Angle estimation in bistatic MIMO radar using improved reduced dimension capon algorithm

This paper discusses the problem of direction of departure （DOD） and direction of arrival （DOA） estimation for a bistatic multiple input multiple output （MIMO） radar, and proposes an improved reduced-dimension capon algorithm therein. Compared with the reduced-dimension capon algorithm which requires pair matching between the two-dimensional angle estimation, the pro- posed algorithm can obtain automatically paired DOD and DOA estimation without debasing the performance of angle estimation in bistatic MIMO radar. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm has a lower complexity than the reduced-dimension capon algorithm, and it is suitable for non-uniform linear arrays. The complexity of the proposed algorithm is analyzed and the Cramer-Rao bound （CRB） is also derived. Simulation results verify the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

Matched field processing (MFP) for passive source localization is a comprehensive application of signal processing techniques in extremely complex environment. In essence, it is a parameter estimation processor by exploiting full wave modeling of acoustic waveguide propagation. Typical MFP performance demonstrates a threshold behavior, that is, below some signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the mean-square error (MSE) increases dramatically. In this paper, we develop approaches to study MFP performance of the data-based capon algorithm in the presence of spatially correlated noise. Especially, the effect of surface-generated noise (multi-rank) on MFP performance is interesting, different from that of point interference (one-rank). The capon algorithm has a well-know high resolution. However, it cannot achieve the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB), because of the biased statistic and the SNR decrease due to sample covariance matrix. In this thesis, we modify the CRB to redefine the asymptotic local bound of the capon algorithm here, and develop a so-called method of interval errors (MIE) to characterize the corresponding global performance bound. Performance analysis of capon MFP for source localization is implemented in a realistic shallow water environment. Simulation results suggest that, 1) in the presence of surface-generated noise or a point interference, both the threshold SNRs increase a lot, compared with the only white noise case;2) surface-generated noise is a stronger destroyer of MFP performance than both white noise and a point interference. Nearly the same MFP performance is caused by much higher signal-to-surface-generated noise ratio (SSNR) than signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). 3) MSE at high SNR deceases in a slower pace with surface-generated noise than the case with white noise or a point interference.

This letter presents a novel approach for the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) stereo imaging based on the capon spectrum estimation technique. In order to deal with nonuniform sampling space and lead to super resolution in the elevation direction, capon approach is used to focus the SAR data on a certain height. Results obtained on simulated data demonstrate the feasibility of the capon based algorithm. Compared with the classical Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the capon based algo-rithm shows better resolution quality.

This article proposed an algorithm which locate target range and azimuth simultaneously in vital sign detection, to address the defect traditional vital sign detection radar that locate target only from range information. This algorithm generate Range-Azimuth heatmap by capon algorithm to obtain target's range and azimuth information. Thus the targets in the same range bin but different angle bin can be distinguished. According to the experiment result of vital sign detection of two targets with MIMO radar, this algorithm can distinguish and extract targets' vital sign from the same range bin but different angle bin.

This paper presents a novel measurement method and briefly discusses the basic properties of direction of arrival (DoA) measurement in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar system by using orthogonality with time-division multiplexing (TDM), where only one transmitting antenna element is active in each time slot. This paper presents the mathematical model of the TDM-MIMO radar operating at 10 GHz, transmitting a string of pulses, the method of transmitting and receiving the signal, and the method of measuring the angle of arrival of the signal based on the use of the capon algorithm and its modifications. Finally, the correctness of the theory, algorithm and method of measuring the direction of arrival of the signal is verified by experimental simulation. The work discussed in this paper is of great significance to practically demonstrate the capabilities of the TDM MIMO radar sensor in practical implementations like reconnaissance and electronic warfare systems. The direction of arrival (DOA) estimation is a key issue in array signal processing, and there are many well-known methods, e.g., capon, MUSIC, Root-MUSIC and some other DOA estimation algorithms in the literature. Nevertheless, the effective DOA estimation for closely spaced multiple sources with large power differences is still a difficult problem due to the deteriorated resolution for the low power sources. In this paper, a novel DOA estimation method called capon-MUSIC algorithm is proposed, which has a much higher resolution for closely spaced multiple sources with obvious power differences. Finally, some numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

DOA Estimation for Underwater Target by Active Detection on Virtual Time Reversal Using a Uniform Linear Array

Aiming at addressing the problem caused by multipath effects in direction of arrival (DOA) estimation for underwater targets, a method based on the active detection on virtual time reversal (ADVTR) capon algorithm is proposed. Unlike the conventional passive target estimation method ignoring the multipath effects but only considering the direct wave, the proposed method is closer to the actual situation in that the multipath signal propagation model is fully taken into account;in addition, active detection (AD) and virtual time reversal (VTR) processes are added, which use active detection to estimate channels, and virtual time reversal to realize focusing in a computer after the source-receive array (SRA) receives the reflected signal of the target. The combination of the two methods can greatly improve the energy of SRA and the precision of target direction estimation. With the popular acoustic field simulation tool Bellhop, the model proposed in this paper is verified. Compared with the conventional capon method without time reversal, the simulation results show that the ADVTR capon estimation method is far better, in terms of resolution and suppressing the sidelobes. It is suitable for the target DOA estimation under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Further, we also show the ADVTR capon estimation method works well in a real tank experiment.

This article discusses the problem of active detection and estimation for the elevation angle of a target in a homogeneous shallow sea environment, where a method using active detection on virtual time reversal(ADVTR) is proposed to solve the estimator performance decline problem caused by multipath and clutter. Unlike the conventional passive target estimation method ignoring the multipath effect, the ADVTR method will take full account of the multipath which exploits active detection(AD) to estimate channel, and virtual time reversal(VTR) to realize focusing in a computer to increase the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) after the source-receive array(SRA) receives the reflected signal of the target. Furthermore, the capon algorithm is adopted to compare the performance of ADVTR estimator and conventional one. Numerical simulations demonstrate its superior performance than the conventional estimators.

In the case of low SNR and low snapshot, combined with the improved capon algorithm, this paper proposes a new algorithm based on weighted norm for DOA estimation. For narrow-band signal, we can construct the signal model of target signal by using compressed sensing. Because the subspace matrix and the noise space matrix are orthogonal to each other, a weighted matrix is constructed to decompose the signal into singular values, according to the improved capon algorithm to determine the weight, and then according to the optimization principle of norm minimization to solve the incident direction of the signal, to achieve the goal of DOA estimation.
