channel coding plays a pivotal role in ensuring reliable communication over wireless channels. With the growing need for ultra-reliable communication in emerging wireless use cases, the significance of channel coding has amplified. Furthermore, minimizing decoding latency is crucial for critical-mission applications, while optimizing energy efficiency is paramount for mobile and the Internet of Things (IoT) communications. As the fifth generation (5G) of mobile communications is currently in operation and 5G-advanced is on the horizon, the objective of this paper is to assess prominent channel coding schemes in the context of recent advancements and the anticipated requirements for the sixth generation (6G). In this paper, after considering the potential impact of channel coding on key performance indicators (KPIs) of wireless networks, we review the evolution of mobile communication standards and the organizations involved in the standardization, from the first generation (1G) to the current 5G, highlighting the technologies integral to achieving targeted KPIs such as reliability, data rate, latency, energy efficiency, spectral efficiency, connection density, and traffic capacity. Following this, we delve into the anticipated requirements for potential use cases in 6G. The subsequent sections of the paper focus on a comprehensive review of three primary coding schemes utilized in past generations and their recent advancements: low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, turbo codes (including convolutional codes), and polar codes (alongside Reed-Muller codes). Additionally, we examine alternative coding schemes like Fountain codes (also known as rate-less codes), sparse regression codes, among others. Our evaluation includes a comparative analysis of error correction performance and the performance of hardware implementation for these coding schemes, providing insights into their potential and suitability for the upcoming 6G era. Finding a digital code that maximizes the net linear density while maintaining satisfactory data reliability is a frequent objective in designing a channel for digital magnetic recording. This tutorial paper summarizes analog channel characteristics significant to the modulation and error-correction codes. Selection parameters for a modulation code are also discussed. Three statistical distributions are considered that describe the observable effects of the underlying probability of error. These distributions form the basis for selecting the error-correction code. Consideration is also given to the impact of system constraints on the selection of digital codes.

In this paper a simple coding scheme utilizing both sequential and algebraic coding is proposed, and bounds on its performance are derived using theoretical bounds on the performance of sequential decoding. These bounds are compared with bounds on a similar, though more complex, scheme proposed by Falconer [2]. Except for sequential rates in a range strictly above R_{comp}, the bounds on the present scheme are shown to be superior.

Two variable channel-coding schemes with unequal error protection （UEP） are proposed in terms of speech transmission over VHF-mobile radio system. These channel coding are separately based on rate-compatible punctured convolution （RCPC） code scheme and rate-compatible punctured turbo （RCPT） code scheme. With optimum puncturing designation and suitable scheme of rate matching, these two UEP schemes can achieve intra-class unequal error protection, which makes the protection for source bits with different importance more accurate. Its real time implementation based on a TMS320C6416 digital signal processor is also presented. The experimental results suggest that this method have reasonable system complexity and short processing delay.

Uplink Assisted Joint channel Estimation and CSI Feedback: An Approach Based on Deep Joint Source-channel coding

In frequency division duplex (FDD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems, the acquisition of downlink channel state information (CSI) is essential for maximizing spatial resource utilization and improving system spectral efficiency. The separate design of modules in AI-based CSI feedback architectures under traditional modular communication frameworks, including channel estimation (CE), CSI compression and feedback, leads to sub-optimal performance. In this paper, we propose an uplink assisted joint CE and and CSI feedback approach via deep learning for downlink CSI acquisition, which mitigates performance degradation caused by distribution bias across separately trained modules in traditional modular communication frameworks. The proposed network adopts a deep joint source-channel coding (DJSCC) architecture to mitigate the "cliff effect" encountered in the conventional separate source-channel coding. Furthermore, we exploit the uplink CSI as auxiliary information to enhance CSI reconstruction accuracy by leveraging the partial reciprocity between the uplink and downlink channels in FDD systems, without introducing additional overhead. The effectiveness of uplink CSI as assisted information and the necessity of an end-to-end multi-module joint training architecture is validated through comprehensive ablation and scalability experiments. Information theory has driven the information and communication technology industry for over 70 years. Great successes have been achieved in both academia and industry. In theory, polar codes and spatially coupled low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have achieved the theoretical bound. In practice, capacity-approaching coding schemes such as turbo, polar, and LDPC codes are adopted by global wireless standards and implemented with reasonable complexity. However, this by no means suggests a halt in future information theoretic research. For channel coding, coding gain has been the main key performance indicator (KPI). From the practical viewpoint, there is a long list of unfulfilled target KPIs that deserves rigorous and deeper understanding. The inability to fulfil these target KPIs will become the major limitations of future communication systems such as 6G and beyond. Moreover, a diverse set of new 6G services will require new capabilities beyond data transmissions. New opportunities will be created for information theory and channel coding. Above all, we hope that the readers of this survey find the discussion of motivational background and preliminary results from an industry perspective helpful. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper investigates the performance of wireless systems that employ finite-blocklength channel codes for transmission and operate under queueing constraints in the form of limitations on buffer overflow probabilities. A block fading model, in which fading stays constant in each coherence block and change independently between blocks, is considered. It is assumed that channel coding is performed over multiple coherence blocks. An approximate lower bound on the transmission rate is obtained from Feintein's Lemma. This lower bound is considered as the service rate and is incorporated into the effective capacity formulation, which characterizes the maximum constant arrival rate that can be supported under statistical queuing constraints. Performances of variable-rate and fixed-rate transmissions are studied. The optimum error probability for variable rate transmission and the optimum coding rate for fixed rate transmission are shown to be unique. Moreover, the tradeoff between the throughput and the number of blocks over which channel coding is performed is identified.

An Ultra-Low Complexity and High Efficiency Approach for Lossless Alpha channel coding

Alpha channel is being applied in an increasing number of mobile web applications on mobile devices that require ultra-low power consumption in all cases including compute-intensive video encoding and decoding. Thus, we propose an ultra-low coding complexity and high efficiency alpha channel lossless coding approach. A novel coding framework and four new coding schemes are proposed for alpha channel coding. The framework fuses a string matching technique and a proposed prediction coding scheme named bit-depth preserving prediction (BDPP) together to reduce the correlations within and between repeated identical patterns and neighboring pixels. To achieve a good tradeoff between complexity and efficiency, either the unmatchable bytes are coded directly or the BDPP residuals of unmatchable bytes are coded by a proposed bytewise entropy coding scheme named 0.5-1-2byte-size-code. The other string matching parameters are coded by another proposed bytewise entropy coding scheme named byte-size multi-variable-length-code. To speed up the string-matching search, we apply a fast string search scheme that combines special position search and hash-based search. For the selected typical 236 alpha test images, compared with x265 in the fastest configuration and lossless mode, the proposed lossless approach achieves 14.33% less total compressed bytes with only 2.75% encoding and 1.83% decoding runtime. The proposed approach also outperforms the conventional lossless coding techniques such as LZ4HC, ZLIB, and PNG.

Error detection and error correction are one of the pillars of any communication system which serve as an error correction mechanism and improve signal quality. In this paper, we present a turbo channel coding algorithm for up-link transport channel in narrowband internet of things. The proposed channel coding uses 24-bit CRC syndrome calculator and turbo codes with a tail bit convolutional encoder to transmits NB-IoT packet date from MAC layer to physical layer over AWGN. In addition, we carried out performance analysis and simulation of the proposed algorithm in accordance with NB-IoT requirement specified by 3GPP standard.
