Collagen-like peptides (CLPs), also known as collagen-mimetic peptides (CMPs), are short synthetic peptides that mimic the triple helical conformation of native collagens. Traditionally, CLPs have been widely used in deciphering the chemical basis for collagen triple helix stabilization, mimicking collagen fibril formation and fabricating other higher-order supramolecular self-assemblies. While CLPs have been used extensively for elucidation of the assembly of native collagens, less work has been reported on the use of CLP polymer and CLP peptide conjugates in the production of responsive assemblies. CLP triple helices have been used as physical cross links in CLP polymer hydrogels with predesigned thermoresponsiveness. The more recently reported ability of CLP to target native collagens via triple helix hybridization has further inspired the production of CLP polymer and CLP peptide bioconjugates and the employment of these conjugates in generating welldefined nanostructures for targeting collagen substrates. This review summarizes the current progress and potential of using CLPs in biomedical arenas and is intended to serve as a general guide for designing CLP-containing biomaterials.

A framework to incorporate non-monotonic reasoning into constraint logic programming

Impressive work has been done in the last years concerning the meaning of negation and disjunction in logic programs, but most of this research concentrated on propositional programs only. While it suffices to consider the propositional case for investigating general properties and the overall behavior of a semantics, we feel that for real applications and for computational purposes an implementation should be able to handle first-order programs without grounding them. In this paper we present a theoretical framework by defining a calculus of program transformations that apply directly to rules with variables and function symbols. Our main results are that (a) this calculus is weakly confluent for arbitrary programs (ie., it has the normal form property), (b) it is weakly terminating for Datalog(V,inverted left perpendicular) programs, (c) for finite ground programs it is equivalent to a weakly terminating calculus introduced by Brass and Dix (1995), and (d) it approximates a generalization of Disjunctive Well-founded semantics (D-WFS) for arbitrary programs. We achieve this by transforming program rules into rules with equational constraints thereby using heavily methods and techniques from constraint logic programming (CLP). In particular, disconnection-methods play a crucial role. In principle, any constraint theory known from CLP can be exploited in the context of non-monotonic reasoning, not only equational constraints over the Herbrand domain. However, the respective constraint solver must be able to treat negative constraints of the considered constraint domain. CLP Minimum classifications raise issues concerning occupational safety and health

The CLP Regulation has not only introduced new pictograms and hazard statements, but the classification criteria on which they are based have also shifted in certain hazard categories, e.g. acute toxicity. Therefore it is not possible to translate the existing classification under the Dangerous Substances Directive directly into the new one under CLP. For this change, the legislator has created the mechanism of minimum classification and the translation table (Annex VI and VII, CLP). This ebables that a substance to be classified in the less dangerous hazard category if the classifier has no knowledge to the contrary. Annex VI lists the substances with so-called harmonised classification. For these substances, the harmonised classification is legally binding. In this list, an asterisk in the hazard category concerned indicates a substance with a minimum classification. They can therefore be more hazardous than suggested by the harmonised classification. In this study, it has been possible to show on the basis of the hazard classes "acute toxicity" (dermal exposure and inhalation) that this is the case to a considerable extent - i.e. these substances are falsely given a minimum classification and thus appear to be less hazardous than they actually are. The incorrect classification of substances can lead to considerable consequences for occupational safety & health and plant safety as protective measures at workplaces and safety requirements for plants are related to the substance classification.

Calcium Looping Process (CLP) for Enhanced Noncatalytic Hydrogen Production with integrated Carbon Dioxide Capture

The calcium looping process (CLP) is one of the clean coal technologies being developed for the production of hydrogen (H-2) and electricity from coal-derived syngas. It integrates the water-gas shift reaction with in situ carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur, and halide removal in a single-stage reactor. In the CLP, a regenerable calcium-based sorbent is used to react with and remove CO2, sulfur, and halide impurities from the synthesis gas during the production of H-2. The removal of CO2 creates a favorable equilibrium and drives the water gas shift reaction forward per Le Chatelier's principle enabling the production of high-purity H-2. In this investigation, the feasibility and optimum process conditions for the production of H-2 in the absence of a water gas shift catalyst have been described. Calcium oxide (CaO) sorbent has been found to enhance H-2 yield to a large extent even in the absence of a water-gas shift catalyst. Specifically, at high pressures, high carbon monoxide (CO) conversion and H-2 purity ( > 99%) have been obtained in the absence of a water-gas shift catalyst at near-stoichiometric steam to carbon (S:C) ratios.

The liver is an important organ that is particularly involved in the lipid metabolism of the organism. Thus, high interest is nowadays focused on the lipid composition of the liver and particularly the liver parenchymal cells, the hepatocytes. Hepatocytes contain common phospholipids (PL) such as phosphatidylcholines, -ethanolamines and -inositols, for instance, that can be easily analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) even without previous separation of the PL mixture. However, in addition to common PL, hepatocytes possess also significant amounts of cardiolipin (CLP). The MS analysis of this PL is quite challenging because it (a) has a higher mass than common lipids and (b) possesses a higher negative charge. We will show here that caution is required if CLP is analyzed directly from the total lipid extract because PC dimers may be interpreted as cardiolipins if the positive ion MALDI mass spectra are analyzed. Protozoan-Induced Regulation of Cyclic Lipopeptide Biosynthesis Is an Effective Predation Defense Mechanism for Pseudomonas fluorescens

