This paper studies principle of the traditional canny edge detection algorithm and the existing problems. Some solutions toward the problems are also proposed. The improvement methods consisted of two parts. On the one hand, as canny edge algorithm itself does not have strong noise immunity while ensuring edge positioning accuracy, an adaptive median filter denoising program based on the canny Gaussian filter is proposed to enhance the canny algorithm filter performance. On the other hand, given the canny algorithm high and low threshold parameter is not determined by the feature information of the image edge, but rather set manually which does not have the adaptive ability, this paper proposes an adaptive threshold setting scheme for high and low thresholds to improve the adaptive ability of canny algorithm to different images.

Based on canny, a typical edge detection method, a generalized canny-Oscillation algorithm of edge detection method is proposed. However, the traditional canny algorithm bears a defect in the edge-detection of details and it is futile when noise signals are involved. To solve these problems, the group merged the oscillation theory into non-maximum suppression process in an attempt to equip the display-pixel matrices with enhanced accuracy. As can be seen in the test results, our method proves to be satisfactory and delivers better performance than traditional approaches. This strategy is still efficacious when applied to other edge-detection algorithms such as Sobel.

Battery case dimension measurement based on improved canny

The battery case is the core part of a lithium battery, the quality requirements are extremely high, and its size measurement is easily affected by personal factors, resulting in human-controlled errors. A method based on the improved canny operator is proposed to aim at the problems of low efficiency and high cost in the dimension measurement of the bottom and top of the battery case. Firstly, the image acquisition system is designed to complete the construction of the hardware platform, the camera calibration is achieved in Halcon, RGB processes the image to greyscale and grey value enhancement is used to increase the image contrast, and the improved bilateral filter denoising performs the edge detection, the threshold segmentation and the improved canny operator to achieve the sub-pixel level size measurement and ensure the accuracy of the edge positioning. Comparison experiments show that the absolute error of the top and bottom diameters of the battery case measured by the algorithm in this paper is less than 0.007 mm, the relative error is less than 0.06 %, and the average error is within 0.0068 mm and 0.0064 mm, respectively. The measurement speed is only about 200 ms, which is much faster than that of the manual measurement of more than 7 s, and it meets the requirements of industrial applications.

This paper describes an improved canny edge detection algorithm to detect edge of infrared image better through overcoming the complexity and intensity of infrared image noise acquired by missile-borne radar seeker. Based on the traditional canny algorithm architecture, the improved Sequential Statistical Filtering (ISSF) algorithm is used to replace Gauss filtering algorithm. and the P-entropy method (PEM) and OTSU threshold (PEM and OTSU, POM) are used to self-adaptively select the two thresholds for edge extraction. Experiments show that the algorithm can eliminate noise interference better and has higher edge detection effect for infrared images.

The traditional canny edge detection method is widely used in gray image processing. However, this traditional algorithm is unable to deal with color images and the parameters in the algorithm are difficult to be determined adaptively. In this paper, an improved canny algorithm is proposed to detect edges in color image. The proposed algorithm is composed of the following steps: quaternion weighted average filter, vector Sobel gradient computation, non-maxima suppression based on interpolation, edge detection and connection. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other color image edge detection methods and can be widely used in color image processing.

The traditional canny algorithm has been applied to image edge detection. However, this traditional algorithm can't adaptively determine the filtering threshold value and it can't separate targets from background, when filtering the lower contrast image. Therefore, in response to these problems, this paper proposed an improved method on canny algorithm. Two adaptive thresholds were obtained by doing differential operation on amplitude gradient histogram. Then we connected edge points to get some generalized chains. After that, it needed to calculate their mean value to delete generalized chains, which are smaller than the mean value. Finally, the image edge detection results were got by linear fitting method. Experimental results show that the improved algorithm is more robust to noise and it can clearly separate targets from background.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) introduces a number of new coding tools such as 35 intra prediction modes, improved coding unit structure and SAO filter and so on to improve the compression capacity of encoding. Compared with H.264/AVC, the compression performance increased by nearly 50% at the cost of the algorithm complexity increasing significantly. One of the most time-consuming part is the CU partition process which taking over 50% of the encoding time. In this paper, in order to reduce the computational pressure on the encoder side, we design an algorithm based on contour detection and SVM classifier. First, we adopt an improved canny algorithm which is special designed for CU partition task. Then, based on SVM classifier, we introduce a new CU partition decision strategy. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves about 50% time saving on average with negligible loss of coding efficiency compared with HEVC reference software HM16.0.

Traditional canny edge detection algorithm uses a global threshold selection method, when large changes are in the background of the image and the target gray, global threshold method may lose some local edge information. For this problem, this paper therefore proposes an adaptive dynamic threshold improved canny edge detection algorithm. The method uses image gradient variance as the criterion of the image block according to the four forks tree principle, then uses the Otsu method to get the corresponding sub-block threshold value for each sub-block, and obtains threshold value matrix by interpolation, finally, gets image edge with improved edge connected algorithm. Experimental results show that, the algorithm not only has good anti-noise performance, but also better detection accuracy.

Edge detection is the key to image processing and has a significant impact on the high level of description, classification and matching of subsequent images. The traditional canny algorithm requires human intervention in the selection of Gaussian function and its fixed parameters. To solve these problems, an improved algorithm based on canny algorithm is proposed in this paper. The approach introduces the edge preserving filter to replace the original Gaussian filter, and calculates the magnitude and direction of image gradient with a new designed templates from x direction, y direction, and two oblique directions (45 degrees, 135 degrees). Meanwhile, the Otsu algorithm is used to calculate the thresholds, which avoids the problem that the thresholds need to be set repeatedly. The proposed method is successfully applied to the metal plate detection system. Experimental results show that the algorithm has good performance in bright and dark domains.
