BPNN-assisted control algorithm application to a super large cable-net structure of active FAST reflector system

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), recognized as the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, has made significant contributions to astronomical observations. As an essential component of the FAST system, the super-large cable-net structure with a 500 m diameter necessitates the rapid and simultaneous control of its 2225 actuator strokes to adjust to the desired parabolic shape for observation. Existing control algorithms require improvement to meet these complex requirements. Consequently, this study develops a control algorithm utilizing a backpropagation neural network (BPNN) and integrates it into the high-precision control of the 2225 actuator strokes of the super-large cable-net structure. The superiority of the BPNN model is thoroughly evaluated in terms of prediction accuracy, modeling efficiency, and computing speed, compared against the grid interpolation algorithm currently employed in the FAST system. The comparative analysis underscores the feasibility and effectiveness of the established BPNN model in predicting the profile shape of the super-large cable-net structure. Notably, the BPNN model saves approximately 57 days of modeling time and increases computational efficiency by 65.7 %, while also improving prediction accuracies across various operating conditions. This outcome aims to provide a practical strategy for the active and rapid control of the surface shape of the FAST system.

Dynamic analysis of the deployment for mesh reflector deployable antennas with the cable-net structure

This paper presents a dynamic analysis approach for the composite structure of a deployable truss and cable-net system. An Elastic Catenary Element is adopted to model the slack/tensioned cables. Then, from the energy standpoint, the kinetic energy, elasticity-potential energy and geopotential energy of the cable-net structure and deployable truss are derived. Thus, the flexible multi-body dynamic model of the deployable antenna is built based on the Lagrange equation. The effect of the cable-net tension on the antenna truss is discussed and compared with previous publications and a dynamic deployment analysis is performed. Both the simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the method presented.

By using the variational principle to set up the mathematical model of the reflector for the FAST, we can get the node location of the cable-net and tension of the main cable by solving highly nonlinear equations of the mathematical model. A new layer-by-layer substitution approach has been proposed for solving the highly nonlinear equations, through the calculation and simulation it verifies the correctness of this method.

Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is supported by cable-net structure, which enables its surface to form a paraboloid in real time under active control. FAST is now entering project construction and implement stage, however there are always a considerable amount of errors existed in practice which would result in the deviation of the structure from its ideal model. Therefore, structural parameter sensitivity analysis was indispensable discussed. In the paper, the variation ranges of structural parameters were rationally determined. Base on local sensitivity analysis and global sensitivity analysis method, Using the finite element model investigated the influence of different structural parameters change on the static behavior, gets the conclusions that the impact of several key design parameters on the tension force of cable-net is large. The results indicate that of all types of the structural parameters, the error of the length of cable plays the most important role, and the global sensitivity analysis indicates that the tension force range of cable-net is -18% to 27%.

A unique large-span cable-net structure, as the key unit of the active reflector system of FAST, is specially introduced. The cable-net structure contains a huge cable mesh and thousands of down-tied cables driven by hydraulic actuators. The mesh is normally prestressed to form a 500m-aperture base sphere, but some part may further change its shape to form paraboloid for the purpose of good illumination during FAST works. Such shape change or deformation requires that hundreds of hydraulic actuators drive coordinately. Therefore deformation strategy is necessary to be discussed in details on how much each actuator should stretch out or draw back to paraboloid. Its simulation based on finite element method is further given for demonstration. The regular strategy works well if the illumination area can be limited within the cable mesh. Otherwise, it may induce such structural dangers as slack cable, over-stressed cable or fatigue failure. A new strategy is then developed to crack such problem. It first follows the regular strategy, then checks and finds out all the potentially dangerous cables. The stresses of these dangerous cables are controlled in the safe range via adjusting the related down-tied cables. A comparative simulation result with the measurement on site verifies its effectiveness.

Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is designed to be supported by geodesic form cable-net structure which is suspended from the ring beam. Based on the initial design, the present work has performed a further optimization to reduce the types and quantity of the connections between the cable-net and the ring beam. Furthermore, the finite element model has been established to study the influence of the deadweight of the reflector element on the force distribution of the cable-net structure, and the sensitivity of angle deviation of down tied cable to the control accuracy of cable net deformation has also been discussed.

Double-Layer cable-net structures for Deployable Umbrella Reflectors

The umbrella cable-net structure is one of the most popular forms for deployable space reflectors and has been successfully applied to many in-orbit deployable antennas. The umbrella ribs only provide open support for the cable net, so designing the geometric shape and the internal tension of the umbrella cable-net structure is complex. This paper suggests several double-layer cable-net structures for a deployable umbrella reflector. First, a typical composition of the umbrella reflector was introduced and the design basis of its geometric topology was further discussed. Then, two methods for the static equilibrium analysis of the cable-net structure were introduced for the mechanical calculation of the cable-net structure. Next, three types of the cable-net structure-wedge-shaped/wedge-shaped (W/W), triangular/triangular (T/T), and triangular/wedge-shaped (T/W)-were put forward. The three cable-net types were applied to a reflector and their performances were analyzed and compared with each other to demonstrate their feasibility and applicability.

The structural characteristics of cable-net and the non-linear finite element method are presented. The model of Sichuan gymnasium cable-net is built by applying Ansys software, and based on this model, characteristics of structural static and dynamic performance are analyzed due to partial cable slackening. The variation rules are obtained by the results, which provide ideas to put in practice in the damage detection of cable-net.

Nonlinear structural behavior and vibration control of a double curved cable net under the dynamic excitations

The paper is regarding to the structural dynamics of a saddle shaped cable-net structure with two high points and two low points at the corners. The net cables are pre-stressed by stretching the four edge cables that are supported at the corner points. A series of parametric nonlinear dynamic analysis is utilized to evaluate the dynamic response of the system under the different structural masses and geometries, pretensions and alignments of cables and the amplitudes of dynamic excitation. An equivalent single-degree-of-freedom model is presented as a simplified method to estimate the dynamic response of the full finite element model. The simulation results show that the equivalent model can accurately estimate the displacement response of multi-degree-of-freedom model under dynamic excitation. Furthermore, a nonlinear active control algorithm is applied to decrease the structural response under the transient wind excitation and the results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

Performance Coordination of structure and Deployment Properties of Deployable Antenna

The cable-net structure is an important part of the deployable mesh antenna, which determines the accuracy of the reflector surface and also has a nonnegligible influence on the deployment of the antenna. In this study, the AstroMesh antenna (Astro Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, Oxnard, California) is investigated. First, this influence is studied from the perspective of work. Then, the driving force for the deployment of the antenna is deduced considering the nonlinear factors, such as the cable-net and friction, according to the conservation of energy. Moreover, the effects of the cable force and the height of the rear net on the driving force are studied. According to the aforementioned research, an optimization model of the cable-net structure is proposed. By designing the cable net reasonably, the performance of work and the deployment for the antenna are coordinated well. Finally, according to the prototype of a 2-m-aperture deployable AstroMesh antenna, different cable-net structures are designed. The corresponding peak value of the driving force and the fundamental frequency of the deployed antenna are measured. The experimental results verify the validity of the optimization method.