Environmental bacteria are exposed to a myriad of biotic interactions that influence their function and survival. The grazing activity of protozoan predators significantly impacts the dynamics, diversification, and evolution of bacterial communities in soil ecosystems. To evade protozoan predation, bacteria employ various defense strategies. Soil-dwelling Pseudomonas fluorescens strains SS101 and SBW25 produce the cyclic lipopeptide surfactants (CLPs) massetolide and viscosin, respectively, in a quorum-sensing-independent manner. In this study, CLP production was shown to protect these bacteria from protozoan predation as, compared to CLP-deficient mutants, strains SS101 and SBW25 exhibited resistance to grazing by Naegleria americana in vitro and superior persistence in soil in the presence of this bacterial predator. In the wheat rhizosphere, CLP-producing strains had a direct deleterious impact on the survival of N. americana. In vitro assays further showed that N. americana was three times more sensitive to viscosin than to massetolide and that exposure of strain SS101 or SBW25 to this protozoan resulted in upregulation of CLP biosynthesis genes. Enhanced expression of the massABC and viscABC genes did not require physical contact between the two organisms as gene expression levels were up to threefold higher in bacterial cells harvested 1 cm from feeding protozoans than in cells collected 4 cm from feeding protozoans. These findings document a new natural function of CLPs and highlight that bacterium-protozoan interactions can result in activation of an antipredator response in prey populations.

Potential of cassava leaves in human nutrition: A review

Cassava is mainly grown for its roots whereas leaves are mostly considered as a byproduct. Cassava leaves are a rich source of protein, minerals, and vitamins. However, the presence of antinutrients and cyanogenic glucosides are the major drawbacks in cassava leaves which limit its human consumption. These antinutrients and toxic compounds of cassava leaves cause various diseases depending on the consumption level. Hence these antinutrients and toxic potential of cassava leaves should be addressed during cassava leaf processing (CLP) before human consumption. Several CLP methods have been developed but every method has its own limitations. Some CLP methods successfully detoxify cassava leaves but simultaneously destroy the nutrients. Efforts have also been made for cassava leaf protein extraction in the form of cassava leaf protein concentrate (CLPC) but protein recovery was very low. This review summarizes the nutrient, antinutrient and toxic composition of cassava leaves, CLPC, different CLP methods, human consumption and diseases caused by cassava leaves. Furthermore, recommendations have been made in order to encourage cassava leaves consumption as an important source of protein and micronutrients.

This paper is an overview of our results on the application of abstract interpretation concepts to various problems related to the verification of logic programs. These include the systematic design of semantics modeling various proof methods and the characterization of assertions as abstract domains. We derive an assertion based verification method and we show two instances based on different assertion languages: a decidable assertion language and CLP used as an assertion language. Magnetic properties of loess deposits in Australia and their environmental significance

There are vast dry areas in Australia, but few loess sections have been reported. Mackenzie's Waterholes Creek (MWC) profile in New South Wales was the deepest and first dated loess profile. In this paper, various measurements of magnetic parameters from MWC were carried out and comparison was made with those of Luochuan profile, which lies in the central Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). The types of magnetic minerals are similar to the CLP: magnetite, maghemite, limonite and hematite. However, the magnetic properties of the Australian aeolian sediment are quite different. Frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility (chi(fd)%) is rather high, while values of magnetic susceptibility (chi) are low. The relative content of hard (paramagnetic) magnetic components is much higher than CLP, whereas the content of maghemite and hematite is much less. Furthermore hard magnetic minerals increase with depth, while soft maghemite decrease with depth. Maghemite is more sensitive than magnetite under pedogenic condition of waterlogged environments. It increases along with enhancement of magnetic susceptibility in Luochuan section;however, decreases in MWC profile. This very likely indicates that the pedogenesic processes in MWC took place under an environment in which maghemite/magnetite were unstable. The modern annual precipitation in the MWC area is 924 mm, which is about 300 mm higher than that in Luochuan. That extra moisture may lead MWC to exceed the stable range for maghemite/magnetite. Those minerals therefore were gradually converted to more stable goethite, causing magnetic susceptibility to decrease. Fe and Mn nodules are abundant in the lower part of section, implying mildly reducing conditions that allowed Fe and Mn to be mobilised and enriched in near the oxidation front, indicating that under waterlogged and reducing conditions wind-blown maghemite/magnetite were transformed to iron hydroxides, such as goethite/limonite, or other paramagnetic minerals, resulting in re

Intestinal Enterococcus faecium Colonization Improves Host Defense during Polymicrobial Peritonitis

Background. Vancomycin-resistant (VR) Enterococcus faecium is increasingly found to colonize and infect hospitalized patients. Enterococci are frequently isolated from polymicrobial infections originating from the intestines. The impact of VR E. faecium on these infections and vice versa is not clear. Methods. Mice were intestinally colonized with VR E. faecium during oral vancomycin treatment;control mice received oral vancomycin only. Fourteen days later, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) was performed in all mice to induce polymicrobial peritonitis in the presence or absence of VR E. faecium colonization. Results. VR E. faecium colonization per se was not associated with systemic dissemination of VR E. faecium. CLP resulted in systemic VR E. faecium infection in all VR E. faecium-colonized mice, with high VR E. faecium loads in peritoneal lavage fluid, blood, liver, and lungs. Forty-eight hours after CLP, mice infected with VR E. faecium had significantly lower bacterial loads in all organs tested than mice not infected with VR E. faecium. Additionally, lower inflammatory parameters were measured in VR E. faecium-infected mice. CLP induced transient liver and kidney damage, with a faster recovery in VR E. faecium-colonized mice. Conclusions. VR E. faecium infection, originating from a natural source ( the intestinal tract), does not worsen the outcome of CLP-induced polymicrobial peritonitis and sepsis but rather facilitates bacterial clearance and attenuates host inflammatory responses.
