Generalised resilience models for power systems and dependent infrastructure during extreme events

This study presents a generalised critical infrastructures resilience model for extreme events with a focus on power grids. Infrastructures are modelled as three domains - physical, cyber, and human. Each domain is described with respect to the services it provides. Each domain is represented by geometric graphs for each service it provides. The resilience models use geometric graphs with each graph's nodes and edges characterised based on relevant attributes. This study also discusses various applied aspects related to resilience models including the impact of changing operating environment, human-driven processes, such as logistics, and service buffers. Due to their stated particular importance in the U.S. Presidential Policy Directive 21, particular attention is placed on the power infrastructure and its impact on the public communication infrastructures as a main critical load. This study focuses on the multi-time scale power system operation to capture cascading outages within, and subsequently to its dependent infrastructure - the public communication system (e.g. wireless or `cellular' communication networks) as a main critical load. This study illustrates the merits of the proposed models in calculating resilience in extreme events and derives physical domain representation for electric and communication systems using cell tower and substation data from the USA.

Energy management system for residential buildings based on fuzzy logic: design and implementation in smart-meter

Advances in distributed generation and increased contribution of renewable energy source (RES) require development of smart grid technologies. Smart metering systems, as a part of smart grid technologies, in cooperation with modern buildings equipped with building management system allows for improvement of energy efficiency. It is possible to partially cover the power demand of a building from the local RESs. However, in order to ensure maximum added value, energy management system (EMS) is essential. This article presents the project and practical implementation of an EMS implemented in smart-meter. The designed system is based on an original algorithm using fuzzy logic. The rule base was created in FcL language and the implementation was carried out in c++ with the object-oriented programming (OOP). For the efficiency rating indicator, peak-to-average ratio (PAR) was selected. This ratio depending on the daily load profile decreased within a range from 15 to 54%, and the average value was 30%. The proposed energy management algorithm helps to reduce energy consumption at peak demand by 34%, with the total reduction of energy consumption during the day of 7%. The described solution demonstrates a potential for real implementation and was tested in hardware.

Resilience of the electric distribution systems: concepts, classification, assessment, challenges, and research needs

Distribution system resilience is an emerging topic of interest given an increasing number of extreme events and adverse impacts on the power grid (e.g. Hurricane Maria and Ukraine cyber-attack). The concept of resilience poses serious challenges to the power system research community given varied definitions and multivariate factors affecting resilience. The ability of nature or malicious actors to disrupt critical services is a real threat to the life of our citizens, national assets and the security of a nation. Many examples of such events have been documented over the years. Promising research in this area has been in progress focused on the quantification and in enabling resilience of the distribution system. The objective of this study is to provide a detailed overview of distribution system resilience, the classification, assessment, metrics for measuring resilience, possible methods for enabling resilience, and the associated challenges. A new multi-dimensional and multi-temporal resilience assessment framework is introduced along with a research roadmap outlining the future of resilience to help the reader conceptualise the theories and research gaps in the area of distribution system cyber-physical resilience.

collaborative demand response in smart electric grid with virtual system operator

The authors present a novel concept of virtual system operator (VSO) and its mechanism. This mechanism aims to determine load consumption pattern on day-ahead basis which suits all the involved entities individually in real-time pricing environment. The demand profile is scheduled by every consumer by performing demand response (DR) without having to coordinate with other consumers in the system. In the process flow, the VSO which remains in communication with the system operator and the consumer relays information regarding day-ahead electricity tariff to consumers. based on which the consumers simultaneously perform DR to optimise their electricity bill and forward the schedule to the VSO. This process repeats iteratively until a balanced price profile as well as load schedule is established in the system. Such schedules are capable of reducing dynamics in the electricity market. The proposed concept is demonstrated through three different types of consumers. These consumers realise DR through different objective functions and up to different extents. Ultimately, the load schedules are obtained for all individual users and corresponding price profile which suits every entity of the system.

Optimal feature selection for islanding detection in distributed generation

The integration of the distributed power generation into a distribution system comes with several system problems. One of the teething problems related to system protection is islanding detection. Various anti-islanding techniques based on feature evaluation were proposed in the recent past. However, they overlook the need for justifying the selection of a particular detection feature among all the possible measures. In this study, a wrapper feature selection approach is proposed where a modified multi-objective differential evolution algorithm is coupled with a kernel-based extreme learning machine classifier. To select the optimum features, five standard objective functions have been considered, such as dependability, security, accuracy, F-measure, and the number of features. About 1864 cases have been generated from the designed IEEE 13 bus system to extract the sensitive features. IEEE 1547 standards have been considered while designing and testing the IEEE 13 bus system against islanding. The selected optimal features detect the islanded condition decisively for both synchronous and inverter-based distributed generators. The features also validate their performance under noisy environment accurately with lesser computational time.

Distributed architecture for self-organising smart distribution systems

Automation of emerging smart distribution grids is required to operate the grid efficiently and swiftly. This study draws a vision on grid automation with agent-based cyber-physical system integration to provide a truly distributed architecture. Furthermore, this study introduces a notion of self-organising smart distribution grid that promotes the grid capability to heal and organise itself in the best-suited topology without the intervention of a central operator. The proposed architecture comprises the system of bus agents (bAs) that emulate the given grid. This emulation is used by bAs to comprehend the grid conditions, switch location and compute their representative bus voltage and partial loss and to estimate the best organisation of the bAs as well as the grid. This study details the behavioural designing of bA that incorporates the functioning above. The proposed architecture also uses an event trigger approach to initiate grid organisation, which is showcased by case studies on IEEE 33 bus system. The results showcase the efficiency of the concept regarding solution accuracy with distributed computations;computational efficiency during contingencies;architecture performance under communication latency;and fault-tolerant characteristics of the proposed architecture.
