Pedestrians are the most essential and important component of traffic systems. The pedestrian injury and fatality rates are at a high level due to the severe traffic crashes. Therefore, effective strategies should be implemented to enhance pedestrian safety. However, there is a lack of feasible methods to collect pedestrian data for pedestrian safety study. And the effectiveness of the existing methods may decrease along with the increasing complexity of the traffic system. To ensure pedestrian safety even in crowded scenes, a head-based pedestrian detection and counting method is proposed in this paper to capture the data of pedestrians. From the test results, several important attributes such as crowd density, location, and speed can be obtained. Instead of collecting the full bodies of pedestrians, human heads are used in our study to avoid the occlusion problem happened in crowded scenes. After setting the detection region, head detection is started by applying mixed color algorithm to locate candidate head area and then using canny algorithm and Hough transform to extract target contour and locate head precisely. Finally, the minimum distance method is utilized to match and count the effective heads. The detection results compared with manual count indicate its extremely accurate performance. This method demonstrates the proposed approach which is useful and effective for crowded pedestrian detection and counting, and can be applied in real-world traffic system to detect pedestrians and prevent pedestrian accidents.

This Paper presents an object tracking system based on FPGA using canny edge detection algorithm. The system consists of canny edge detection algorithm implemented on FPGA kit to identify edges of real time object. Also a tracking and reorganization of object is done by Smartphone camera. canny edge detection algorithm is key stage in image processing and object recognizing application. The field programmable gate array contains logic componants that can be programmed to perform complex mathematical functions making them highly suitable for the implementation of matrix algorithm. Individual frames acquired from the target video are fed into the FPGA. These are then subject to segmentation, threasholding, filtering stages. Following these the object is tracked by comparing the background frame and the processed updated frame containing the new location of the target. The result of the FPGA implementation in tracking a moving object were found to be correct and suitable for object tracking.

Synergy of optimum illumination and image processing techniques is a very important aspect which needs to be incorporated in a machine vision environment to improve the durability of the lighting unit and also to conserve power requirements. This research work presents a novel way to optimize lighting requirements in a machine vision system using image feature analysis and image processing algorithms for texture identification. The practical implementation could be considered for automated machine vision environment for object surface inspection and quality monitoring.

Vision-based gesture recognition is a key technique to achieve a new generation of human-computer interaction. As few text input search system by gesture recognition is developed, based on the existing gesture recognition techniques, we use the gestures which are corresponding to the Chinese letters and numbers as input gesture and use Microsoft kinect to obtain depth image to conduct hand gesture segmentation. First, the edge of the gesture is extracted by canny algorithm, and then the feature is extracted based on wavelet moment. Finally the gesture letters are obtained. Achieved the text input system based on gesture recognition. Experiments show that the system is able to achieve Chinese characters accurately and effectively.

In this paper, we propose a new unsupervised segmentation method for hyperspectral images using edge fusion. We first remove noisy spectral band images by examining the correlations between the spectral bands. Then, the canny algorithm is applied to the retained images. This procedure produces a number of edge images. To combine these edge images, we compute an average edge image and then apply a thresholding operation to obtain a binary edge image. By applying dilation and region filling procedures to the binary edge image, we finally obtain a segmented image. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm produced satisfactory segmentation results without requiring user input.

Nowadays, infrared imaging systems play important roles in the field of civil and military. Especially small infrared target detecting and recognizing is one of the most widely use. The capability of target- detection algorithm is an important index of the system. This paper presents a novel algorithm for detecting a small moving target in infrared (IR) image sequences and finding its mass center, and recording the target moving track. In the target searching and recognizing algorithm of infrared image sequences, infrared image sequence is broken into frames, filtered by spatial filter algorithm, which helped to reduce granular noise. We use the canny algorithm factor to find the edge of the target, and the result of detecting target edge is process by ecological open-loop filter method, including erosion and dilation algorithm with a same scale. Then, the candidate targets are recognized and saved temporarily. In order to get the mass centers of the candidate targets, the valid area of the candidate targets is defined by different weight valves, and then the mass centers are calculated by weighted average algorithm, and record per frame. After got several frames mass centers of the candidate targets, we get rid of the non-target mass centers by frame difference algorithm, and get the real mass center of the small moving infrared target. If the background is observed for enough time, the effect of frame difference algorithm is more efficiency. Finally, the moving track of the target is found out. The infrared (IR) image sequences used here are obtained through an IR camera in the laboratory, which uses a 288*384 silicon infrared image sensor produced by ULIS company. The methods referred above are realized and simulated on compute with Matlab. Theory analysis and experiments prove the method is reasonable and efficient.

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a computational photography technology that can enhance the legibility and the fine details of the sample. Colorless trace is a special kind of trace with shallow depth and its grayscale is similar to the background. It is difficult to perceive details of these traces by traditional observation and detection methods. In this paper, we propose some improved detection methods which combine RTI with the canny algorithm to get more details of colorless trace. The threshold is one of the key factors which affect the performance of the canny algorithm so we put forward a threshold selection method based on the gradient histogram of the image. Three detection methods that combine RTI with the improved canny algorithm are proposed in this paper. The experimental results show that these detection methods can extract weak and colorless traces effectively, and would have great potential application in criminal investigation.

An algorithm to locate sea-sky line in infrared image with sea-sky background is suggested in this paper. In this algorithm, the modified canny method is combined with a median filter, its two thresholds are designed to be adaptive based on the properties of these infrared images. A criterion is set up to distinguish the sky-sea line from other objects in an image. The complete algorithm for locating the sky-sea line is given, it was tested in a simulating platform by C language combined with assemble language (C6201).

For the purpose of accurately inspecting and measuring perpendicularity of column elements on circuit board,a sub-pixel position technology-based perpendicularity identification method which combines centroid registration of edge contour is *** method,first obtains element's pixel edge of pre-treated pictures using improved canny algorithm,then rejects noise point and interference edge through edge track method and numbers the elements at *** element's sub-pixel edge is obtained at the edge subject to crude extraction with the aid of Zernike moment *** the basis of this,the minimum circumscribed rectangle of the element's contour is obtained to correct the edge and get the areal *** registration between the centroid of the element on PCB board for test purpose and the standard centroid,so as to inspect and measure perpendicularity of each element according to displacement of the *** has shown that the method mentioned herein can not only measure the welding skew but also is complete with high identification accuracy.

An FPGA-based approach is proposed to build an augmented reality system in order to aid people affected by a visual disorder known as tunnel vision. The aim is to increase the user's knowledge of his environment by superimposing on his own view useful information obtained with image processing. Two different alternatives have been explored to perform the required image processing: a specific purpose algorithm to extract edge detection information, and a cellular neural network with the suitable template. Their implementations in reconfigurable hardware pursue to take advantage of the performance and flexibility that show modern FPGAs. This paper describes the hardware implementation of both the canny algorithm and the cellular neural network, and the overall system architecture. Results of the implementations and examples of the system functionality are presented.
