The use of multiresolution (MR) joint source-channel coding in the context of digital terrestrial broadcasting of high definition television (HDTV) is shown to be an efficient alternative to traditional single-resolution techniques. While the single-resolution schemes suffer from a sharp threshold effect in the fringes of the broadcast area, we show how a matched multiresolution approach to both source and channel coding can provide a stepwise graceful degradation. Furthermore, this multiresolution approach improves the behavior, in terms of coverage and robustness of the transmission scheme, over systems that are not specifically designed for broadcast situations. This paper examines the alternatives available for multiresolution transmission through embedded modulation and error correction codes. We also show how multiresolution trellis-coded modulation (TCM) can be used to increase coverage range. We present coding results and simulations of noisy transmission. From a systems point of view, we also discuss the tradeoffs involved in the choice of the low- and high-resolution coverage areas as well as the comparative costs and complexities of the different multiresolution transmission alternatives.

A Robust Watermarking Scheme in YCbCr Color Space Based on channel coding

The rapid development of big data and cloud computing technologies greatly accelerate the spreading and utilization of images and videos. The copyright protection for images and videos is becoming increasingly serious. In this paper, we proposed the robust non-blind watermarking schemes in YCbCr color space based on channel coding. The source watermark image is encoded and singular value decomposed. Subsequently, the singular value matrixes are embedded into the Y, Cb, and Cr components of the host image after four-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The embedding factor for each component is calculated based on the just-noticeable distortion and the singular vectors of HL subband of DWT. The peak signal-to-noise ratio of the watermarked image and the normalized correlation coefficient of the extracted watermark are investigated. It is shown that the proposed channel coding-based schemes can achieve near exact watermark recovery against all kinds of attacks. Considering both robustness and transparency, the convolutional code-based additive embedding scheme is optimal, which can also achieve good performance for video watermarking after extension.

This paper considers different channel coding techniques suitable for the control plane signals that will be required for some of the services enabled by the ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Core Network (BCN). Short packet and variable code rates are necessary for control plane communications. The suggested techniques are included in the 5G New Radio (NR) and IEEE 802.11 standards. LDPC and CRC-aided (CA) Polar for 5G NR, while Convolution Codes are the main solution for WLAN communications. On the one hand, the study comprises a discussion on the impact of the technical solutions into the core network architectural aspects. On the other hand, the reliability performance of the candidates is evaluated under the Additive White Gaussian Noise channel (AWGN) for different code rates. The results show that 5G NR CA-Polar is the best candidate.

channel capacity and error exponents of variable rate adaptive channel coding for Rayleigh fading channels

We have evaluated the information theoretical performance of variable rate adaptive channel coding for Rayleigh fading channels. The channel states are detected at the receiver and fed back to the transmitter by means of a noiseless feedback link, Based on the channel state informations, the transmitter can adjust the channel coding scheme accordingly. Coherent channel and arbitrary channel symbols with a fixed average transmitted power contraint are assumed. The channel capacity and the error exponent are evaluated and the optimal rate control rules are found for Rayleigh fading channels with feedback of channel states. It is shown that the variable rate scheme can only increase the channel error exponent, The effects of additional practical constraints and finite feedback delays are also considered. Finally, we compare the performance of the variable rate adaptive channel coding in high bandwidth-expansion systems (CDMA) and high bandwidth-efficiency systems (TDMA).

Characterization and computation of optimal distributions for channel coding

This paper concerns the structure of capacity-achieving input distributions for stochastic channel models, and a renewed look at their computational aspects. The following conclusions are obtained under general assumptions on the channel statistics. i) The capacity-achieving input distribution is binary for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The proof is obtained on comparing the optimization equations that determine channel capacity with a linear program over the space of probability measures. ii) Simple discrete approximations can nearly reach capacity even in: cases where the optimal distribution is known to be absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. iii) A new class of algorithms is introduced based on the cutting-plane method to iteratively construct discrete distributions, along with upper and lower bounds on channel capacity. It is shown that the bounds converge to the true channel capacity, and that the distributions converge weakly to a capacity-achieving distribution.

