a model, c. elegans was mapped at the level of genes, cells, and synapses, providing the first metazoan with a complete cell lineage, sequenced genome, and connectome. Here, I summarize mechanisms underlying c. elegans neurodevelopment, from the generation and diversification of neural components to their navigation and connectivity. I point out recent noteworthy findings in the fields of glia biology, sex dimorphism and plasticity in neurodevelopment, highlighting how current research connects back to the pioneering studies by Brenner, Sulston and colleagues. Multifaceted investigations in model organisms, connecting genes to cell function and behavior, expand our mechanistic understanding of neurodevelopment while allowing us to formulate emerging questions for future discoveries.

The effect of the addition of crop residues to soil has been extensively studied;however, little is known about their effect on P pools in the detritusphere and how these pools change if the residue is replaced by another residue with similar or different P concentration. An experiment was conducted to determine the influence of a change of residue types on P pools in the detritusphere. Detritusphere soil was generated by placing 20 g kg(-1) of either mature barley straw (H;high c/P 255) or young faba bean residue (L;low c/P 38) between two fine nylon meshes which were then sandwiched between two PVccaps filled with loamy sand maintained at 50% water holding capacity throughout the experiment. Then, the open ends of the caps were pressed together and held in place with rubber bands. After 2 weeks of moist incubation, the residues were replaced with either a H or L, resulting in four residue treatments: high-high (HH), high-low (HL), low-low (LL), or low-high (LH) which were incubated another 14 days. A control without residues between the caps was unamended throughout. The following P pools were measured in soil at 0-1 mm from the surface 14 days after the first (day 14) and second (day 28) residue addition: readily available P (cacl2 and anion exchange P);P bound to soil particles (citrate and Hcl-P);and microbial biomass P (MBP). On day 14, P pools and available N were higher, but MBP and microbial biomass N (MBN) were lower in L than in H. On day 28, P pools and available N followed the order LL > HL > LH > HH, whereas MBN and MBP were highest in HL. In a second experiment, the effect of crop residue removal and replacement with anion exchange membrane (AEM) on P pools in the detritusphere was assessed. Detritusphere soil was generated using faba bean residue as described above. The control had no residues between the caps. During test execution, automated software tests can interfere, i.e., their results can deviate depending on their (possibly interleaved) execution order. Such interference imposes severe restrictions on regression testing, when execution order is not or cannot be controlled for, as they can lead to non-deterministic deviations of test results giving false indication of regressions in the code base. While the phenomenon has been extensively studied for Java and Python projects, it remains unclear if or how the obtained results apply for other languages with different testing practices. Our study contributes to filling that gap by reporting results from a large-scale study on test interference in 134 c projects. To cope with the combinatorial explosion of test execution counts when testing with all possible test orders, we propose and evaluate four novel dynamic reduction strategies for test permutations, which yield massive reductions in the number of test sequences to execute. As these strategies are specific to the resources that tests interfere on, rather than the language in which the code is written, we expect them to be useful for the study of test interference in other languages beyond c. Based on the results obtained with these reductions, our results indicate that test order dependencies are far less common in c projects, compared to Java or Python, and that other aspects (concurrency, cPU time) more frequently threaten test result stability.

Inflammatory microenvironment is an important factor for promoting cancer invasion and metastasis, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we mimicked an inflammatory microenvironment both in vitro and in vivo and investigated its effects on the invasion and metastasis of colon cancer. Moreover, colon cancer patient samples were also analyzed statistically. conditioned medium from the differentiated macrophages induced invasion and migration of colon cancer cells in vitro, which could be reversed by the treatment of a neutralizing anti-growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) antibody, indicating GDF15 involvement in inflammation-induced invasiveness. Also, we observed similar effects of human recombinant GDF15 on colon cancer cells. Mechanistically, GDF15 activated c-Fos by separating it from Lamin A/c, increasing transcriptional activity of c-Fos and regulating EMT gene expressions. However, c-Fos knockdown using lentivirus shRNA plasmid inhibited GDF15-triggered invasion and migration in vitro. In vivo, inflammation caused by lipopolysaccharides obviously increased GDF15 secretion, and c-Fos knockdown reduced the lung metastasis of colon cancer cells in mice model. In addition, c-Fos expressions in patient samples were found to be associated with colon cancer metastasis and TNM stages. Taken together, GDF15 in inflammatory microenvironment induces colon cancer invasion and metastasis by regulating EMT genes by activating c-Fos, which might be a potential therapeutic target for metastaticcolon cancer.
