Hunter and Ready Inc. manufactures a family of silicon software components that greatly eases the burden of developing and maintaining embedded microprocessor software. VRTX (the versatile real-time executive, pronounced 'vertex') is the central member of that family;it implements the critical kernel services needed when developing a real-time application. IOX, the input/output executive, is the newest member of Hunter and Ready's expanding family of software components. IOX extends VRTX's kernel functions with a powerful set of device level I/O facilities that can significantly decrease system development time.

Logistics has traditionally been a field concerned only with hardware support. The proliferation of embedded microprocessors in modern military and commercial aircraft predicts continued widespread use of this technology. Logistics support of this hardware must include software support. While essentially different in nature from hardware, proven logistics concepts can be adapted to software support. This is an expansion into a new field for logisticians, presenting new and exciting professional challenges.

It is well known that the development and use of complex systems was stifled by the inadequacy of ordinary programming languages. Music Composition and Synthesis (MCS) by computer offers an appropriate example of this 'complexity barrier'. Object-Oriented programming matches a lot of MCS requirements: an object-oriented programming environment, called Formes, has been developed at IRCAM, including original features like precise control of Time and Hierarchy of events. In this paper the structure and implementation of the system Formes are presented. Particular attention is given to a functional approach of message passing and an extension of the class concept to real-time control structure. Two musical examples and a meta-circular definition of Formes are developed.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) has developed a Transportable Applications Executive (TAE) for use in implementing portable applications software that can be shared by different research projects. Since many of the supported disciplines require the interactive display and manipulation of remotely sensed images, a device independent Display Management Subsystem (DMS) is being written as a TAE extension. The DMS attempts to abstract and standardize the device dependent functions that are used in the display and manipulation of image data on image analysis terminals. This paper explores the structure of DMS and the interface routines that are available to the applications programmer for use in developing a set of portable image display utility programs.

Two new data management features have been installed in the April 1984 release of NASTRAN. These two features are the Rigid Format Data Base and the 'READFILE' capability. The Rigid Format Data Base is stored on external files in card-image format and can be easily maintained and expanded by the use of standard text editors. This data base provides the user and the NASTRAN maintenance contractor with an easy means for making changes to a Rigid Format or for generating new Rigid Formats without unnecessary compilations and link editing of NASTRAN. The 'READFILE' capability allows a user to reference an external secondary file from the NASTRAN primary input file and to read data from this secondary file. There is no limit to the number of external secondary files that may be referenced and read. 7 refs.

Models of decision making behavior in complex systems are hampered by an incomplete understanding of the way in which operators internally represent information about decision tasks. This paper describes the development and evaluation of a methodology for assessing mental models by humans to represent complex decision tasks. The methodology is based on the analysis of proximity measures using multidimensional scaling (MDS). Six subjects were trained to classify a visually presented stimulus into one of four categories. The MDS methodology was used to track the evolution of the subject's internal model and identify the dimensional information used to classify the stimuli. The relation between the dimensional information revealed by the analysis and subject performance is discussed.

This paper discusses the Air Force Group Technology Support Software (GTSS) and its implementation for the repair process planning of undersea torpedoes. GTSS is described as a decision table processor with flexible capabilities. GTSS has been tailored and installed to classify and retrieve standard process plans. Using GTSS, process planners will experience an elimination of manual preparation of plans, an increase in productivity and an increase in process plan standardization.