Due to increased radio spectral congestion, the trend in future cellular mobile radio systems is toward digital transmission. The recent advances in spectrally efficient modulation techniques and high quality low bit rate speech coding have further aided this move. However, mobile radio channels are subject to signal fading and interference which causes significant transmission errors. The design of speech and channel coding for this application is therefore challenging. In this paper, the effects of digital transmission errors on a family of variable-rate embedded subband speech coders (SBC) have been analyzed in detail. It is shown that there is a difference in error sensitivity of four orders of magnitude between the most and the least sensitive bits of the speech coder. As a result, a family of rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes with flexible unequal error protection capabilities have been matched to the speech coder. These codes are optimally decoded with the Viterbi algorithm. On a Rayleigh fading channel with differential four phase shift keyed modulation, more than 5 dB gain in channel signal-to-noise ratio can be obtained by using 4 levels of unequal error protection over conventional designs that utilize only 2 levels. This gain is achieved over a large range of channel signal-to-noise ratios, at no extra bandwidth requirement and only a small complexity increase. Among the results, analysis and informal listening tests show that with a 4-level unequal error protection scheme, transmission of 12 kb/s speech is possible with very little degradation in quality over a 16 kb/s channel with an average bit error rate of 2 . 10(-2) at a vehicle speed of 60 mph and with interleaving over two 16 ms speech frames. The SBC speech encoder/decoder and the RCPC channel coder/decoder have been implemented on a single AT&T DSP-32 floating point signal processor. The overall end-to-end delay is about 88 ms.

Finite-State Source-channel coding for Individual Source Sequences With Source Side Information at the Decoder

We study the following semi-deterministic setting of the joint source-channel coding problem: a deterministic source sequence (a.k.a. individual sequence) is transmitted via a memoryless channel, using delay-limited encoder and decoder, which are both implementable by periodically-varying finite-state machines, and the decoder is granted with access to side information, which is a noisy version of the source sequence. We first derive a lower bound on the achievable expected distortion in terms of the empirical statistics of the source sequence, the number of states of the encoder, the number of states of the decoder, their period, and the overall delay. The bound is shown to be asymptotically achievable by universal block codes in the limit of long blocks. We also derive a lower bound to the best achievable excess-distortion probability and discuss situations where it is achievable. Here, of course, source coding and channel coding cannot be completely separated without loss of optimality. Finally, we outline a few extensions of the model considered, such as: (i) incorporating a common reconstruction constraint, (ii) availability of side information at both ends, and (iii) extension to the Shannon channel with causal state information at the encoder. This work both extends and improves on earlier work of the same flavor (Ziv 1980, Merhav 2014), which focused only on the expected distortion, without side information at either end, and without the above mentioned additional ingredients.

Codeword averaged density evolution for distributed joint source and channel coding with decoder side information

The authors consider applying the systematic low-density parity-check codes with the parity based approach to the lossless (or near lossless) distributed joint source channel coding (DJSCC) with the decoder side information for the non-uniform sources over the asymmetric memoryless transmission channel. By using an equivalent channel coding model, which consists of two parallel subchannels: a correlation and a transmission sub-channel, respectively, they derive the codeword averaged density evolution (DE) for the DJSCC with the decoder side information for the asymmetrically correlated non-uniform sources over the asymmetric memoryless transmission channel. A new code ensemble definition of the irregular codes is introduced to distinguish between the source and the parity variable nodes, respectively. Extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the codeword averaged DE.

A Cost-Efficient Real-Time 25 Mb/s System for LED-UOWC: Design, channel coding, FPGA Implementation, and Characterization

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a cost-efficient real-time field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based system for underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) at a data rate up to 25 Mb/s over a 10 m underwater channel. The transmitter of the system employs a commercial blue LED as a modulation light source and an FPGA unit for transmitter baseband signal processing, and an avalanche photo diode cascaded with an FPGA unit for receiver baseband signal processing at the receiver side. We also suggest a simplified system model to characterize underwater optical link. Three types of hard-decision forward error correction codes are introduced to investigate the impact on the receiver sensitivity in long distance transmission cases. By adding additional link attenuation, we experimentally measure the attenuation coefficients for different water conditions. Based on the measured results, the achievable link distance for clear ocean water is estimated up to 118 m at the transmitted electrical power of 30 dBm. The proposed UOWC system takes both implementation complexity and cost into consideration and also provides a significant guidance to the future real-time high-speed underwater optical communications.

The usage of artificial intelligence and machine learning in wireless communications is the stepping stone towards a technological breakthrough in the current limitations of wireless communication systems. The trend of future coding schemes towards 6G appears to be based on rateless schemes and machine learning. channel coding is important when transmitting data or information reliably as it provides error-correcting purposes. However, there is still a demand for more research regarding machine learning for channel coding. There is also a lack of a specific term or classification for existing machine learning applications for channel coding. This paper explores and compiles current trending machine learning techniques for channel coding. We are also introducing and proposing a new type of machine learning classification for channel coding purposes, as well as surveying some of the papers that fall under the respective class. This paper also discusses current challenges and future machine learning trends for channel coding, which are expected to impact future wireless communications development, especially in channel coding advancements.
