Traditional imaging sensors for computer vision, such as ccd and CMOS arrays, have well-known limitations with regard to detecting objects that are very small in size (that is, a small object image compared to the pixel size), are viewed in a low contrast situation, are moving very fast (with respect to the sensor integration time), or are moving very small distances compared to the sensor pixel spacing. Any one or a combination of these situations can foil a traditional ccd or CMOS sensor array. Alternative sensor designs derived from biological vision systems promise better resolution and object detection in situations such as these. The patent-pending biomimetic vision sensor based on Musca domestica (the common house fly) is capable of reliable object rendition in spite of challenging movement and low contrast conditions. We discuss some interesting early results of comparing the biomimetic sensor to commercial ccd sensors in terms of contrast and motion sensitivity in situations such as those listed above.

We propose and demonstrate a technique based on digital holography for three-dimensional (3D) object recognition. In our method, the complex wavefront of the 3D object to be recognized is recorded as a Fresnel hologram using a ccd camera. A two step numerical reconstruction process, retrieval of complex wavefront recorded on the ccd plane and propagation of wavefront to the object plane, gives a complex valued two-dimensional (2D) image, which contains information regarding the amplitude and phase of the object wavefront in a 2D plane. The encoding of 3D object information as 2D digital image enables, the use of various image-processing techniques for the post processing of the data. We use a Mexican hat wavelet matched filter (WMF) to discriminate between two different objects. WMF performs wavelet transform (WT) to enhance significant features of the images and the correlation of the so obtained WT coefficients in a single step. Digital wavelet matched filtering improves the discrimination capability and results in sharper correlation peaks as compared to classical matched filtering. As compared to many of the 3D recognition techniques based on the processing of 2D perspectives, our system has lesser complexity at the implementation and operational levels.

This paper proposes and validates a method for the quantitative analysis of multiphase flows and objects of complex composition with image registration on a charge-coupled-device array taking into account the X-ray spectral characteristics. The method was tested on objects of known composition and shape. In this paper, ccd arrays are used to replace linear ccd components that are popular in many high-speed scanners;a high-speed parallel buffer and paper feed device based on static electricity principle are also devised. Compared with linear ccd components, ccd arrays can provide resolutions in two directions, x and y. it can make the scan speed in the y direction much quicker, not limited by the low-specd mechanical driver. And also, the matching problems of scan linearity in x and y directions are solved. Paper feed device based on static electricity principle can make scan scope vary freely, not restricted by the type of scanning targets;and the scan speed is increased, not influenced by the size of papers, The buffer gives scanner the parallel ability in processing data, which can transfer data acquired by ccd arrays more quickly, In addition, the cost of this method is low.

Optical sensor interrogation with a blazed fiber Bragg grating and a charge-coupled device linear array

We present what is to our knowledge the first comprehensive investigation of the use of blazed fiber Bragg gratings (BFBGs) to interrogate wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) in-fiber optical sensor arrays. We show that the light outcoupled from the core of these BFBGs is radiated with sufficient optical power that it maybe detected with a low-cost charge-coupled device (ccd) array. We present thorough system performance analysis that shows sufficient spectral-spatial resolution to decode sensors with a WDM separation of 75 pro, signal-to-noise ratio greater than 45-dB bandwidth of 70 nm, and drift of only 0.1 pro. We show the system to be polarization-state insensitive, making the BFBG-ccd spectral analysis technique a practical, extremely low-cost, alternative to traditional tunable filter approaches. The results of test measurements of a photoemulsion plate on the PAVIKOM-1 measurement complex are presented. The plate was exposed in a beta-ray spectrograph at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems of the JINR. The plate was irradiated with internal-conversion electrons resulting from the decay of erbium isotopes. A precision television data-readout system with a ccd array containing 1360 x 1024 photodetecting elements ensured an accuracy of 0.5 mum along all coordinates.

The grating spectrometer operating in near infrared and visible spectral regions with photoregistration system for the room and high temperature spectra investigations is presented. The spectrometer allows to investigate the absorption spectra with the spectral resolution of 0.036 cm(-1) and the precition of the line position of 0.003 cm(-1). Absorption spectra of the atmospheric air was recorded.

Comparison of nonintensified and intensified ccd detectors for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

The performance and sensitivity of an intensified ccd array system and a nonintensified ccd array detector system are compared for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). LIBS measurements were recorded in a calcium-based aerosol-seeded gas stream at ambient pressure. The signal-to-noise ratio based-on the 393.37-nm calcium emission line was calculated as a function of detector delay with respect to the plasma-initiating laser pulse. Both ensemble-averaging and. single-shot spectral analyses were performed. For all conditions, the intensified ccd system provided an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio compared with the nonintensified ccd system. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

System model identification of a Fabry-Perot fiber optic sensing system

A Fabry-Perot fiber optic temperature sensing system is presented in this paper. It uses a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) to transform the environmental temperature into modulated reflected light. This light is directed to a patented light cross-correlator [6] that locates the position of the maximum interference fringe intensity, which is detected by a linear ccd array. Therefore, the actual observed data is the position of the ccd pixel detecting the maximum interference fringe intensity rather than the light intensity itself. Consequently, this sensing mechanism is tolerant to the loss of light power that may result from external effects. Based on an analysis of the entire sensing system, a theoretical dynamic model was developed, which shows that the system dynamic response depends on the heat transfer process in the sensor head and the signal processing in the signal conditioner. An experimental method was developed to validate the theoretical model. Two empirical dynamic models are also obtained from the experimental data. Comparing the theoretical model with the empirical models, the poles result from the heat transfer process in the sensor head.

Ship-borne measurements of ocean colour: development of a ccd-based reflectance radiometer and trials on a longitudinal transect of the Atlantic Ocean

A ship-borne reflectance radiometer was constructed capable of making sequential downward irradiance (E-d) and upward radiance (L-u) measurements from a fixed position over a wavelength range from 350 to 800 nm with 4 nm spectral resolution. The radiometer used a cooled ccd array as the sensing element and a bifurcated fibre optic bundle for the optical inputs. It was mounted on a ship's superstructure so that the radiance collector viewed the sea surface at the Brewster angle (53 degrees to the vertical) through a linear polarizing filter. Comparative measurements were made with the polarizer oriented horizontally and vertically in order to estimate the spectral effect of skylight reflected directly from the sea surface on reflectance spectra (L-u /E-d) measured in air. Regression algorithms based on waveband ratios were devised to relate the reflectance spectra to surface chlorophyll concentrations and to the diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwards irradiance at 490 nm. The results obtained were well correlated with in situ optical measurements and with chemical analyses of water samples. Ship-borne reflectance data obtained during an Atlantic Meridianal Transect cruise from the UK to the Falklands in September 1997 showed high particle concentrations in the English Channel and high chlorophyll concentrations in the Mauritanian upwelling and the south Atlantic.
