The efficient and timely distribution of freight goods is critical for supporting the demands of modern urban areas. Optimum freight ensures the survival and development of urban areas. In the contemporary logistic there are two main distribution strategies: direct distribution and multi-echelon distribution. In the direct distribution, means of transport, starting from the main distribution center, bring their freight directly to the delivery points, while in the multi-echelon systems, freight is delivered from the main distribution center to the delivery points through intermediate points (local warehouses, satellites). This study presents a concept and implementation of a integrated approach to modeling and optimization the MultiEchelon Systems. In the proposed approach, two methods of constraint logic programming (CLP) and mathematical programming (MP) were integrated and hybridized. The proposed hybrid approach will be compared with classical mathematical programming on the same data sets (known benchmarks) for illustrative multi-echelon model -TwoEchelon Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (2E-CVRP).

Endothelial cell protein C receptor (EPCR) plays an important role in coagulation and inflammation. EPCR can be shed from the cell surface, and this is mediated by tumor necrosis factor-α-converting enzyme (TACE). Piperlonguminine (PL), an important component of Piper longum fruits, is known to exhibit antihyperlipidemic, antiplatelet, and antimelanogenesis activities. However, little is known about the effects of PL on EPCR shedding. Here, we investigated this issue by monitoring the effects of PL on phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and on cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-mediated EPCR shedding and underlying mechanisms. PL induced potent inhibition of PMA, and CLP induced EPCR shedding through suppression of TACE expression. And treatment with PL resulted in reduced PMA-stimulated phosphorylation of p38, extracellular regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). Given these results, PL might have potential as an anti-sEPCR shedding reagent against PMA- and CLP-mediated EPCR shedding.

Sepsis is a disease syndrome covering many different aspects of the host immune system. Our understanding of sepsis is still incomplete. Several animal models of sepsis have been developed and much of our current knowledge on the molecular basis of the disease has originated from these models. Two of the most reliable and clinically relevant rodent models to mimic human sepsis in the animal model are cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and colon ascendens stent peritonitis (CASP). © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Let G = (V, E) be a directed graph and l: V → [k] := {1,...,k} a level assignment such that l(u) < l(v) for all directed edges (u, v) ∈ E. A level planar drawing of G is a drawing of G where each vertex v is mapped to a unique point on the horizontal line l_i with y-coordinate l(v), and each edge is drawn as a y-monotone curve between its endpoints such that no two curves cross in their interior. In the problem CONSTRAINED LEVEL PLANARITY (CLP for short), we are further given a partial ordering γ_i of V_i := l~(-1) (i) for i ∈ [k], and we seek a level planar drawing where the order of the vertices on l_i is a linear extension of γ_i. A special case of this is the problem PARTIAL LEVEL PLANARITY (PLP for short), where we are asked to extend a given level-planar drawing H of a subgraph H {is contained in} G to a complete drawing G of G without modifying the given drawing, i.e., the restriction of Q to H must coincide with H. We give a simple polynomial-time algorithm with running time O(n~5) for CLP of single-source graphs that is based on a simplified version of an existing level-planarity testing algorithm for single-source graphs. We introduce a modified type of PQ-tree data structure that is capable of efficiently handling the arising constraints to improve the running time to O(n + kl), where l is the size of the constraints. We complement this result by showing that PLP is NP-complete even in very restricted cases. In particular, PLP remains NP-complete even when G is a subdivision of a triconnected planar graph with bounded degree.

