c-programming self-assessment exercises versus final exams: 12 years of experience

The new curricula derived from the Bologna process encourage continuous evaluations during the teaching period. This situation causes already depleted teachers to have an additional workload during the course, so the emergence of tools that automatically evaluate this work is necessary. In computer science, the ideal evaluation technique would be to use automatic code evaluators (such as c, Java, c++, etc.). The main objective of this work is to analyze whether the use of c-coding self-assessment exercises correlates with an improvement in exam performance. For this purpose, the implementation of self-assessment exercises on the AulaWeb platform during the last 12 academic years (2010/2011-2021/2022) in a programming Fundamentals course (Fundamentos de Programacion) in an engineering faculty at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) was collected. The main tasks carried out in this research have been: (i) recovery and analysis of the information collected from the AulaWeb platform and (ii) the study of the influence of the self-assessment exercises on the final grades obtained by the students of the course through correlations. The most important findings are: (a) self-assessment exercises generate experience and confidence when facing problems (this situation translates into a higher probability of passing the course) and (b) self-assessment exercises influence the final exams taken at the end of the semester, mainly due to the short time between the end of classes and the exam. Self-assessment exercises provide valuable information for teachers to monitor the progress of large groups of students during the semester and for students to pass exams.

Integrating Lab-size Automation Plants into a Web-based E-learning Environment for Teaching c programming in Teams

Teaching computer science and particularly programming in the curriculum of a mechanical engineering bachelor poses a difficult task due to motivational factors of the students. In this paper we describe the measures we have taken to reduce barriers and motivate the freshmen students to deal with the subject by introduction of an e-learning course and further by offering an associated lab course with practical application of cyclic programming of a real-time system in teams. Further we present an adapted architecture how the lab course is enhanced to act as a remote lab. Finally we evaluate the impact of the course by measuring the success factors of different gender combined groups and give an outlook on future scenarios for lab courses to improve the learning experience and success of the students for both gender. © 2015, IFAc (International Federation of Automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Many universities choose the c programming language (c) as the first one they teach their students, early on in their program. However, students often consider programming courses difficult, and these courses often have among the highest dropout rates of computer science courses offered. It is therefore critical to provide more effective instruction to help students understand the syntax of c and prevent them losing interest in programming. In addition, homework and paper-based exams are still the main assessment methods in the majority of classrooms. It is difficult for teachers to grasp students' learning situation due to the large amount of evaluation work. To facilitate teaching and learning of c, in this article we propose a system-LAPLE (Learning Analytics in programming Language Education)-that provides a learning dashboard to capture the behavior of students in the classroom and identify the different difficulties faced by different students looking at different knowledge. With LAPLE, teachers may better grasp students' learning situation in real time and better improve educational materials using analysis results. For their part, novice undergraduate programmers may use LAPLE to locate syntax errors in c and get recommendations from educational materials on how to fix them.

c programming has been the fundamental subject to a lot of university students for studying programming languages, algorithms, and computer architecture. currently, we are developing c programming learning assistant system (cPLAS) for its self-study by extending our works of JPLAS for Java programming. JPLAS provides the code completion problem (ccP) to offer practical programming exercises. A ccP instance asks the completion of the given source code by filling in the missing elements. The correctness of the answer is marked through string matching by comparing each answer statement with the correct one. In this paper, we present the ccP by extending our works of the element fill-in-blank problem (EFP) in cPLAS. For evaluations, we generated 10 ccP instances and assigned them to 54 undergraduate students in Myanmar and Japan. Their solution results show that the ccP instances are generally suitable for c programming study by novice students, but those on pointer need improvements for better solutions.

MAX/c is a web application for c programming education, which has been successfully used in class of a computer science department for more than 4 years. It features algorithmically generated feedbacks both for drill questions and for programming exercise submissions. For the latter, source programs submitted by the students are statically analyzed as well as executed and tested against test cases. The execution is performed by a c interpreter which is developed for this purpose and designed to facilitate the detection of potential run time errors and the collection of useful information from the execution. We describe this system, together with the ideas behind the system. We also describe the recent integration of MAX/c into Sakai, an open source e-Learning environment.

c is a popular programming language because of high portability and simple syntax. As a result, it is the first course for most of university students who major in computer, electronics, and electrical engineering and so on. To obtain a good learning achievement, students usually need to put their effort and time on programming as much as possible. Therefore, a ubiquitous integrated development environment is helpful for students to practice programming anytime and anywhere. To achieve this goal, we develop a novel integrated development environment called Ubi-c for c programming based on clang and LLVM in this paper. Using this IDE, users can directly write, compile, execute and debug their c programs on Androidbased smart phones or tablets. Moreover, this IDE provides the API of multimedia programming, and integrates with cloud services such as Dropbox for storing user programs and data. consequently, users can easily develop multimedia applications by using c on mobile devices, and can switch their working environments between mobile devices and fixed computers with the support of Dropbox.

programming is an essential and compulsory subject for all engineering and physical sciences undergraduate students in our institution. The teaching, in c, is covered through two subjects that are separately enrolled and assessed, but closely coordinated: one subject is lecture-based and the other is laboratory-only. The diverse interests, backgrounds, and previous experiences of over 700 students in each class constitute both a challenge and an opportunity for innovative teaching practices. This paper describes experiences following recent changes in the organisation and management of the laboratory-based programming subject. The change to a less traditional organisation has reduced the number of failing students in the subject from over 100 in 2017 to just 14 in 2018. The new arrangements provide a clearer recognition of the students' programming abilities through their grades in the programming laboratory subject, while allowing us to provide suitable challenges and enhanced programming skills to the students who already have significant computer and programming experiences from their school studies.

According to the problem that the students' learning is passive and less interest in class study, a new scheme of merging life scene and project implement is presented in c programming. This method can motivate students' interest in c programming learning, changing "passive learning" into "active learning". Three years experiments of about 600 students in computer science and software engineering show that this method can activate students helping them to deeply understand abstract theory and rigid syntax rules, build up programming literacy, thus promote their technical knowledge grasp ability, programming ability and professional ability.

This study explores how first year students in Information Technology Engineering at college of Science and Technology, Royal University of Bhutan, learn c programming. An online questionnaire was administrated to the students and asked about time spent in collaborative learning, individual coding and watching someone code. These data were analyzed in correlating to their exam scores. Students' ways of preparing for exam and their concept on c programming are categorized. Our result indicate a relationship between how the different ways of working relate to their exam results. Further, the insights of the project point to that learning of theory of programming and practicing programming go hand in hand in a c programming course. Our intent is that this study will be helpful for future teachers and students in programming courses in Bhutan and in its region.

currently, c programming is educated at the first programming course in universities across the world. However, a lot of students find difficulty due to formality in programming. To assist self-studies, we have developed c programming learning assistant system (cPLAS) by extending works of JPLAS for Java. In this paper, we study the grammar-concept understanding problem (GUP) in cPLAS for the first-step study of novice students. A GUP instance has a source code and a set of questions on grammar concepts in the code, where the answer is a keyword. The correctness is marked through string matching. We select the keywords and the questions with the definitions for GUP. For evaluations, we generate 12 GUP instances and assign them to 75 undergraduate students in Japan and Myanmar. The results show that the proposal is effective in revealing the student understanding levels.
