The paper presents a theoretical approach and implementing issue for automatic CNC toolpath generation using morphological image processing operators applied to depth map images. This method allows computing cutter compensation for various end mill shapes. Roughing is made using zigzag cuts with a flat end mill, and finishing is done with isoparametric toolpaths using various rounded end mills. An AI-based algorithm and image processing software create CNC machining instructions from depth map image models. The paper also describes a graphical user interface and includes experimental results.

The current evolution of the software systems supporting the mechanical design processes is gradually extending the “traditional” cad systems domain to integrate cam, CAE and PDM modules. Consequently, the cad model is changing its geometry-oriented nature, integrating information and data coming from the whole design and production processes. A growing network of relations characterizes this new cad model. At present, some relations are represented explicitly in the integrated cad model while others are completely implicit; for some types of relations, cad systems offer only a limited set of operation; finally, the relations are usually presented to the user though heterogeneous interaction modalities. This paper proposes a classification of the typical cad relations and suggests a basic set of operations on them; finally, it discusses the emerging interaction modalities and delineates their possible application in the cad field.

In this paper, a general assembly model is proposed to support the evolving process characterizing the elaboration of assemblies' product structure. The concept of extended assembly feature is proposed as a functional carrier, consisting of a generic relation among the assembly-modeling entities. The assembly feature model describes the link between product functions and form features of parts. On the basis of this link. the propagation of design modifications preserving the functionality and the coherence of assembly model is demonstrated.

The design of new mechatronic products include a dynamic analysis of the accompanying virtual prototypes requiring a completely computerized representation of the product. All necessary design steps and simulations as well as development and manufacturing processes have to be represented digitally. An efficient product data management includes safe storage, maintainance and supply of product-related data. Therefore the project MechaSTEP - STEP data model for simulation data of mechatronic systems was launched, the initial results of which are presented. A new approach for parallel partitioning and placement of standard cells for ULSI has been proposed. It is based on the well-known min-cut algorithm and uses a partitioning strategy which is oriented to minimise the number of nets crossing the cutting lines with even cell distribution over the chip area. It was implemented as a cad software tool "SOCRAT", based on SUN SPARCstation and PARSYTEC powerXplorer. The results of developed tool evaluation based on the MCNC International standard benchmarks proved that SOCRAT's runtime for VLSI is up to 4-8 times faster than cadENCE's one using a simulated annealing algorithm, and for high complexity ULSI it is expected to be much faster.

The system described in the following article, simplifies the task of spatial planning of assembly stations. On the one hand this is done through automation of iterative planning tasks. On the other hand virtual reality devices are used in cases where it is more efficient to include the planner's intuition. Applications of this planning method will be shown. One application shows the spatial planning of an automated assembly work station, the other deals with a manual workstation. Furthermore the virtual reality equipment at the iwb will be described briefly.

At the Department of Automation, Technical University of Budapest in the last years the basic course of control theory has been renewed significantly using cad devices, especially Matlab in the computer classroom. In this way the theoretical knowledge became more understandable and convincing for the students. Recently the Internet culture has burst into our everyday life, providing new possibilities for control education, too. It was a challenge lo combine the facilities provided both by the Web and Matlab. In the background of the system the Matlab program package supports the teaching process executing the computations. This paper proposes an information model for traceability data management in complex industrial environments such us extended enterprises. The objective of the model is to assure that traceability data will be understandable and available whenever required, no matter the product or the manufacturing complexity. The main feature of the model is the definition of an explicit link between the traceability data and the product structure. This provides data significance and drives the data transfer process through industrial partners along the supply chain.

This paper proposes a STEP-compliant extension of the AP-238 information model to support CNC manufacturing monitoring capabilities. New nc_functions for AP-238 are proposed to provide online machining information and support the development of AP-238 close loop manufacturing, involving AP-238 cam systems and AP-238 NC interpreters. As a sample case, the paper focuses on the sequential supervision of machining operation time with STEP-NC functions, before addressing other manufacturing variables and more advanced close-loop machining strategies.
