In this paper computer generated models to teach programminglanguages are defined and examined. The memory modeling, the program generation and the flowchart creation are presented. Generation and transformation of pictorial structures for each model is analyzed. The application of these models to computer-assisted instruction is shown. Finally further research in the area is suggested.

The development of formal, descriptive, and procedural notations has become a practical concern within the field of music now that computers are being applied to musical tasks. Music combines the real-time demands of performance with the intellectual demands of highly developed symbolic systems that are quite different from natural language. The richness and variety of these demands makes the programming language paradigm a natural one in the musical application of computers. This paradigm provides musicians with a fresh perspective on their work. At the same time, music is a very advanced form of human endeavor, making computer music applications a worthy challenge for computer scientists. In this paper we outline the traditional tasks and forms of representation in music, then proceed with a survey of languages that deal with music programming. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Necessary prerequisites for further development of technical diagnostics is formalization of diagnostic processes and application of computers as master components of diagnostic systems. This article deals with system specification of user-oriented languages for diagnostic applications with a view to the reference language ATLAS.

APT and other N/C computer programming languages are often used to generate N/C tapes for complex part shapes. However, BASIC and similar high-level computerlanguages may be used effectively in some circumstances. The conditions that favor use of a high-level computer language are reviewed.

The lack of flexibility of dedicated systems is the cause for the increased use of general purpose higher level programminglanguages in computer assisted instruction (CAI). To improve the construction of CAI-programs in these languages, CAI environments are suggested, supporting specific tasks (e. g. input detection, program- and learner-control, recording of dialog-data) in the form of application-oriented procedure pools that suggest also the modular arrangement of huge programs. As an example of a CAI environment the BLS-system (University of Giessen, West-Germany) for the programming language APL is presented.

Unlike minicomputer high level languages, the micro's languages do not focus on standard versions of BASIC, FORTRAN, or COBOL. Rather, they range from FORTRAN compilers written by hobbyists to state-of-the-art languages that have not been implemented on minicomputers yet. This is further muddled by the constant development of new microcomputer software. This article, the second of a series, compares the major high level languages for microcomputers as an aid in selecting a language for a particular application.

In this paper, we attempt to clarify both the terminology used to classify programminglanguages and the nature of the classificationitself. We feel that the current terminology and classification as captured in the literature is out of balance with the waythat subject programminglanguages are used. We consider the accessibility of the computational model and the importance ofthe implementation language and suggest that a re-appraisal in this context will produce a better characterisation of boththe programming language styles and their *** June 1988. revised December 1989.

This paper proposes a notation for defining functions or procedures in such a way that their termination is guaranteed by the scope rules. It uses an extension of case expressions. Suggested uses include programminglanguages and logical languages; an application is also given to the problem of proving inequations from initial algebra specifications.