Historically, CLP had been employing renowned cable manufacturers from locations like European countries or Japan due to their obvious technological advantage and experience. Those cable manufacturers were capable of supplying a full spectrum of cables and accessories, giving assurance of good quality, convenience to project management and clear demarcation of accountabilities. The ever-changing business environment in the international HV cable supply market had however pushed the leading suppliers into forming joint ventures with local partners in developing countries to adapt to changing market requirements and to maintain a competitive advantage. They set up their cable manufacturing plants in the low-cost production locations and allowed technology transfer to their local partners starting from decades ago. The local partners absorbed foreign technology, sharpened their skill set and innovated in their own right to supply quality and reliable products at competitive price level. To grasp the market opportunity, CLP commissioned a cross-functional taskforce to develop a systematic approach in sourcing price-competitive yet quality suppliers around the globe, followed by establishing collaborative partnership with the suppliers. As a result, CLP managed to engage some capable medium-sized transmission cable manufacturers from a more diversified supply base, meeting its multi-dimensional business objectives such as cost, quality and timeliness. Another key benefit derived from the highly collaborative relationship with the medium-sized manufacturers is their full devotion to tailor services for CLP. For instance, a local manufacturer is willing to tailor slim cable accessories under CLP's support for managing the heavily congested installation environment in Hong Kong, while expanding its own product range for better competitiveness. With a view to providing a safe working environment and upholding a reliable distribution network, CLP Power undertook an 11kV Ageing Switchgear Refurbishment program (for a specific switchboard type) in 2008. The refurbishment program includes the replacement of the vacuum circuit breaker trolleys with age of 25 years or more, installation of humidity sensor controller and enhancement of internal-arc protection of the switchboard. In summary, the retrofit program on the 11kV switchboard delivers the Operation and Maintenance benefits through: 1. reinforcing the system security and integrity by replacing ageing vacuum circuit breaker trolleys. 2. achieving a higher degree of operational safety with enhanced internal arc protection implementation. 3. encouraging recycling of parts as one of the environmental initiatives. This paper discusses CLP Power's experience on the 11kV switchboard refurbishment program. The benefits brought by the program as well as challenges experienced are also highlighted.

Overhead lines (OHL) operating at 400kV, form the backbone of CLP Power's transmission network. Unlike underground cables, overhead lines are vulnerable to external environmental attacks, such as adverse weather, high humidity, pollution, ground stability, vegetation, and flying objects etc. To ensure high reliability and availability of the overhead lines for bulk electricity transmission, cost effective maintenance strategies including the application of specific accessories and materials, such as lightning arrestor and high voltage insulation coating (HVIC) as well as tower refurbishment to mitigate the risks caused by lightning, pollution and typhoon are essential. CLP Power (CLPP) has adopted both preventive and condition-based strategies for Transmission overhead line (TOHL) maintenance for many years and has accumulated a lot of valuable experience and knowledge on the implementation of various maintenance and refurbishment practices. These practices have led to the achievement of world class service performance and contributed in the long term economic growth of Hong Kong.

In this paper we consider distributed real-time embedded systems in which confidentiality of the internal communication is critical. We present an approach to efficiently implement cryptographic algorithms by using hardware/software co-design techniques. The objective is to find the minimal hardware overhead and corresponding process mapping for encryption and decryption tasks of the system, so that the confidentiality requirements for the messages transmitted over the internal communication bus are fulfilled, and time constraints are satisfied. Towards this, we formulate the optimization problems using Constraint Logic programming (CLP), which returns optimal solutions. However, CLP executions are computationally expensive and, hence, efficient heuristics are proposed as an alternative. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed heuristic approaches.

Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) is among the most frequent congenital abnormalities. The impaired facial development affects the articulation, with different phonemes being impacted inhomogeneously among different patients. This work focuses on automatic phoneme analysis of children with CLP for a detailed diagnosis and therapy control. In clinical routine, the state-of-the-art evaluation is based on perceptual evaluations. Perceptual ratings act as ground-truth throughout this work, with the goal to build an automatic system that is as reliable as humans. We propose two different automatic systems focusing on modeling the articulatory space of a speaker: one system models a speaker by a GMM, the other system employs a speech recognition system and estimates fMLLR matrices for each speaker. SVR is then used to predict the perceptual ratings. We show that the fMLLR-based system is able to achieve automatic phoneme evaluation results that are in the same range as perceptual inter-rater-agreements.

Within telecommunications development it is vital to have frameworks and systems to replay complicated scenarios on equipment under test, often there are not enough available scenarios. In this paper we study the problem of testing a test harness, which replays scenarios and analyses protocol logs for the Public Warning System service, which is a part of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G standard. Protocol logs are sequences of messages with timestamps;and are generated by different mobile network entities. In our case study we focus on user equipment protocol logs. In order to test the test harness we require that logs have both incorrect and correct behaviour. It is easy to collect logs from real system runs, but these logs do not show much variation in the behaviour of system under test. We present an approach where we use constraint logic programming (CLP) for both modelling and test generation, where each test case is a protocol log. In this case study, we uncovered previously unknown faults in the test harness.
